4.0 out of 5 stars UK BLU-RAY CERTIFICATE - BEWARE!, 12 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a review of the UK Blu-ray National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)

If you have only ever watched this film on VHS, TV or DVD you will have been watching the cut UK version which replaces one F-word with 'dancing'. For the first time ever we can now watch the uncut version of this film which I am all in favour of BUT unfortunately the packaging on the cover and disc of the Blu-ray states PG cert when it should be a 12.

If you purchase the box set with all 4 films you will notice the white cover on the disc and it has been changed to 12.
It is easier for a film company to use one master when authoring to Blu-ray and then up the certificate depending on country.

A recent example of this is 'Memphis Belle' which has always been a PG in the UK but was changed to 12 for the Blu-ray to allow the F-word that was always present on the US disc. The DVD remains unchanged.

If you wish to buy the Blu-ray to replace a DVD for the bump in PQ which it is, but not as much as you might expect then please do. BUT please be aware that it has a big, big F-word near the end of the film when Clark is flipping out which is not said quietly and which may surprise those that are used to the DVD.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great 'Film', Disappointing Blu-ray., 28 Mar. 2014
This is a classic from 1978, there is no doubt about it.

BUT we are missing the point of what a BLU-RAY disc is all about!!

I would have liked:

1) The option to watch the TV full length version

2) The option to watch both versions in 4:3 or Widescreen

3) On the Region 1 box set is a commentary by Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict and Herbert Jefferson Jr.

4) The Original cinema release poster art on the cover

5) Isolated soundtrack

6) Behind the scenes features from 1978

I thought with the invention of Blu-ray we would get a better picture, sound and extra's as the space available on the disc is able to hold so much more information than a standard DVD.
I appreciate the better PQ but really all we have here is an upscaled re-release of the previous theatrical DVD!

Rather than knock this out and put it in a 3 for £17 deal - I would gladly pay £17 just for the release I want!

Missed Opportunity - Unfortunately.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible Mess Of A Movie, 28 Mar. 2014
This review is from: The Dilemma [DVD] (DVD)
I Cannot believe Ron Howard directed this!!!

Just one of a long line of terrible Vince Vaughn 'comedies'?

This is the same director that made Nightshift, Splash, Cocoon, Willow, Backdraft, Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind and more recently got back on track with 'Rush'. Yes he's made some underperforming movies over the last 20+ years but this dog should have been dropped at the very earliest thought.

Steer well clear is my honest opinion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Steelbook - Big Mistake Though!!, 5 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
1 This is a lovely Steelbook (Blu-ray)
2 The film is a classic and nicely presented in HD

3 THE BIG MISTAKE - The printed credits on the reverse of the steelbook are for Cocoon II: The Return (just look at the picture on Amazon)

This will probably be withdrawn and Amazon as of 05.03.14 have stopped selling it themselves (Under Review)

Shame as it is a nice looking steelbook. I would have preferred the original lettering from the cinema poster with the 0's connected.

Addendum: Back on sale on 06.03.14. I assume as most customers will not mind or even notice the incorrect titles on the back (they are very small) then why not sell the item. I assume they have checked with 20th Century Fox UK to continue selling. Other sites are still selling.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great FILM! BAD Cover!, 30 Sept. 2013
And the award for one of the worst covers to ever grace a Blu-ray film goes to....The Firm. What were they thinking!!! What was so wrong about the original cover for the VHS..the DVD..and now for the pinnacle of clarity and quality for the home we get this abomination. At least the spine is OK I suppose. I despair.
Picture quality is much improved as you would expect from a Blu-ray but please in future Paramount, please use the original cinema posters when you release on Blu-ray in future. Thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gem of a James Garner movie, 20 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is one of my favourite movies from the 1980's. Until recently it has previously only been available on VHS in the UK and VHS & DVD in the USA but only ever in the 4:3 aspect ratio. This release from Germany is finally available in widescreen (1.85:1)
Once loaded the static menu gives the usual options (in German) of Play, Scenes, Audio etc
I played the movie and changed the audio to English while the Universal logo was seen.
The Picture Quality is excellent - obviously not reference quality but vastly better than DVD. The audio is 2.0 but is clear and does the job.
The sleeve is reversible (both are German text but with the option on one side of not having the big green 12 on the front cover. The box is a slim USA style. It is region B but I don't know if it is locked.
I am very pleased to own this movie on Blu ray and in widescreen and would recommend this release.

5.0 out of 5 stars USA Blu-ray Region Info, 1 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This Blu-ray is REGION FREE.

I searched the internet for ages to find a review that gave me the region info and in the end thought - well it's only around the £3-£4 mark so I thought I would give it a go anyway. When it arrived I popped it in my Sony S480 multi-region DVD but NOT Blu-ray player and it worked happily.
As expected the Picture quality and sound is much improved over the DVD and I am very happy to have this in my collection.

Other Mill Creek Blu-rays that are region free are:
Indian Summer, Straight Talk, White Squall, The Marrying Man, V.I. Warshawski, Consenting Adults.

Now all I need is Mill Creek to release the other Melanie Griffith film 'Paradise' on Blu and I will be even happier.

4.0 out of 5 stars A DVD Review, 30 Sept. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Firestarter [DVD] (DVD)
Review for the Prism edition.
The back of the box states 16:9 which could either lead you to believe that it is either 1.85:1 widescreen or anamorphic. It is in fact the correct aspect ratio of 2.35:1 non-anamorphic, this means you need to expand the picture to fill the screen although it will still have black bars top and bottom.
The picture is slightly grainy and has obviously not been cleaned up but this is a treatment that many older films receive on DVD. I am just happy to have the film in the correct aspect ratio. TV companies either show it in 16:9 which mean the sides are cropped.
Audio is in stereo.
One day Firestarter might receive the collector's edition treatment it deserves and hopefully will include a commentary like the excellent one on The Dead Zone (Sanctuary Special Edition)R2 only.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paul Newman Classic, 28 Oct. 2010
A Classic. I remember watching the VTC (Video Tape Company) VHS original with it's large squishy gold box back in the early 80's....ahh memories.

I want to focus my review on the DVD rather than the film and point out what is missing from Amazon's listing.

The aspect ratio on the DVD is Widescreen and not 4:3. It is 1.85:1 letterbox so when you expand the picture it will fill your widescreen TV. You have to do this yourself rather than the TV doing this automatically which is anamorphic.

Picture quality is still surprisingly good considering it's age and letterboxing and it is great to see this in widescreen rather than 4:3 as I missed it in the cinema. It is still miles better than the VHS.

Great film and a DVD worth having if you have a multi-region DVD player as it is rarely shown on TV. Shame it is not on Region 2 as I think it would do rather well.
