From a distance this looks quite nice but it is just too thin. Viewed up close, it is pretty see-through and not of the highest quality.

Menzel's voice is as lovely as always and the arrangement is traditional and quite charming but ultimately somewhat forgettable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not great, not dreadful., 16 Jun. 2014

I keep hoping that we'll see a true return to form from Charlaine Harris and while Midnight Crossroad has some interesting, albeit underdeveloped characters, this doesn't compare with some of her earlier work. It does feel that there's a lot being held back for subsequent novels so there should be more to come but it would be bettter to have fewer characters to really embrace, rather than numerous characters about which you know or care little.

There are various nods to Charlaine's other series which is a treat for fans but this is unlikely to hook those new to her work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Appalling quality, 7 April 2014

Fell apart in my hand while I was removing it from the packaging. Concept is nice but execution is very poor with some embellishments clearly designed to be used elsewhere as the loop to add a necklace was still in place. Dreadful.

Great start to a new series and leaves the reader wanting more. Well constructed world where good and evil aren't always what they seem.

Shadow of Night: (All Souls 2)
Shadow of Night: (All Souls 2)
by Deborah Harkness

3.0 out of 5 stars Verging on self-indulgent and lacking pace, 10 Aug. 2012
Having thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series I was looking forward to the second but have been disappointed. It feels like the book was written largely as a means of demonstrating the authors knowledge of history rather than to move along the narrative, with too many poorly-defined characters shoe-horned in. Pacing was painfully slow at times and some key elements rushed over.

I will read the conclusion when it's released but won't await it with the same level of anticipation!

4.0 out of 5 stars An intelligent supernatural novel, 4 Jan. 2012
Nicely paced for the most part with interesting characters and a gradual building of tension. The academic setting and intelligent insight makes for a more challenging but rewarding read than many recent vampire novels.

Beautiful production, a great mix of songs and a fabulous voice. A perfect Christmas album which you'll want to listen to throughout the year.

Jump!
Jump!
by Jilly Cooper
Edition: Hardcover

1.0 out of 5 stars Not even the appearance of Rupert can salvage Jump!, 17 Nov. 2010
This review is from: Jump! (Hardcover)
Having always been a big fan of Jilly Cooper's inimitable style, I was very excited to learn that she had a new book. Sadly Jump! is the poor relation of Cooper's best works and comparing it with the likes of Polo and Rivals does the older books an injustice.

Jump! is overly long, the proliferation of unnecessary and unlikeable secondary characters is a hindrance to the flow of the story. I personally had no empathy for the lead character Etta, who is a bit of a sap with none of the spunkiness and gumption of Cooper's usual heroines.

Even Rupert Campbell-Black couldn't save this book I'm afraid!
