3.0 out of 5 stars Very Sweet, Very Delicate Flavour, 14 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I purchased this as an ingredient for our wedding cake icing because we wanted pure white vanilla buttercream icing without using any of the nasty artificial white vanilla products available. This appealed because it was a very faint colour (compared to the usual brown for vanilla extracts), and was also 100% organic.

The delivery was very swift, and they certainly give you plenty of vanilla extract in the two bottles! However we found that for the icing you had to put a lot of it in to detect the vanilla taste, which subsequently made it too sweet (although the colour was about as close as you could get to pure white without using artificial stuff, which was a plus). I don't know how useful it would be for small batches of other sorts of cakes, but in our instance it wasn't ideal because of its sweetness and very delicate vanilla flavour for quite a high price.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Blessing for Every Man, 2 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having prayed about which Bible version would be most suitable for deepening my devotions to and knowledge of the Lord, I was drawn to the New Living Translation. The NLT has operates a 'dynamic equivalence' in translation, which in effect means the Scriptures are translated 'thought for thought' rather than literally word for word. This makes not only for an incredibly smooth and accessible modern English translation, but a pleasure in exploring the Bible I had not found with other versions. The NLT website explains in more detail about their translating process, and offers comparisons to other methods/versions.

I was also drawn to this Bible as a way of deepening my male spirituality, and this edition offers a remarkable array of resources to help men at all stages of their Christian journey. From insightful commentaries beneath most of the passages, to biographies of noteworthy men in the Bible, to helpful summaries of each book, this Bible presents not only God's Word, but a rich seam of guidance to help our understanding of Scripture and develop our spiritual maturity.

Bound in a handsome faux-leather cover, it is the perfect size to carry with you, and also study with. I cannot recommend it highly enough, and may you be equally as blessed if you choose to invest in a copy as well :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh yesh!, 25 April 2011
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
Having wanted to introduce my American girlfriend to the delights of Churchill I began to show her the various adverts of him posted online. But this was not enough. I wanted something tangible to show her the full Churchillian glory of this mighty hound. So I ordered this keychain and by golly did it fit the bill! Like the great man himself, this Churchill the Dog successfully crossed the Atlantic undamaged, proving his durability. And what delight was provoked when it was discovered he let out the most joyful "OOOH YESH!" upon pressing his ample tummy. It really is comically loud, and he now sits astride my girlfriend's dashboard helping her to navigate. If a decision is being made about a turning, and out of the discussion one of us presses the dog, then Churchill's word is law. A fine purchase from the greatest of all dogs - highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Hidden Gem, 9 May 2010
The BBC have curiously made this excellent production difficult to find, and so after having read 'Daniel Deronda' several years ago it has only been this recent Dutch import that has enabled me to see whether they could effectively transform the novel on screen. It is difficult to say whether one should read the novel before watching the DVD or vice versa.

If you do read first, you will see the ambitious nature of any attempts to portray Eliot's rich prose on screen. And naturally for the sake of drama, some of the philsophical subtly of Eliot's finely-wrought plot has been lost. Yet the BBC have been able to strike a good balance, with a sweeping adaptation that really gives a taste of the novel's characters and central themes. Gwendolen in particular is appropriately coquettish, even if some of the book's later pathos is perhaps lost. Daniel is represented well, although again the sweeping nature of the production loses some of his substance.

If you watch the DVD first - pick up a copy of the book! All the hidden details the adaptation cannot portray will come alive in rewarding detail. Eliot's novel is deep, dense and magically captivating. Anyone seeking a rare flavour of 19th Century Jewish London will find wonderfully atmospheric empathy from the author. The DVD itself brings alive the key details, but leaves plenty more to be discovered.

A worthy purchase - especially as this title has been unavailable (except to American audiences) for several years. All fans of the novel will find plenty to intrigue them in a sympathetic adaptation. And all those approaching the story for the first time will hopefully find a novel of magnificent richness.

The Da Vinci Code and the Secrets of the Temple: The Master of TheTemple
The Da Vinci Code and the Secrets of the Temple: The Master of TheTemple
by Robin Griffith-Jones
Edition: Paperback
Price: 4.62

5.0 out of 5 stars Real History More Fascinating Than Brown Fiction..., 3 April 2010
This is a short, accessible and riveting guide to the real story behind the 'history' that is the apparent basis of Dan Brown's best-seller 'The Da Vinci Code'. Unlike other attempts to jump on the Brown bandwagon, Dr Griffith Jones keeps his writing succinct and short, as he only has real history at heart, rather than simply profit - plus he writes with the authority of being the actual Master of the Temple. All the questions a discerning reader (of religious or non-religious background) might have are answered here, and the author manages to convey a grand sweep of fascinating Christian history and theological insights in just a few chapters. In this case, fact is more exciting than fiction. If you get the chance, meet Dr Griffith Jones for yourself and take a tour of the beautiful Temple Church in London.

This collection of Taize chants provides a liturgical journey that manages to capture the wider Taize experience. Perfect for unwinding at the end of the day, it truly is a wonderful way to express all the emotions of the Christian story.

5.0 out of 5 stars DC Delivers the Goods, 5 Sep 2009
David Coverdale and friends certainly produced the goods in what is likely to be Whitesnake's last studio album. There is a good balance between typically snakey hard rock anthems, and romantic ballads sung only like David can. Very impressive package, the special edition is particularly well put together. The songs performed live are also superbly powerful, but it must be doubtful whether DC's voice can hold out for much longer. But this album showcases the group at its mature, powerful best, and is a worthy investment for any rock fan, and perhaps a fitting end to a glittering career of a true rock legend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Sucessful Title, 30 Aug 2005
This textbook is perfect for anyone wishing to study GCSE Latin or equivalent, and complements the rest of the course. The book is well laid out, with good use of colour photographs/maps and has excellent introductions to areas of Roman history and culture at the end of each chapter. The course itself systematically leads the student through new grammatical concepts which are contained in well written pieces of Latin text and stories. The grammar section at the back is very clear and summarises all the necessary grammar and vocabulary well. An excellent way to study a fascinating language!
