Martin Amor and Alex Pellew have written one of the best ‘how to’ guidebooks available on the market at the moment. THE IDEA IN YOU is easy flowing, fun to read and packed with real examples from other successful entrepreneurs (Run Dem Crew, Mallow & Marsh, Pizza Pilgrims, Decoded and iEat – just to list a few).

The book consists of three main sections: staring with all of the things that you need to consider before laying the groundwork (they guide you how to find and land your idea). Then they move to the kick-off stages (starting, dreaming, staying free and learning), before moving to planning the future for your idea (the WHYs, self-honesty, persistence and the economy of favours). The theory is nicely mixed with real life examples, which brings it all to life in a digestible chunks.

The last section of the book is a collection of resources for the readers (The Creator’s Black Book), which gives them a great head start when finally ready for turning their idea into a reality.

The book is complemented by a beautifully put together website (http://theideainyou.com/) and Creator Community packed with additional useful information (http://creator.community/).

This is a book that will be around for a while and inspire a lot of creative people to get on with their ideas and just do it!

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Diva is back!!, 2 Jun. 2014
Mariah Carey is back with ME. I AM MARIAH… THE ELUSIVE CHANTEUSE, her 14th studio album, without counting a soundtrack album (Glitter), a live album (MTV Unplugged) and 6 compilation albums. Not a bad score for an artist with a 24 years of experience under her belt.

ME. I AM MARIAH… THE ELUSIVE CHANTEUSE has been executively produced by Mariah, Bryan Michael Cox and Jermaine Dupri. Mariah’s new album is an elegantly versatile collection of an R&B, pop, funk, soul and a bit of dance songs. She’s started the recordings back in 2011, which is not that unusual for diva, as she famous for working till the wee hours until the record sound precisely to her satisfaction. And she is not disappointing on her new record either.

Her voice range is as strong as it was 24 years ago when she released her first single, Vision of Love, and she sounds pretty comfortable swinging on the vocal scale. She is also one of the very few artists around who still pay so much attention to lead and background vocal arrangements. Quite something in the days of ‘ooohhhs’ and ‘aaahhhs’ used instead of words, which we have so many in our English dictionaries.

Mariah’s songs drip with emotions which makes her repertoire a rather memorable and favourable collection. On this record, she is just that – a red blooded woman singing her heart out. Let’s take a close look at the guest appearing on the album. We have Nas on Dedicated, Miguel on very well received Beautiful, Wale on You Don’t Know What to Do and Fabolous on Money. Hold on, we also have a very special appearances from Ms Monroe and Mr Moroccan aka Dembabies on Supernatural (a rather lovely recording debut for Mariah and Nick Cannon’s twins). There is also a fantastic cover of George Michael’s One More Try. One would hope for a live duet if diva decides to visit the good old Blighty for a promotional work.

The deluxe edition revisits Mariah’s Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel album from 2009. This time around she teamed up with Mary J Blige on It’s a Wrap and R Kelly on Betcha Gon’ Know. Both successfully produced collaborations. However, it’s a shame that her collaboration with Rick Ross and Meek Mill on Triumphant (Get ‘Em) or wonderfully crafted theme song for Walt Disney’s smash Oz the Great and Powerful Almost Home were not included. Apart from both duets mentioned above, the deluxe version includes Mariah’s previous single The Art of Letting Go, a spoken word on ME. I AM MARIAH… THE ELUSIVE CHANTEUSE and America the Beautiful.

Overall, Mariah’s latest album sounds much more cohesive the previous Memoires… and is rather pleasing for the ear. Congratulations and good luck with the promotional work, hopefully including a world tour.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true masterpiece!!, 8 Feb. 2014
TRANSORIENTAL ORCHESTRA is Kayah’s 12th album since her self-titled debut in 1988. She is one of the most acclaimed and successful Polish artists, born in Warsaw, Poland. During her career she has collaborated with many local and international artists, including Goran Bregovic and Cesaria Evora.

In 2012 she was invited to sing at the 10th edition of the Jewish Culture Festival: Singer’s Warsaw. As an outcome of this positive experience, she has decided to invite Atanas Valkov to revisit with her the genre of the World Music scene again. The outcome of their project are these wonderfully performed and arranged eleven songs. TRANSORIENTAL ORCHESTRA is a colourful synergy of Slavic, Balkan and Persian sounds. This is a fusion of a traditional, ethno-jazz, electronic and movie music, inspired by the Jewish culture from various regions of Europe and the Middle East. Kayah sings in Polish, Ladino, Hebrew, Arabic and Yiddish.

TRANSORIENTAL ORCHESTRA is rich, colourful, exciting, moving, sad, uplifting and unique at the same time. But most importantly this album is REAL. Although it is not sung in English, do give it a go and you will hold it in your heart for the rest of your life. A true masterpiece.

KONDJA MIA, KONDJA MIA

The album opens with a tune from Iberian Peninsula and sung in Judeo-Spanish, which is a Spanish dialect based on old Spanish language spoken by Sephardic Jews widely in the 15th century. The Jews were banished from Iberian Peninsula at the end of 1490s and subsequently relocated to England, Holland, Italy and Turkey. They kept their language and nowadays around 200,000 people still practice Judeo-Spanish, mainly in Israel.

Rose of Mine, Rose of Mine (Kondja Mia, Konda Mia).
The flower in my hair.
Total eclipse of the Moon.
The sea brings me no joy anymore.
Hey girl, speak to me in the language of love.
I’m burning!

Great arrangement by Atanas Valkov and Kayah, starting with a Tibetan Buddhist Monks’ mantra and hardly any other instrument but Kayah’s captivating voice. The dramatic beginning is followed by a drum-trans-like-explosion, which continues until the end of the song, whereby the last word is left to the Monks again. This song takes the listener right to the world of Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, tremendously moving.

AMAN MINUSH

Love is by far the most commonly chosen topic in the Sephardi Jews’ musical history. Aman Minush talks about the power of devotion and fidelity, which simply can never be broken, even by the seducing powers of a mermaid. According to many legends, these beautiful sea creatures often toyed with the sailors, leaving them eventually in an eternal heartache. But when the heart of a lover belongs to another, not even the hardest work of seduction could break the spell of their love. Nothing can break the powerful chains of true love.

Close your eyes and watch how the above scene unfolds in front of your eyes. Kayah’s voice is seductive, sultry and quite irresistible. Another ‘rich’ arrangement, with a fantastic ending – chanting accompanied by a very modern drum and bass sequence.

DE EDAD DE KINZE ANYOS

Since I was fifteen (DE EDAD DE KINZE ANYOS) tells the story of a young girl who is head over heals in love with a thieving gambler. Crazily in love, she is driven to offer him even a bigger fortune, secretly hoping for his everlasting devotion in return.
This is a very popular Sephardi Jews’ composition, which has been re-interpreted by many others, including some of the Arabic Ensembles. A traditional tune passed between generations, adapting accordingly to suit their times and traditions.

The song starts with Kayah’s voice and acoustic guitar, then picks it up and turns into a wonderfully jolly, dynamic and inviting to dance song. A superbly timeless delivery and arrangements makes it again very appropriate for our times.

LAMMA BADA

The origin of LAMMA BADA goes back to the 12th century and Spanish Andalusia, sung in Arabic but with hearable Moroccan influences. It’s an ode to a beautiful woman, and her perfectly mastered movements. Originally and most likely performed by a male singer on a mission to win the heart of this female beauty.
Quite a complicated structure of this tune due to an incorporating of sama’l thaqil, a 10/8 rhythmic baseline characteristic of Sephardi Jews living in Spanish Andalusia.

HAVA NAGILA

By far the most popular and recognise song of a Jewish tradition and culture. The lyrics was written on the basis of Psalm 118:24 of the Tanakh, the canon of the Hebrew Bible. Over the centuries, it has been sung as a Nigun, a form of Jewish religious tune sung by groups. Unfortunately, the original lyrics have not been preserved in full anymore. In 1918 Abraham Zevi Idelsohn has re-written the words, and after his death, Moshe Natanson has confirmed modifying them too.
The message of this tune has survived and talks about the joyous powers of unity and togetherness. Another great delivery which invites the listener to get up, grab a nearby partner and dance together in the middle of the room. A fantastic use of a whistle and children’s rumble at the end of the song.

EL ELIYAHU

Most likely written by 12th century poet, mathematician and philosopher Ibrahim Aben Ezra. EL ELIYAH is being sung during Havdalah, which is a Jewish religious ceremony marking the symbolic end of Sabbat and Jewish holidays. The ritual involves lighting a special havdalah candle with several wicks, blessing a cup of wine and smelling sweet spices. The purpose of a Sabbat is to convince the Messiah to descend on Earth and therefore guarantee an eternal Sabbat. EL ELIYAH is also a religious song connecting the singer with the Almighty. Fantastic drums by Tomek Torres as well as background arrangements by Paco Sarr.

TRANSORIENTAL

The lyrics have been written by Atanas Valkov, a music producer of TRANSORIENTAL ORCHESTRA. The tune sounds extremely mystically with Kayah reciting Ana BeKoach, an ancient prayer in Aramaic, the common language of Judea in the 1st century, most likely used by Jesus Christ. It is known as the 42-letter Name of God, a unique formula built of 42 letters in seven sentences of six words each. Each of the seven sentences corresponds to the seven days of the week, seven specific angels, and to a particular heavenly body. The letters making Ana BeKoach are encoded within the first 42 letters of the Book of Genesis.
Although almost 2,000 years old, this version sounds extremely current and relevant. Captivating vocals by Jahiar Azim Irani.

AJDE JANO

This song is a yearning for the return of the good old days of simple and very plain way of going about the life. It urges to abandon the rat race and stop gathering earthy possession. It emphasises the beauty and happiness of simple life existence.
AJDE JANO comes from the 14th century Servia or Republic of Macedonia and Jewish population scattered within these territories.
The lead vocals have been sung by Iwona Zasuwa and Jahiar Azim Irani. Marcin Wieczorek performed on all accordion parts.

REBEKA

Kayah finally reaches Eastern Europe and the world of Ashkenazi Jews, incorporating musical motives of Balkans. She sings this version in Polish, her native language. REBEKA is a Polish tango composed by Kazimierz Bialostocki and Andrzej Wlast. The song talks about a young girl, a victim of the love at the first sight syndrome, who dreams about ‘the one’ but is too shy to tell him how she feels.

JIDISZE MAME

Ashkenazi Jews resided within the Eastern, Middle and some parts of a Western Europe. During the Renaissance period, those living within the German Empire spoke mainly in German, but work hard on adding some of the Hebrew words to their day-to-day language. Throughout their eternal travels around the world, they picked up some of the local words, and therefore had grown also their own language. All of this had led to creation of Yiddish, a High German language of Ashkenazi Jews.

JIDISZE MAME was written by Lew Pollack and Willie Howard and after 1928 has become an international smash-hit, performed by Neil Sedaka, Tom Jonas or Nino Bravo. This song is an ode to a mother, who holds a very special status in the Jewish tradition. The piano, Kayah’s voice and an old-vinyl-like-sound at the beginning of the song, take the listener right into the middle of the war, and some rather smoky little German nightclub. The second part is jazzier, contemporary but equally as entrancing.

WARSZAWO MA

Warsaw, My…. Written by Andrzej Wlast and Kazimierz Jerzy Oberfeld, who lost his life in January 1945 on his way to Auschwitz. It is a song about a city battered by the war, ruined by violence and murder. War-saw, Polish capital of human tragedy and sadness, with ‘war’ in its name. Kayah’s delivery is extremely moving and touching. She dramatically channels all of those who were brutally robbed of their goods and eventually killed. It’s a perfect choice for closing her transoriental Jewish journey.

Will I ever see you again…
Warsaw, My…

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 17 Dec. 2013
This review is from: Christmas, With Love (Audio CD)
Leona Lewis is the winner of the 2006 third season of The X-Factor UK, and one of the most successful artist this show has ever produced, with three albums under her belt and over 20 million records sold worldwide.

This winter, Lewis and Simon Cowell (artist's Syco boss) are bringing her first Christmas album titled CHRISTMAS, WITH LOVE.

The sound of CHRISTMAS, WITH LOVE is kept with Motown's vibe in mind, but with a healthy dose of Lewis' uniqueness. Apart from Leona's versions of such classics as Winter Wonderland, White Christmas, Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) or Silent Night, she is adding three brand new songs to her repertoire. These are One More Sleep (also a first single promoting the album), Mr Right and Your Hallelujah.

All tracks were produced by Richard `Biff' Stannard, who has worked on One Direction, Kylie Minogue, Spice Girls and Will Young's biggest hits, just to list a few. He was supported by Ash Howes, who along Leona took charge of producing the vocals.

01. One More Sleep (Leone Lewis, Richard Stannard, Iain James, Jez Ashurst, Bradford Ellis)

Superb. I love Leona's interpretation of the lyrics, arrangement and background vocals. The song it's beautifully put together with a huge chance to become an all-time classic, along Mariah's All I Want for Christmas and Wham's Last Christmas. Fabulous.

02. Winter Wonderland (Felix Bernard, Dick Smith)

Overproduced. Leona's vocals are perfect, of course, but it just does not work for me. She sounds lost and overwhelmed. This is the only track on the album that I am not crazy about.

03. White Christmas (Irving Berlin)

Fantastic arrangement and vocal production. Leona really owns it here. A great song to get up and dance off your Christmas dinner. A one for the lovers.

04. Your Hallelujah (Leona Lewis, Jon Levine, Autumn Rowe, Lauren Christy)

This is the second of the tree new songs. This one is quite nostalgic and melancholic. Great choir and very simple arrangement, a lovely ballad.

05. Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) (Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich, Phil Spector)

A full on festive arrangement which complements Leona's voice perfectly. Superb use of a trumpet, just the right amount giving it a bit of cheekiness.

06. Mr Right (Leona Lewis, Richard Stannard, Camille Purcell, Jez Ashurst, Ash Howes)

Another new composition. A sweet up-tempo festive tune with a very Christmassy jingle bell in the background. A perfect sing-along song which could easily be sung be the legendary Mariah Carey.

07. O Holy Night (Adolphe Adam)

Simple arrangements and flawless delivery. The ending is definitely more interesting with a fantastic background singing.

08. I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday (Roy Wood)

Slow to start with, but then it picks up, making you immediately to get up, rock from side to side and sing along to it. A happy feeling tune.

09. Ave Maria (Franz Schubert, Walter Scott)

Leona has had an operatic training and she definitely shows her mezzo-soprano vocal capabilities in Schubert's Ave Maria. Her interpretation is surprising and fantastically mesmerizing. It sort of stops you half way through it to check if that's really her. Well, it is. Leona's voice with the company of a piano, striped down from any decorations - simply beautiful and very moving.

10. Silent Night (Franz Xaver Gruber, Joseph Mohr)

A fantastic a'capella intro to this international classic, close your eyes and find yourself at a midnight mass in some beautiful and sleepy little church.

Produced by Richard Stannard, Ash Howes and Leona Lewis.
Christmas, with Love has been released on 29th November 2013 on Syco / RCA

5.0 out of 5 stars A great debut novel!, 17 Nov. 2013
This review is from: Ade: A Love Story (Hardcover)
Adé: A Love Story, is a debut novel by the critically acclaimed American author Rebecca Walker. It's a story of two young American girls departing on a travel adventure around Egypt and Africa. Whilst in Kenya, one of them falls in love in a young Swahili man and abandons her friend on the onwards journey. She takes a bold move of getting lost in the newly discovered emotions. At first, all seems idyllic, with Farida learning the new language, getting familiar with the locals' way of living and eventually planning her wedding to Adé. And all of it in the context of a sensual closeness to her very locally popular fiancé. But then something strange happens. Farida gets very ill and almost loses her life. In the end, she is being flown over back to America, where her cerebral malaria and a rare meningitis could be properly treated. She leaves her lover behind.... And never returns.

The novel is quite short, just over 110 pages and reads on a breath. Walker's language is easy to follow and her narratives very believable. Her love story is convincing and ground breaking in how she pulls together two very different people in a rather unusual circumstances. Race, religion, habits and believes are all tumbled together and serve in an uncommon but very natural way. It is interesting how Walker has ended the novel, keeping your mind wondering in thinking of how Farida and Adé's lives would unfold, had she never fallen ill. She allows the reader to write the next chapters in their own minds.

The novel has been heavily backed up by Madonna who have recommended it to her fans through her social media channels.

Congratulations Rebecca. We're waiting for more.

Rebecca Walker is an award-winning writer and lecturer, named by Times magazine as one of the most influential leaders of her generation. She is the author of the memoirs BLACK, WHITE & JEWISH and BABY LOVE, and the editor of the anthologies TO BE REAL, WHAT MAKES A MAN, ONE BIG HAPPY FAMILY and BLACK COOL. Her writing has appeared in Bookforum, Newsweek, Glamour, Marie Claire, the Washington Post, Vibe and Interview, among other publications and literary collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Celine Dion is BACK!, 11 Nov. 2013
This review is from: Loved Me Back to Life (Audio CD)
Céline Dion is back with her eleventh English-language studio album LOVED ME BACK TO LIFE. After over 32 years in the music business and 47 albums under her belt, she has managed to reveal a quite different facet to her already wonderfully accomplished self.

Dion is currently residing with her Céline Show featuring 31 musicians, a full orchestra and band at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. That was also where she laid most of her vocals down for the album. She did so at the legendary Studios at the Palms in Las Vegas. She also travelled to Florida to work at the Echo Beach Studio. All of which under the watchful ear of John Mcl. Doelp, album's executive producer. Dion recorded fifteen songs for the album, some of them are new and written especially for her, and the other tracks are her versions of a well-known songs. She wanted to sound different but without drastic disconnection from her legacy. She was ready to take the risk but let's face it, Dion is Dion and her distinct and easily recognisable voice will always be her trademark. No matter how she decides to use it. Her husband, career mentor and a manager René Angélil, pulled all possible strings to make his wife's dream become a reality. He got her to record a duet with R&B star Ne-Yo and Soul legend Stevie Wonder. Diane Warren, Sia Furler and Eg White have all written for her and the legendary Kenny `Babyface' Edwards produced couple of songs too.

Céline Dion is very open about her happy existence and having the life she has always dreamed of: wonderful career and loving family. Dion is a master of music interpretation, she does not compose music, nor write lyrics, yet she sings them as they were `her' stories. She does make you feel like she has lived through them all. On this records she wanted to dig deeper into her soul, reaching there to find the Céline rebel and the Céline rock star, and to subsequently give them a new life. Stripped down from voice effects and complicated arrangements, she sounds refreshingly real, dry and powerful. And more importantly, with this album she has a great opportunity to reach wider audience and get connected with young listeners. She has never sounded more current. LOVED ME BACK TO LIFE is a fantastic cd which will be found by many under their Christmas trees this winter. Wonderful, they will cherish it for decades.

Loved Me Back To Life - is an opening track and first single from the album, it is a powerful ballad co-written for Dion by Sia Furler, who co-wrote (and sung on) David Guetta's Titanium and Rhianna's Diamonds. Lyrically, the track is not far from what Dion has recorded in the past. What's different and new is the way she delivers it. Her voice sounds darker and sexier. All of this with a wonderful addictive dubstep-y beat drop with an amazing vocal hook. Fresh and current.

Somebody Loves Somebody - here Dion moves to the dancefloor with this fantastically produced track by the Swedish Play Production. She is strong, sexy and yet again, very current.

Incredible - is a duet with Ne-Yo who also co-wrote it. This is album's second single and also a strong candidate for the upcoming Winter Olympics' theme. Despite being such different artists, Dion shows how versatile she can be and just how much there is for her to do with her voice. They sound beautifully entwined when they sing: whole world is watching us now, it's a little intimidating but since there's no way to calm down, let's give them something amazing.

Water & Flame - is Dion's first cover on the album of Daniel Merriweather's 2009 song with additional vocals from Adele. Dion delivers it in a lower registry with a deeper, haskier and sexier tone. A very powerful interpretation.

Breakaway - another Play Production is taking Dion's voice into a new territory to travel around the scale accompanied by dramatically growing musical tension. Classical yet very modern Dion.

Save Your Soul - another up-tempo track in which Dion sounds very fresh, poppy and super current. Terrific beat and arrangement. Danny Mercer, the guy behind will.i.am and Nicole Scherzinger's hits introduces Dion to the younger generation.

Didn't Know Love - another love story but with a new edge to Dion's repertoire; her voice sounds bare and rough when she delivers the words: it's a blessing, it's a curse, you know you've found it when it hurts. It can drive you off a cliff, but it's worth it.

Thank you - written by Shaffer Smith aka Ne-Yo, who also sings background on the record. It's a beautifully and delicately delivered THANK YOU message to the one who loved you, because he/she didn't have to...

Overjoyed - another duet, this time with Steve Wonder, who released this song originally in 1985. Their voices seem as they were created to sing together in this refreshed version of Wonder's song. Great execution from the production trio: Tricky Stewart, Aaron Pearce and Kuk Harrell.

Thankful - is a wonderful classical Dion to words and music by Dana Parish & Andrew Hollander. Simple yet powerful arrangements and soring vocals from Céline, she seems in absolute control of her instrument and a diva-like when accompanied by the choir at the end of the song.

At Seventeen - is a cover of Janis Ian's 1975 song which Dion sings during her Céline Show in Las Vegas. It's a reflection song in a new, a slightly Spanish and summery arrangement.

Always Be Your Girl - a song written by husband-and-wife song-writing duo Dana Parish and Andrew Hollander. They watched Céline on Oprah's Next Chapter and were so moved and inspired by Dion's personality, that they sat down and penned Always Be Your Girl for her. It's one of the most important songs of Dion's career as it's capturing her real persona. A great ballad.

Unfinished Song - is another jewel from Diane Warren who is well known for her extraordinary skills for ballad writing. But this is not a tears squeezer buy yet another up-tempo track on the album. It's a get-up and keep-going kind of song: `cause we're all unfinished songs waiting for the best part to come along. Very positive and truly encouraging tune. Unfinished Song was included on the Song for Marion's soundtrack.

How Do You Keep The Music Playing - is Michel Legrand's composition to the lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman for the 1982 film Best Friends. Dion sings this track during her Céline Show in Las Vegas. Although the song has been recorded by many great artists, such as Tony Bennett, George Benson, Frank Sinatra or Barbra Streisand, Dion gives it a new dimension and breaths a new life into it.

Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel) - is a closing track and cover of Billy Joel's from his 1993 album River of Dreams. Beautifully simple and delicate production from Kenny `Babyface' Edmonds.

Edyta Gorniak is the self-titled first international album by the Polish runner-up in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994. The album was produced by Celine Dion's long-time collaborator, Christopher Neil.

Neil managed to collect an impressive bunch of authors for Edyta's record. Edyta's first single WHEN YOU COME BACK TO ME was a huge success with reaching a third place on Asia's MTV channel, losing only to Madonna and Spice Girls. The Scandinavians liked it so much that they used it as a theme for one of their soap operas.

Neil had also managed to introduce Edyta to a wider and more sophisticated audience by enabling her to work with the legendary José Carreras on their Christmas charity song HOPE FOR US.

The album produced four singles and won Gorniak countless awards, one of which was the Spanish Eurocanacion 2001 award.
