On Intelligence: The History of Espionage and the Secret World
On Intelligence: The History of Espionage and the Secret World
Price: £12.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating book on the history of Intelligence by an intelligence officer, 17 May 2016
This is a follow on from On Intelligence but in now incorporating a wealth of new material and new subjects whilst giving a complete review of everything to do with intelligence over the years. The chapter on the triumph of US SIGINT at Midway is fascinating and the chapter on Cyberway is very up to date and, frankly, frightening.
Where he gets some of his material from is interesting as well. The Dutch NATO spy who worked for Mossad and the penetration of the IRA are new to me and fascinating
This book is nearly double the length of Military Intelligence Blunders and whilst it is a more in depth approach Hughes Wilson still manages to maintain his very accessible writing style. The other evening my twenty five year god son picked the book up at nine in the evening and was still reading at midnight. A testimony to the way that Hughes Wilson tells his story

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful insight into modern history, 26 April 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I loved this book. As good a historian as Margaret Macmillan (I can offer no higher praise)
A book of modern history which could have been a dry and academic read is instead a
compelling tale of the collapse of an empire/ Some of the insights and reportage are just
amazing. I have recommended this book to everyone including friends who are journos on
the broadsheets. This deserves a wide reading

5.0 out of 5 stars A really cracking read, 26 April 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am fascinated by Berlin and particularly the period leading up to the war
The book is based on a real life incident which I had had no awareness of,
and it is a truly staggering incident. I dont want to spoil the story so will say
no more other than that if you are interested in this period, this is a must read
book

5.0 out of 5 stars It was joy, pure joy, 20 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Because of a train strike in Belgium I had a three hour coach journey from Koln to Brussels. Reading this book made the time fly by.
It was joy, pure joy. Wonderful life and power in the narrative and some very strong characters. And at the heart of it the good old
Church of England, muddling through as ever. Fox captures the sense of fun and bewilderment that many in the C of E exhibit. For anyone brought up in the church as I was it had some very strong resonances. I shall certainly recommend to all my friends. Fox is a fantasticc writer and she should be taking up the slot left vacent by Susan Howatch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this book and learnt more about the armed forces ..., 16 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Loved this book and learnt more about the armed forces under the Nazis. (I had no idea the GFP were allowed such a free rein) The central character was extremely well drawn and probably was typical of many Germans in the forces faced with the horrific choices that many had to live with. A great great story line and I thought Luke handled all the pieces of the plot extremely well. I shall look out for more from him

5.0 out of 5 stars Kanon captured the whole scene very well and I would recommend this book to, 22 Jan. 2015

This review is from: Leaving Berlin (Kindle Edition)
Having been to Berlin every year since 1960 this novel brought back the sheer bloody stupidity and pointlessness of East Gernany. It really was
a soulless and pernicious place. Kanon captured the whole scene very well and I would recommend this book to everyone

5.0 out of 5 stars There is not much new under the sun in publishing ..., 2 Jan. 2015
There is not much new under the sun in publishing but as far as I know this is the first novel where the author recounts in the
PROLOGUE and EPILOGUE how he came to be involved in the politics of Chile. I read the book in two sittings, the novel part
basically taking place over the first twenty four hours of the coup. The epilogue is an account of interviews that the author had
with some of the characters who survived the coup. It truly is an extraordinary story and told in a masterful way by Kerr-Smiley.
I urge everyone to read it

Tents of the Righteous

4.0 out of 5 stars thought provoking, 26 Aug. 2014
I think the first reviewer is a bit harsh although I take on board his comments about pace at the beginning of the book. However, I think that the same could be said for Dominion quite frankly. I think that what the author does is to capture the overbearing nature of a dictator state. In the event of a cataclysmic disaster how quickly a government could take total control. The state overrides all rights of the individual. I think in the end there is hope in that Blair's message is that the flame of faith cannot be easily extinguished,
and that, in the end, it will always serve as a light pointing the way for those who seek the common good. An interesting and thought
provoking novel

5.0 out of 5 stars An Enthralling Read, 27 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As ever with Wilson, the plot is well worked and the characters are well fleshed out. I saved this book for my rail trip from
Bratislava to Berlin, nine hours, and the time flew by. The only pity is that one has to wait a while for the next book in the series.
The character of Catesby is developing into a formidable personality.
The areas that Wilson writes about he knows so well, which gives added credibility to the story. Certainly deserves comparison with John Le Carre
