What a great read .... everything I like about a biography, no endless waffle about stuff we are not interested in. It seems almost like there are three careers within this book which makes it all the more compelling (not just the dreary 'we made it big and did lots of tours'), the initial steps into the music world with the marine girls gives a fascinating insight into the DIY approach in the early 80s and how a enthusiastic label owner could stimulate such interest in what was effectively a garden shed (yes thats where they recorded) band, the EBTG dual careers pre and post trip hop, and life as a mum who gets waved to by George Michael at the school gates.

Excellent stuff.

Shelby Lynne is one of those artists you just gets better and better with age. Most know her for 'I am Shelby Lynne' but her later works are more interesting and mature.

This little ep sums up Shelby in 5 tracks, uplifting, inspiring, spiritual and 'Start me up' just plain funky. Love it!

Its great to see Suzanne Vega back with some original material for the first time in a while.

This is a wonderful album with thought provoking lyrics and some interesting arrangements, a long way from Suzanne and an acoustic guitar.

Its style is most similar to the album 'Days of open hand'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Could have been a classic, 1 Jan. 2014

I so wanted this book to live up to the hype, having been a fan of the man for 30 years, and it did kind of .... so Im giving it five stars!

The writing about his childhood in Manchester has outstanding, a picture into a world that I hadn't lived in and showed the foundations of many of Morrissey's key themes in his music. This section of the book was a real page turner and 150 pages passed in a flash. However once the book moves on to the Smiths forming and his solo career it loses its way, too many scores to settle maybe? I wanted to know so much more about the time in the Smiths and towards the end of the book I was skim reading.

I loved the Patti Smith book 'Just kids' and if this book had been edited and stopped at the point when Johnny Marr knocked on Morrisseys door then this book would have been near perfect.

I still rate Johnny Rogans 'The severed alliance' as a fantastic, well researched and articulate account of the Smiths career and if your looking for something a little more conventional it does justice to all involved.

I really enjoyed the secret footballer articles in the Saturday guardian and both the books have been excellent and insightful reads. I particularly enjoyed some of the curve ball chapters in this book, and found myself enjoying it even more when I (thought) I knew who the author was. This is intelligence, funny and sometimes compassionate writing. I recommend this book.

Scott 1 -4 plus Til the band comes home ..... surely some of the most amazing music ever written.

If you only know Scott Walker from 'The sun ain't gonna shine any more' jump in .... this is where the good stuff is.
