5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant evocation of the tyranny and trauma of school, 3 Oct. 2012

It's hard to believe this novel was written 20 years ago. It remains fresh and relevant today as it was then. Craig is a cool narrator: funny, dry and passionately angry at the way casual cruelty and hypocrisy of school life. Her vision is authentic - whether describing the trauma of first love, the primitive yearnings of the teenage male mind or the petty politics of teachers whose world view is limited to a few acres and a few hundred pupils. It is also gloriously humane and beautifully written. I would recommend this novel to everyone, but especially to any bullied teenager or any parent considering sending their child to a progressive boarding school.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soul washing!, 21 Feb. 2012
Sarah Salway has published an impressive début collection that is by turns sexy, witty, insightful, moving and above all whip smart. I love the way she takes the mundane and turns it into something glorious, so office stationary becomes a sensuous release and a mother's invention of an alternative father for her child has a witty, menacing edge. Readers will find something of their own lives reflected back at them through these poems, but with greater clarity and sparkle.
