1.0 out of 5 stars Utter rubbish, 3 July 2013

Badly written, horrible and unbelievable characters. I rarely give up on a book, but I abandoned this one before half way even.

If you liked Wolf Hall, then this is for you. "He" continues his machinations at Court, and we move through the Boleyn era. The drawback of historical novels is you know the end before you start, but this is a great read taking a viewpoint from outside the predictable Henry VIII inner world, yet close enough to get all the details. Bring on Book 3!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Failed to live up to its potential, 3 July 2013

I like the idea that we have been worrying about climate change for years, but it is actually a completely unpredictable and not understood disaster that overtakes humanity. The story is set from a child's perspective, where the impact on society and her family is described. This is good, but it would have been nice to get a feel for the bigger picture somehow ie what was happening outside of her town or country, why did the rotation slow etc. It needed a bit more science to be good Sci-Fi, and ends up feeling a bit Teen Fiction (think Hunger Games, but not as fun). You feel there is so much more you could have heard about beyond the small world of a suburban pre-teen under such circumstances.

Then there is a really irritating jump of years to adulthood, which felt completely pointless.

2.0 out of 5 stars nothing amazing, 3 July 2013

This book had promise, but I failed to develop any empathy with the lead character. The most interesting person was her love interest, about whom she (and therefore you) knew almost nothing. Despite being set in an era of oppression and violence, nothing much actually happens to this girl. Yawn.

This period of history is full of awful facts well-recorded...nothing particularly novel here. The story shows how hard it is to hate your enemy once you get to see them as a person. The heroine is a bit difficult to warm to, as is a bit wooden and repetitive. I find myself wanting to hear more about the resistance members and their relationships and challenges, including her husband, rather than her agonising yet again about having to fraternize with the enemy. It is a fairly easy read though, and was enjoyable enough, but wasn't very challenging, and in fact life didn't actually feel that hard or unpleasant for our heroine in Occupied Poland. Read it if you fancy a WWII historical romance, and don't want anything too challenging.

5.0 out of 5 stars highly recommended, 17 Oct 2012

This book takes a bit of concentration, as the timeline skips around, crossing several generations, each with interwoven plots and facts. It is totally worth the effort...very funny. The family trip to Scotland had me howling with laughter with recognition of my own awful childhood car trips. having been misled by the title into expecting something worthy about museums, I was very happily surprised from page 1, and very grateful to someone in our book club for suggesting it.

Couldn't put this one down. The characters are believable, and the way Catherine gets drawn in by Lee is sadly too believable. Grim story-line, but I was sad it ended.

The images/packaging are a bit misleading. Even the name suggests a HELMET, but it is actually a mask held on by elasticated webbing. My son was a bit disappointed when he opened it as he expected it to go all the way round. Apart from that he is happy enough with it and likes the voices. The disappointment would be avoided if they called this a MASK, which is what it really is.
