How Mumbo-Jumbo Conquered the World: A Short History of Modern Delusions
How Mumbo-Jumbo Conquered the World: A Short History of Modern Delusions
by Francis Wheen
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.49

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and true, 16 April 2013
It is not a page turner by any means but it is a brilliant critique on the on going linguistic attack that quacks, pseudo scientists, post-modern types and politicians are currently waging on science. It's quite depressing at times but this is mostly due to the subject matter.

It is also a quite wonderful reference for all science folk who who public engagement work.

2.0 out of 5 stars Looks amazing but not functional., 11 Oct 2011
Looks great, very comfortable but acquires punctures with a time constant of about 2-weeks for the single 1-week for the double. I bought 2 doubles and 2 singles and all went this way. If you are very careful, setting them on rugs and cleaning them of grit/dust constantly you can probably double this.

Alas the punctures are effectively unrepairable (partly due to the flexing material partly as they always occur as seams).

Pity as if this was made from Rubber and not Vinyl it would be excellent.

3.0 out of 5 stars Looks cool but doesn't last, 30 Jun 2011
So this once up looks really really funky and is very comfortable if you are happy to lie low. As such I bought two and one chair version for a living room.

Unfortunately after a week of really very little use a small (~2mm) rip appeared at the seam joint of one. I fixed this (with great effort as they always rip at the seam joints and as they are pvc not rubber it's very hard to fix leaks at any creases) but unfortunately it was just the start. Basically over the next month I fixed probably ~15 small rips (all at seams). In the end I just gave up as the repairs ruin the look and don't last.

It's pretty unfortunate as if they made these more substantially and maybe out of rubber I'd fully recommend them.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not science mysticism but ok, 21 Sep 2006
Firstly this is not a book on science, it is on mysticism, and sadly like most of this forumla it gets an awful lot wrong. Check out the film's reviews for a more honest cross section of views. If your into pseudo-science, philosophy or mysticism you'll love this as it is a pretty well thought out book. Personally I think twisting and altering science to a belief is a dangerous thing to do.

Anyway please do not get this book and think you will learn anything that you could say to a qualified physicist. If you know any of the "scientific" subject matter covered this will frustrate the hell out of you.
