5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 6 Jun. 2015

This series just keeps getting better and better, the period feels real, death is ever present on the battlefield and elsewhere, even central characters are not safe.

Well written and readable. Good to see the Japanese are well represented, could have done with more from the Indians. Lacks detail such as Orders of Battle, equipment etc

3.0 out of 5 stars Churchill propaganda, 25 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A superbly written version of the great war story told by someone who saw the war in many of its facets. These volumes could be entitled "why Winston Churchill was right and everyone else was wrong". Churchill is careful to praise his victims before he condemns them, Asquith, Lloyd George, Haig and Jellicoe are all derided. Churchill lays the foundations of the "lions led by donkeys" view of the first world war.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 8 Nov. 2014

Well paced, well written, an epic and a triumph. Ceaser's greatest victory written for a modern audience. Plenty of action, the battles are as always well described so the reader knows what is happening and why. The device used at the start of the book to build tension works well. Glad to know that, despite the death of several central characters the series will continue. Heartily recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure brilliance, 10 Oct. 2014

Flashman, a Victorian James Bond, but, unlike Bond, a coward who's fear of losing face constantly places him in physical danger. These books are his memoirs, scrupulously honest accounts of his adventures. Humorous, horrifying, scandalous, superbly researched historical fiction; just about the best there is.

The story zips along, the characters are well written, the battles frequent, bloody and often fatal for central characters. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars An ordinary battalion at war, 21 July 2014

This review is from: Carmarthen Pals (Kindle Edition)
An excellent account of a Pals battalion at war. The 38th Division, with which the Carmarthen pals fought had an unspectacular war, but this book is all the better for that giving a good insight of the war as experienced by an ordinary battalion. The 38th Division was in involved in several of the major actions on the western front; suffering severe losses taking Mametze wood early in the battle of the Somme , fighting on the first day of the battle of 3rd Ypres and seeing action in the hundred days. What comes across from reading this book is how these big attacks were only short episodes in the long, attritional, morale sapping struggle of the western front; most casualties being suffered in dribs and drabs as the battalion rotates in and out of the front line.
Also recommended: The Swansea pals.

Marius' Mules VI: Caesar's Vow
Marius' Mules VI: Caesar's Vow
Price: £1.98

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent as always, 7 Mar. 2014
Mr Turney writes another great story and moves the tale of Caeser's Gallic conquest towards its inevitable Waterloo. The reader should be warned though, whilst the other books dealt with warfare as a nasty event in which some civilians became unintentionally involved this book deals with warfare at its most brutal. These are not friendly legions come to liberate the Gauls from their own despotic kings or from foreign invaders; these legions are terrifying, brutal, bloody destroyers. Caesar didn't conquer the Belgae as such, he almost wiped them from the earth.
I look forward to book VII with great anticipation; keep up the good work Mr Turney.

A brief stop in Rome gives Marcus the opportunity to attempt revenge on those who his murdered family. Well written and very fast paced, the streets of ancient Rome come to life. A more realistic depiction of life in the ancient world than the overly dangerous and lewd view usually shown on TV.

A Storm of Spears: Understanding the Greek Hoplite in Action
A Storm of Spears: Understanding the Greek Hoplite in Action
Price: £4.79

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, but heavy going, 15 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A superb appraisal of Hoplite warfare, meticulously researched, based on ancient sources and modern reconstruction. Being an accademic work this is somewhat heavy going. Having witnessed several hundred dark age re-enactors fighting in shield walls I believe Mr Mathews conclusions are valid: the Hoplites fought at spear point distance, probably wielding their spears underarm. Highly Recommended; similar treatments on Hellenistic pike and Roman legions would complete the story.
