5.0 out of 5 stars A great Read, 6 Sep 2013

Beautifully constructed story about a time and culture that is long past. Essentially this is Leonie story. Equally it is also story about outsiders and secret; about another way of viewing & makinig sense of the world as Leonie begins to find her own identtiy; to discover and understand why at times her life does not fit in with what she thinks to be true. The prose if tight and evocative.Loved every minute of it as the pieces of the puzzel fell into place

5.0 out of 5 stars Thw Kitchen House, 25 Jan 2012
This review is from: The Kitchen House (Paperback)
39. The Kitchen House - Kathleen Grissom - The story revolves around slavery in the States and indentured workers. The cruelty endured and the love of the slaves for some of their masters - so prepared to accept so little. As a 7 year old, Lavinia is orphaned on board ship sailing to the States from IReland with her family to find a better life. As an Irish person of no status she is taken as a slave and given to the slaves in the kitchen house to look after. Bella [the plantation owners illegitimate daughter by a previous slave], takes Lavinia under her wing. This is Lavinia's story as well as Bella's who has to watch her half siblings being treated like royalty while she endures harsh treatment when her father dies. Moving, extremely sad and hopeless at time, somehow Grissom does find a way to end with hope but what a life.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Tennis Partner, 25 Jan 2012
This review is from: The Tennis Partner (Paperback)
The Tennis Partner by Abrham Verghese - so different to Cutting for Stone which was a more polished piece of writing. This was turgid, at times felt indulgent and adolescent. Found myself missing paragraphs and pages in the end. You had to be obsessed with tennis for a start and somewhat autistic about medicine. This was the story of David, his addiction and his ultimate suicide. A tribute but nevertheless not a real explanation. More a salve to his own guilt in not being able to prevent David from committing suicide

5.0 out of 5 stars The Saffron Ktichen, 25 Jan 2012
This review is from: The Saffron Kitchen (Paperback)
1. The Saffron Kitchen by Yasmoin Crowther - the story of Maryam Mazar, her `English' daughter Sara, her husband, Englishman Edward, and Ali her father's servant. Ali's and Maryam's relationship lead to Maryam's exile and disowning of her by her father in the cruellest of ways. He is of the old school and because shame is the most important thing that could happen to a family, Maryam is sent into exile after being raped by the soldiers who proved she was a virgin. All because of the fear that she had slept with Ali - her return to her village and Ali after a trauma brings her story alive again as she has to explain to Sarah why she is not coming back to the UK. Sad, a story of isolation and loneliness and about immigration as a punishment rather than a choice; a story of wrecked lives but hopeful too at the end. A great honest read albeit disturbing at times
