5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best authors around, 13 July 2012

This review is from: Silenced (Paperback)
Yet again, a superb novel from Mr P. He has such an ability to make his stories all the more gripping, because they are based firmly in the reality of everyday life of young people. There are so many references to the sort of things which fill contemporary life, and this gives the reader a well painted background for the events which take place.

As with all his books, it is hard to put them down. I had a day off and read it in one go. Worth every penny and looking forward to the next novel from this very talented author.

4.0 out of 5 stars A really good read, 13 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: My Story (Hardcover)
Lovely book. A bit heavy at first on the more technical bits of diving, but it opens up into a revealing story of the effort that Tom has had to put in, and the brightness of his personality, how normal a boy he was, and the pride which his very close family have in him and all their children. The closeness of his bond with his dad is apparent all the way through, and the emotional drain which being a young athlete has is highlighted.
What is also apparent is how random it is to win in this sport, surely one of the most difficult because of its subjective marking.

The overall impression is just what a normal person Tom is, and what a good person he is too. Worth every penny.

I look great already, and I am nicking it off my mum. And she is 78. Loads of it in a bottle, and it feels great on your face. Splash it on all over.

5.0 out of 5 stars 10/10, 27 Oct. 2011

This review is from: comin 2 gt u (Paperback)
comin 2 gt uThis is a superb read. The lead character starts with a niggling bully problem which builds and builds to a thrilling climax. What singles this book out as special is the author's use of the mundane and ordinary things of everyday life, the computer games, the snacks kids eat, the texting, against which background the bullying threat grows and grows to its tremendous climax. The awful nature of bullying, the havoc it wreaks on one person's life, is brilliantly portrayed. The incidental comedy is the backdrop against which the plot moves along.
Ultimately, it is very life affirming. It is a MUST READ book for any school age person - and their parents. Fast moving and full of colour, Nick Hornby would be proud to have written this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars As sharp as Sharpe, 12 Dec. 2008

These days, a new author has to be pretty good to get published, and this is a very good author. It was hard to put the book down. The three main characters are united by their respective handicaps; physical, psychological and professional. The quadriplegic accepts his fate, the virgin doesn't understand hers, and the actor pretends that his is not there. They are thrown together in a situation where they are all exploited by others, but in so doing, achieve more than they could otherwise have hoped for. The story is gripping, darkly funny, and worthy of Tom Sharpe at his best.
A minor cavil - there is too great a reliance on male genitalia to grab a laugh or for swearing - but that apart, this is a wonderful book, hugely entertaining, and a great Christmas gift. I've just ordered 12 for that very reason.
