Maurice's Strategikon: Handbook of Byzantine Military Strategy (The Middle Ages Series)
Maurice's Strategikon: Handbook of Byzantine Military Strategy (The Middle Ages Series)
by George T. Dennis
Edition: Paperback
Price: £15.00

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting look at the byzantine military, 31 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The Strategikon of Emperor Maurice is an interesting and unique look at the Roman world in the 6th century complete with tactics, enemy's and various other information on the mind set of the then still mighty empire before the explosion of Islam in the next hundred years changed the world forever. As I am not an expert on ancient Greek/Byzantine language writing I cannot comment on the translation anymore then to say I found it to be clearly written, presented and easy to understand.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the Dredd of my childhood, 31 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have to say that as a reader of the sci-fi comic 2000AD which Judge Dredd appeared in the early to mid 90's this is an excellent portrayal of the character Karl Urban really does justice to Dredd in this "day in the life of Dredd film" (not going to rehash the plot as plenty of information on the other reviews).

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent game, 30 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As someone who is old enough to remember the golden age of the 2D fighting games in the 90's I can say that this is on of the most enjoyable and well balanced, the sprites of the characters are all well drawn and have good sense of play from one another, the "story" of the game is weak and really an after thought and you really have to play online or with a friend to get the most out of the game as is true with all games of this type. In short highly recommended for both fighting game fans and the causal gamer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Game But only when played on Heroic, 25 July 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I can't really add anything more to the reviews here in terms of information except as the review title states the game on normal was to quick and simply forgetable, but campaining the second time on heroic I really enjoyed the game ten times more. Also the xbox live online gaming is great and for me one of the best online experences.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Truth", 8 July 2009
Akira Kurosawa's calling card to cinema worldwide is a brillant film in almost everyway, filmed with a handful of actors in no more then 3 locations it shows subjective nature of truth as told through a drama set in 11th century japan involving a rape and murder as told through 5 diffent accounts. This is a film that I really feel everyone should see at least one in there lives as even after almost 60 years it still is a eye-opener to what good cinema is and how it can affect the way we think.
Like all of Kurosawas films the direction, pace and sheer skill is second to none, I could could review and praise all his films however I feel this (ikiru & seven samurai close seconds) is my favorate of his films
Don't watch and you are missing out.

A-Z of Horror Film
A-Z of Horror Film
by Howard Maxford
Edition: Paperback

2.0 out of 5 stars Nothing more then a reference book, 8 July 2009
This review is from: A-Z of Horror Film (Paperback)
For a man who calms to love Horror films Mr Maxford has very little positive to say about most of the films reviewed in this book (most lucky to get a single star) however it is a good source of information on actors and others in the genre, (at least in the pre-internet age 1996-7 when I first brought and read the book). I wonder in the DVD film age of 2009 (just not the same as the old VHS) if he would like to update his work with a new edition.

The Dark Knight (Two Disc Special Edition) [DVD] [2008]
Dvd ~ Christian Bale

Price: £6.18

5.0 out of 5 stars The Dark Knight, 8 July 2009
I first watched this film in the cinema when it was released last summer
and was totally impressed with it and brought in on DVD in the the first few days of its release, having just watched it again a few minutes ago I felt the urge to give my impression of the film. well the direction, writing, camara work and acting were great all round (Heath Ledger steals every scene his in) and the pace was impressive even at it running time with no loss of momentum and relatively few action scenes, however the Scenes with two-face felt a little rushed and incomplete.

The Gangs Of New York: An Informal History of the Underworld
The Gangs Of New York: An Informal History of the Underworld
by Herbert Asbury
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.19

4.0 out of 5 stars Great "informal" History of crime in New York, 20 Sept. 2007
As the title of the book explains this volume written in the 1920s covers the various outlaws and villians of new york from pre-civil war years to what was then the close living memory of the eastman and five points gangs,
I agree with the reviewer who wrote how it is some-times a difficult read but on the whole i found the information interesting and worth the effort
men such as the real life "bill the butcher" owney madden and Monk Eastman are all vividly portrayed between these pages, and stick in the mind.
