5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning album from Soom & Disrupt, 19 May 2012
This review is from: Ode 2 A Carrot (Audio CD)
It's important to note here that Soom T and Disrupt are two seperate artists - and christ do they make a good mix. Soom's vocals are vivacious and unique: they ricochet between childlike lilts, high speed melodic rap and thick Glaswegian accent. With this is Disrupt's music that straddles bass-orientated dub and a more retro chiptune sound. The combination is nothing less than fantastic and has resulted in a brilliant collection of songs. Particular highlights are Soom's soaring vocals on 'Boom Shiva', the thick soupy bass of 'Weed is Sweeter', and the combination of both in 'I need Weed'... In case you couldn't tell there is a recurrent weed theme. I don't think there is a single weak song on the album. Even 'Wee Rant', which is essentially a recording of Soom T ranting about the police, is hilarious, powerful, and almost hypnotic with the dub track beneath it. Because the songs are so consistently excellent I'd very highly recommend purchasing the album on vinyl. One of my favourite albums that easily scores 5 stars for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well filmed but ultimately insubstantial, 9 Jan. 2012
This review is from: 13 Tzameti [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
After all of the positive reviews on Amazon I thought that this would be breath-taking. Tzameti is beautifully filmed and it is undeniably an "art" film made with the discerning viewer in mind rather than easy family watching. However it also relies heavily upon the shock of its brutal "game" - much like the Deer Hunter. But unfortunately Tzameti has far less characterisation and motivation than the Deer Hunter features and so it is a much less memorable film. Most characters have only a few lines of speech before they are whisked away and by the end of the film we still know next to nothing about the film's protagonist. This severely restricts the opportunity for tension (we barely know him, why should we care what happens to him?) and leaves the viewer feeling rather empty and unaffected.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterful piece of cinema, 25 Sept. 2011
This review is from: Boogie Nights [DVD] [1998] (DVD)
I didn't realise quite how explicit this film would be, both in the sense that it is a film about pornography and thus heavily involves it, but also in its confrontation with humanity, society and culture - but it packs this punch with hilarity, brilliant settings, and a stellar soundtrack. Perhaps a more extreme version of Pulp Fiction, in several senses. If you're the sort of person who doesn't shy away from intelligent films - this is a must see.

5.0 out of 5 stars A move towards future bass, 7 Sept. 2011
This review is from: Ritual Union (MP3 Download)
Interestingly Little Dragon have moved ever-so-slightly away from the playfulness of their earlier records and towards a more bass-orientated kind of music. The album still retains their core style, but the future bass (a post-dubstep genre that a lot of people fled to after dubstep became so commercialised) influence is clear, there are moments that wouldn't sound entirely alien in a George Fitzgerald or Hudson Mohawke song. The whole thing is packed with synths, 'Summertearz' is like a future bass song at half speed, and there are even some eerier moments, especially in 'When I Go Out'. Perhaps if you're not a listener of bass music then this move would come as a surprise and my descriptions might even sound disparaging, but this movement seems almost natural at a time when a singer like Thom Yorke makes song with Burial. There's something about emotive voices that really lends them to minimal bass driven music.

Furthermore, Little Dragon manage this shift without losing any of the vivacity or freshness that I personally love them for. Yukimi, as always, delivers stunning vocals that are haunting but warm, playful but melancholic.

I do hope they create something as astonishingly powerful and affecting as my favourite Little Dragon song 'Twice' again, which seems very far away from these songs, although admittedly it was never especially alike any other Little Dragon song (or any other song?). Overall though, this is a fantastic album, perhaps not an absolute 10 out of 10 classic on level with The Beatles, but certainly a fun fresh move in a new direction with some real substance behind it. Absolutely worth buying.

2.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, until the microphone stopped working, 18 April 2010
Was an excellent headset for the price, until the microphone suddenly stopped working for no discernible reason, after two/three weeks.
