A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing

1.0 out of 5 stars A. SentenCE. Is. A HALF-FORmed. ThIng, 19 Jan. 2015
McBride has "the courage to reinvent the sentence as she pleases..." An interesting experiment for her, I'm sure, but has it resulted in a satisfying experience for a reader? Unfortunately not. Devoid of humour, hope, a compelling plot or a protagonist you'll give a damn about, this is an overrated ugly bore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond Ted's Shadow: Plath as a poet in her own right., 1 April 2014
Utterly compelling, insightful and moving. Shines a light on Plath's young life, offering a frank and intimate portrait of this brilliant and complex woman.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pic n' Mix Champions!, 8 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Sweet, creamy and deliciously sickly, these cute little cones are those you might remember from Woolworth's Pic n' Mix. When they disappeared from my local Cineworld's sweet selection I was determined to track them down. I've since seen them for sale at a shopping centre sweet stall in 100g bags for around £1.60, which makes this supplier with its 500g bags better value. Your teeth and waistline won't thank you for buying these but the kid in you will. They also make great decorations for cupcakes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Haunting, atmospheric, 6 Jun. 2013

This review is from: Take Shelter [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Little-seen and therefore underappreciated, Take Shelter is a haunting movie with a mesmerising performance, as usual, by Michael Shannon. It's a movie which should've enjoyed a wider theatrical release and is worthy of anyone's time, especially those who prefer a more thoughtful, character-based experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life-affirming, 6 Jun. 2013

It's hard to imagine a better adaptation of such a profound and moving novel. Ang Lee is a master filmmaker. I've never seen anything of his which hasn't been thoughtful and meticulously crafted. This is no exception. Tremendous hard work has gone into every element of Life of Pi, from the script to the seamless special effects, which are among the best ever committed to film. Magnificent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strong prose, superb description, 28 Nov. 2012

This review is from: Lawless (Paperback)
The narrative moves back and forth in time but never in a way which confuses. The prose is strong, with some beautiful description and well-placed detail, and although violent it's never gratuitous.

Into Thin Air: A personal account of the Everest disaster - updated 2nd edition
by Jon Krakauer
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 10 May 2012

Gripping, beautifully written and devastating. Should be read by anyone thinking of joining a commercial Everest expedition. Like "Touching the Void" a major work of mountaineering literature you don't need to be a climber to appreciate.
