One of the scariest books I have ever read. I even prefer it to The Woman In Black, and that is saying something!

3.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Film Ruined by Deafening Music, 18 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is one of my all-time favourite films. Having only ever had it on an old video recorded off the television, I was excited about getting the blu-ray from Amazon. I had read the negative reviews about the music, but thought people might just be moaning about nothing.

Sadly not. A great film has been ruined by the constant pounding of loud music. In the original there was a slow build-up of tension and also emotion, with appropriate soundtrack music to complement it. It was pretty much perfect. The new version is completely different. The cacophony of rock music from the period (whilst appropriate for the period, if used sparingly) was everywhere, all the time, ruining the tension and emotion of key parts of the film. Half the time it was really a struggle to try to hear what the characters were saying; they were drowned out by the music. Such a shame. It could have been wonderful.

The extra scenes were good though. Really shed some light on the characters, and the family of Ponyboy Curtis especially.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely terrifying. Gripping and full of suspense., 27 July 2011

This really is an excellent book. I read a lot of books, and quite a few crime-type thrillers. This is one of the best I have read. It is utterly terrifying and full of suspense. A real page turner. The descriptions of OCD and the trials of a sufferer are spot on. The story of Cathy's relationship with her violent partner is told with such skill that it is literally terrifying to read - like watching a Hitchcock horror. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the bad reviews, 24 Jun. 2011

This review is from: The Slap (Kindle Edition)
This novel is controversial. But perhaps that is for the wrong reasons. I marked it down because of the appalling foul language throughout, which is unnecessary and detracts from what is actually an excellent plot and a compelling narrative. Expletives and graphic sex litter the pages of this book, and that's a shame. It's as if the author is deliberately courting controversy and notoriety, and with material this good he doesn't need to. If the "c" words and "f" words were removed, this would be a much better novel. As it is, it's still a good one. Give it a go. It might get you thinking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music, 23 Oct. 2010

This is beautiful music. One of the best soundtracks I've heard. I can't stop listening to it. The film was great, but the music takes it to another level. And it stands on its own as a piece of art. You don't have to watch the film to appreciate the soundtrack. Just buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Retro Class, 29 April 2009
This is a great watch. It takes me back to the 1980s when I originally owned one of these. It is so good to have it back. It is clear to read, easy to operate, simple to set. A classic watch, a great design, a retro classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Devastating, 23 May 2008
I can only echo what has been said by so many reviewers. I read this book in less than two days. I couldn't put it down. The last couple of pages are as incredible and devastating as anything I have ever read. I would urge everyone to read this book. You will never forget it.
