Samsung bd-f8900 Great bit of kit but requires tweaking, 19 Aug 2013
We received this product to replace our sky hd box. and a dvd/player recorder
We have had this top set box now for about 3 weeks.
It was very easy to set up, once out the box it took approximately ten minutes to set up. (it must be noted that the instruction manual I received was not in English, HELPFUL NOT!!!!!!, fortunately I had been doing lots of research into the available products and had already accessed the English version online from the Samsung website.) I like to be forewarned as to how set things ups.
Setup was easy. I connected the supplied cables & then switched on the machine and followed the on screen instructions., wifi was very simple to setup, just like on your computer it automatically scanned for wifi and then you had to opt for your wifi and then enter the user password. As a technophobe even I could do this.
Once set up it took a little while to find our way around the different menus'. for example you have the home page where you can access 1)pay per view films.
2) Apps screen, here you can access BBC I player, ITV player, channel four & 5 on demand, Netflix, love films etc etc. You can also down load more apps from the Samsung website.
3) photos videos & music, this is where you can access the items that you have recorded, or you can stream music, photos & videos from you computer, smart phone or device.
HAVING A SAMSUNG PHONE AND SOFTWARE ON MY COMPUTER THE TOPSET BOX CAN ACCESS YOUR MUSIC/VIDEO & PHOTOGRAPHIC LIBRARY EASILY VIA WIFI (its amazing so simple to use).
recording programme is easy. select the program on the guide then choose to record or watch. simples. Though series link has to be done manually on schedule manager.
now for the minor niggles
The remote control is easy to use though the response time of the box may be a little on the slow side at times. (not as responsive as the sky box).
on the TV guide, the layout is not in a sensible order like other free view boxes. I would expect BBC1,2 followed by itv1, channels four and 5 followed by all the other channels but this is not the case. the channels are all mixed up in no particular order.
I have however managed to set up favourites which has got all my favourite channels but again not in any particular order.
The internet is easy to access though it is time consuming having to use the onscreen key board, Though I think it may be possible to use a Wifi key board but I have not got a clue how to set this up.
However another positive attribute is the e-manual. this is accessed by a button on the remote control. This is a online user guide that is viewed on the television, with try it now links so that you can access those areas you are reading about.
would I recommend this machine, most definitely though it is an little expensive compared to other machines. once you can navigate the menus it turns out to be a great product.
