This book is frankly amazing. I've not found a book by a first time author written as capably as this since Charles Stross' first books.

There are a few action scenes (which superficially resemble Asher's splatterpunk SF work, with far less gore and much less violence), but overall it's a well thought out book with decently written characters and some great world-building.

Very much recommend this book. Pleasantly surprised, a gem hidden in an avalanche of mediocrity.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bought this from outside Amazon. Very erratic readings. ..., 20 Feb. 2016
Bought this from outside Amazon.

Very erratic readings. Has declared an entire wall to be electrified, and also seems to struggle with some of the other walls.

For example, there is a wall which when sweeping left to right, it detects a large steel plate on the left. From right to left however, it reports nothing.

I've tried small movements to home in on said plate, but the direction of travel seems to be the deciding factor every time. If I place the device directly on the plate, it correctly finds it. If I move the device over the plate from the right! It doesn't detect it.

I know the plate is there, as I drilled through the plasterboard to find it.

Bought to replace an EKV F4-120mm which was chirping at 900rpm. This one also chirps.

Suspect either a fake or a bad batch at manufacturers. Sourcing a replacement F4-120mm from somewhere else.

(chirping fan was swapped with non-chirping fan and continued to chirp in new fan mount, but non-chirping fan did not start chirping - definitely not a case problem, the fan itself is broken)

2.0 out of 5 stars Sadly, dissapointed., 9 Jun. 2015

Meh.

You know, honestly, this is a good book. It's well written, the plot's great, and the character development is peerless in the genre. I can't complain. Even the science is well thought out and follows established (for the most part) principles. Great stuff.

Except for two tiny things which horribly damaged the experience for me.

Firstly, the unresolved story arcs, of which I could count a handy 3 or 4. I'm alright with a plot that spans several books, and that requires long story arcs, some of which will naturally span books. However, it felt at the end of Nemesis Games that the authors had just stopped. Nothing was resolved.

Secondly, the tacked-on "AND THEN ALIENS" ending. There's been hide nor hair of the little fellas all the way through the book (there is mention of ***SPOILER*** missing ships ***SPOILER*** but nothing else), then suddenly the authors drop a "BTW HERE ARE THE ALIENS OMG THEY'RE EXCITING AREN'T THEY" in the final few pages and end the book.

It feels like (if I'm being generous) half a book. If I'm not being quite so kind, it feels like they broke a larger book in two, padded it a bit and then slapped on a few surprise cliffhangers to make sure I bought the next.

The first two books were packed with promise; ideas, convincing aliens, imagination and all the other best parts of the genre. The third sucked for the same reason the fifth does; it's just a long slapfight between human factions and nothing out of the ordinary happens.

I don't think I'll be picking up the sixth book. Sorry, I've been a loyal reader (even through book 3), but I can't handle the tedium and cheap cliffhangers.

Jesus wept.

And when he did, the tears fell to earth and poisoned the ground around the factory which made this rot.

Avoid - unless you like Johnnie Walker, in which case I wish you godspeed.

Flawless.

It's SF but in pretty heavy disguise - well worth a read. Immaculate pacing and plot, solid (hypothetical) science, and just the right blend of world building and character development. The cliches present (some fairly stale tropes) actually work _with_ the book rather than against it, and the result is well worth your time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pretty but useless., 29 Aug. 2014

Hi.

Singularly unimpressed with this.

1) If you fill it with cold water and take a drink in a warm room, it'll then leak. Not fun.

2) The cartridges are twice as expensive as the near rivals to this device.

3) After a while, the mouth bit starts to smell like damp rubber. Probably because it never actually dries out, even with the lid fully open.

There are rivals which are cheaper and do the same thing, plus they don't stink of mouldy rubber after a few months. I'd pick one of them.

This isn't a bad book by any definition, but it's not hard SF. I'd say it's more pulp-YA fiction.

A little overlong, and a little too "safe" to merit anything more than 3 stars, it's nevertheless well written and edited and has a decent set of characters. The worldbuilding is decent, though not on a par with Stross/Banks/etc.

Yup.

Lovecraftian horror, hints of exobiology, more Bob, more Laundry, more horny horsies.

Stross at his finest - very much worth the money. Buy it. At £1.28 it's a very satisfying evening's reading, and while it's not got the heft of a normal Laundry novel (next one isn't out until NEXT YEAR!!) it's still a pretty spiffing read.
