Reading Reasons:

After watching the first and second series of the popular TV show `A Game of Thrones', I was intrigued to read the novels so as to recap what I had seen on the show and to find out more about the back stories and developments of the characters.

This is just a review of the first book, upon which the first series of `A Game of Thrones' is based on.

Positives:

Set in a vast kingdom with a wide range of characters, alliances and mythical creatures that may well be extinct, or not, as some characters and folk tales believe they will return.

Takes the UK as a base for the world that is within most of the characters' lives, though some are outside of it, this makes it easier to relate with the landscape and distances.

Summer lasts for year and Winter can last for decades, the summer that is coming to an end within this book has lasted a very long time, and it is know that Winter always lasts longer than the summer prior to it, a nice development on seasons.

Each chapter is developed around a certain character of the authors choosing, if an important plot twist or development happens in the previous chapter, the character you are now reading about, if possible, will know about it. This is interesting as it means their actions and approaches change within the chapter because of the events elsewhere in the world, meaning that it may once again have another knock-on effect for the next character. There seems to be a slight order to who is written about when, but the story line primarily decides that.

Positive/Negative:

George R.R. Martin is an exceptional narrator and describes the surrounding world and different situation in great detail. With battles, landscape and characters reactions, this is a very useful tool, though he also uses it when talking about sexual acts or fantasies of the characters at hand. This is not so good, as you can imply enough without explaining how the human body works to the finer details. It has to be noted that the HBO series is more explicit than the book is, though that does not mean it is ok that the book is as detailed as it is.

Negatives:

It feels as though there is a lull after the beginning few chapters until major events begin happen within the world, this is to explain the characters that are going to crop up later and helps you get used to the world it is set in and understand the back story, which is vast and a little complicated, but also believable because of that.

There are a lot of characters and to start with it can be tricky to remember certain people's names, because I watched the TV show first I had a basic understanding of people, but at times I even struggled, so I can imagine this being hard for someone who has not seen the series. Though, it is worth getting to grips with and George R.R. Martin always tries to add a description of them or tie in a past event so your memory is jogged and you can place them within the story.

This book is 780 pages long and because of this, quite difficult to hold for long periods of time and that is an issue, because it will hook you in and you will want to be reading it for a while at a time. The other books in this series seem to be the same length. So far only `five' books have been released of the `seven' book series. There are seven books out at the moment, but that is because a couple of the books are split over two volumes to be more easily handled and readable.

Score:

4/5

Comments:

A great book with a fantastic story, brilliant characters who feel real, have flaws and who you will love and hate, you may even love the `bad guys' and hate the `good guys', also, don't get too attached, as it seems George R.R. Martin doesn't have an issue with killing anyone off... but you will just have to find out who and how for yourself!

I will defiantly be reading the other available books in this series when I have the chance!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pearls of Wisdom!, 3 Jan. 2013
Let me review this book with just a few of the life changing quotes I have taken away from it...

'In any sphere of life, in order to "become" we need a "because". If out because is strong enough, the becoming is inevitable; not a case of "if", but "when"!'

'To have authority one must submit to authority'

'If we cannot lead ourselves in a vibrant spirituality, we'll struggle to authentically lead others.'

'When we humble ourselves, we're not making ourselves less than we are, but in a particular context we've chosen to make ourselves smaller in order to serve a greater purpose.'

.. this book is life changing, filled with wisdom, knowledge and insights that will blow your mind! Just have a read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brutal honesty with the harshness of life in a zombie-apocalypse world! EPIC!, 3 Jan. 2013
So, the chances are you have seen the TV show 'The Walking Dead' or at lest heard about it, well this is a complete collection of issues #1-48 of the comic that started it ALL off!

Great art work, great story, fast paced, action packed and exciting!

A MUST have for any comic book lover or any person wanting to read a good comic book to see if they want to start collecting comics or following along with the story!

There is never a dull moment within the whole of 'The Walking Dead' comic series, characters coming and going, though anyone is expendable SO don't get too attached.

If you are a die hard fan of the TV show, a little disclaimer, things are changed in the TV show and happen differently than they happen within the comics themselves. This makes the comics more interesting (than if you already new every twist and turn) and you may just prefer the way things pan out in this comic more, you will just have to see!

Honesty - I saw the TV show first and loved it, after reading the comics I am now disappointed with the TV show, though I will keep watching it to see how they progress the show further and to see what else is changed or added in comparison to the comics.

IF you want to be entertained, you want realistic characters and you want brutal honesty with the harshness of life in a zombie-apocalypse world, search no further, this is the comic book series for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Short but sweet!, 3 Jan. 2013
Short and to the point, this was released due to the overwhelming response to the original published within a playboy magazine!

'This special issue of THE WALKING DEAD presents THE WALKING DEAD #19, featuring the first appearance of Michonne as well as the Michonne origin story that first appeared in Playboy Magazine'

Worth a couple of pounds to get a bit of back story and have a 'special issue' added to your collection of 'The Walking Dead'!

A must have for any die hard fan!

This book has pushed me deeper into my relationship with Jesus and has taught me lessons by looking at scripture, lessons that I had never before seen.
