2.0 out of 5 stars Impractical as an e-reader, 26 Nov 2012
While it has the looks and the hype seems to uphold it, the battery life makes it totally impractical as an e-reader. When on holiday or travelling around with no access to recharging points - camping out in the wilds for example or on canoeing hols, the 'fire' quickly becomes excess baggage that you can do without. My trusty old kindle battery lasts up to 1 month with an average of 4hrs reading per day.
While it may have other good points, for me, it basically fails in the most important one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Gripping Good Read, 19 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am glad that I ignored all the 1 star ratings on this book as I thought it was very good. The main character you can identify with especially when you look around the world as it is now and where it seems to be heading. Very topical. Doesn't have all the gadgets of a 'future' world, but so what; it has a storyline that grabs you and keeps you running along to the end.
I get the feeling that because it is not 'Polity' material, poor old Neal gets a bad run.
Personally, I think this series is going to be just as good, if not better than his other works.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great phone but has big memory leakage issues, 12 Oct 2012
This is a great little smart phone, easy to use, robust and compact. Or would be.

Unfortuneately it suffers from a serious memory flaw which means that it runs out of available memory rather quickly. This usually results in factory resets and means you can't load as many Apps on the system as you want. I have only 2 Apps on mine (2k each and yet it uses 70mb).

There are no official patches for the phone to fix this problem, though you can hack it and 'root' the phone. However this will invalidate your warranty so you will be in trouble if it goes wrong. I certainly do not recommend this.

What this means is that the phone will literally slow down and stop working after a while. Yes, there are tools that can help clear down cache etc but these will only go so far and you need to keep using them.
Please note that this is a manufacturers issue and is generic with this type and model.

Shame really, but there it is.

1.0 out of 5 stars A kindle rip off, 9 Oct 2012
While I fully support authors being paid for their work, the price of the electronic format should not be more expensive than the paper or hard back versions. This is just a complete kindle rip off, so much for all the rubbish about bringing the cost of books down while giving more back to the writer.
Sad as the book itself is rather good - borrowed a copy of my friends' out of protest.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good collection of stories, 3 Oct 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a good collection of short stories. Most are well written and not over powering (which can sometimes happen in these short books).
A few thought provoking ideas with the usual twists at the end.
On the whole, well written and worth a look.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very patchy and half hearted, 3 Oct 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this on the strength of a few reviews but wish I hadn't. It is patchy, half hearted, unimaginative and seems as if the authors (supposively of some reknown) really couldn't be bothered. I wonder if any of them actually got out of bed to write these.
There are about 2 stories that neally make muster in this drab collection and I certainly won't be buying any more in the series nor will I look at the contributing 'authors' individual works again if this is all they can come up with.
It is such a shame that the art of short story writing (which I love with a passion) has obviously completely bypassed this collective.
Save your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and well researched, 5 Jun 2012
This is a well researched book and a fascinating read for anyone interested in the history and legend of the Stone of Destiny (Stone of Scone) as well as interesting insights into other similar and powerful artefacts.
Full of political intrigue both modern day and past; which if believed, may in part explain the shadow cast on the Nations current affairs today.
Adrian Gilbert at his best. Recommend a read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the others, 14 Dec 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was a bit disappointed with this volume. The stories were OK, but then the collector went on writing reviews of others work and proceeded to publish the 1st 2 chapters of books they had written.

I am sorry, but if I buy a book of short stories; that is what I expect not 30% of it taken over by reviews - could of had another short story instead. If you want a book with reviews then write one and market it accordingly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some good gems amongst this collection, 1 Dec 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As with all collections there are the odd duffs but I am happy to say that there are very few in this selection. Some I hadn't read before and the odd one or two was a pleasant trip down memory lane.
Mr Silverberg has a wonderful imagination and many of his short stories really make you stop and think.
Great stuff.
