3.0 out of 5 stars Decent throwaway entertainment, 25 July 2006
This review is from: Beverly Hills Cop 2 [DVD] (DVD)
Beverly Hills Cop 2 is slicker and funnier than its predecessor, but not quite as charming. Eddie Murphy's ego appears to be a little out of control at times here. This was when he was the most bankable star in Hollywood for a brief time. There are some very funny scenes, but on occasion it looks like Murphy's add libbing has gone a little too far and no one had the nerve to tell him he'd overcooked the joke. It's still slick entertainment though, but it doesn't have the air of realism that the original had. Played more for laughs and explosions it's achieves what it sets out to and for that it's worth 2 hours of anyone's time.

3.0 out of 5 stars A forgotten classic, 25 July 2006
I was lucky enough to pick up a copy of this on R1. It's a somewhat messy film probably due to the rumours that the producers re-edited it long after Tony Scott had finished shooting. The story labours a little at the beginning, and Costner's character is kind of hard to root for because he's not all that pleasant, but that's part of Revenge's charm. It's not clear cut and definitely not predictable despite appearing to show all its cards in the title. Anthony Quinn is great as always and even manages to evoke sympathy for his character at times. Costner's character is very similar to Richard Gere's in Breathless, a bit of a nasty sort, but kinda cool. Madeleine Stowe puts in probably her finest performance too. If you're looking for a film that doesn't tick all the do's and don'ts of a Hollywood mainstream movie then this could well be up your street.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stands the test of time, 25 July 2006
Oddly enough I didn't like this film the first time I watched it, or even the second. Quite how I ever came to watch it a third time I'll never know, but somehow I suddenly "got" what everyone else was seeing. There's something here for everyone. Great characters, great action scenes, wonderful music, tragedy, romance, humour and above all else, entertainment. The story isn't as obvious and formulaic as one would expect from this sort of flick. The characters are well rounded, not all good, not all bad, often a little of both. It's easy to see why Cruise went on to become such a big star after this, and it's also easy to see why so many people still obsess about it. Let's face it, you only have to drop one of the "call signs" into a conversation these days (20 years later) and people still know what you're on about. Great fun.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, 25 July 2006
This review is from: The Hunger [DVD] [1983] (DVD)
I quite like this movie. It's not one I'd recommend to my friends, but it's the first directorial effort of Tony Scott so it's worth a look to see how he cut his teeth. For the most part it's a case of style over substance, all billowing net curtains and slightly open blinds letting in the light. David Bowie is perfectly cast as an ageing vampire, while Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon smoulder in their lusting performances. It is dull in parts and some of it has dated badly, but it's still a good yarn, and you just don't get too many flicks like this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gets better with repeated viewings..., 1 Jun. 2005
The first time I saw this film I thought it was very good, but I then watched it a second time and found that I absolutely loved it!! I've always thought Tony Scott to be a great director ever since True Romance, and now he's teamed up with writer Brian Helgeland who wrote the screenplay for the classic LA Confidential. This truly is a recipe for a great movie - great dialogue, great cast, great acting and wonderfully paced direction as ever by Tony Scott. The build up of the relationship between Creasy and Pita is totally absorbing and is what makes the rest of the film so moving. A great action movie with characters that you can genuinely care about. I recommend this to anyone (unless you can't stand violence of which there's plenty). Thankyou once again Tony Scott.

Conrad's Fate (The Chrestomanci Series, Book 6)
Conrad's Fate (The Chrestomanci Series, Book 6)

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite as good as Changeover, 10 Mar. 2005
Conrad's Fate is certainly worth a few quid of anyone's money. It's not quite as good as my previous favourite Diana Wynne Jones book "Changeover" but there is still plenty here to recommend. As always Ms Wynne Jones paints a wonderful picture of Stallchester and the Stallery Mansion and transports the reader into the very heart of the story. The pace never lets up and I was left guessing right to the end which is always a good thing in my opinion. Books like this more than make up for the wait in between Harry Potter books.
