5.0 out of 5 stars Hardly forgettable, 31 Oct 2003
Like many Chinese films, this one won me with its sublty. A distict oriental flavour of restrained passion. The cinematography is as poignant as in Zhang Yimo's films. Beautiful clothes add to the picturesqueness.

5.0 out of 5 stars The one that made Zhang, 31 Oct 2003
This review is from: Red Sorghum [VHS] (VHS Tape)
As I see it, this film is the epitome of Zhang's film language: simplicity in story-telling, simplicity in dialogue, non-extravegance in characters, use of local music, enhanced by landscape, a blend of realism and high-romanticism, all forwarding a sense of profound human emotions.
I must have been no older than eleven when I first saw this film, and the song the hero sings in the sorghum field still lingers on in my mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars A personal window to an entire country through time, 31 Oct 2003
This is a film about turbulances. The personal stories are minitures of the story of China going through changing times. Great performances from the main characters supported by well-crafted cinematography and carefully nurtured dialogues. For those who are ignorant of Chinese opera, this could be a starting point on a curioius journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Old-world romanticism in enchanting plainness, 31 Oct 2003
This review is from: The Road Home [DVD] [2001] (DVD)
The most enchanting aspect has to be the plainness of the characters and the plot. In sharp contrast to most popular films, 'the Road Home' has no outlanding figures as characters nor elaborate events as a plot. The simplicity of the mundane yet profound human emotions is captured (once again) by wordlessness and landscape-focus so typical of Zhang. The extravegance is based on the absence of it. Sentimental lovers must be cautious when approaching this work of art - it can be all too much.
