4.0 out of 5 stars if you have seen the film, the book is even better!, 31 Dec. 2013

I had actually seen the movie of this before I read the book and there is a lot more back story in the book, more about the family dynamics and the extent of the breakdown suffered by the main character and his mental illness. It is eventually a joyful book - in some areas hilarious - and shows the vital part played by family/friends support networks for anyone who is recuperating from any knockback in their lives, and even more so when dealing with mental ill health, which we will all have at some time in our lives....

I love Julian Barnes anyway but this book, particularly the second part in which he talks about grief and loss, in the wake of the death of his wife, is surprisingly uplifting. The joy of having made a journey with your soul mate lifts off the page and shines through the sadness. This book is indescribable really but READ IT, it will make your life better.

4.0 out of 5 stars heart-rending, 31 Dec. 2013

This book will leave you gasping and probably exhausted too. It really gets to the emotions and the story is intense whilst at the same time there are moving descriptions of the landscapes which lift you. The added effect of a mystery told in reverse makes it a true page-turner. Try not to read any info about the story before you read the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars so disappointing...., 23 Nov. 2013
Several people suggested I would enjoy this and even though early on it had not engaged me I ploughed on in hope! There are no decent characters ~ good or bad. It felt like looking forward to a meal at a recommended restaurant and ending up with a tough and tasteless plate of food. I never leave bad reviews normally but this needs to be an exception. I am an avid reader of a wide range of authors and this book left me sad that I had not enjoyed it.

Draws you in to the stories and diverse personalities of the main characters. There is a mystery running as an undercurrent all the way through but the key to the disturbance in the lives of the privileged characters here is that ignoring mental illness does not make it go away.

3.0 out of 5 stars good for a rainy day read, 8 Dec. 2012

A warm story which is well -written and has some pathos as well as warmth. I found it a little disappointing though after all the rave reviews.
