5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Muppet Movies, 28 Sept. 2009
This is one of the most funny Muppet Movies, where the whole muppet cast travels to London. How can you go wrong with Jim Henson at the helm?

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent TV series, awful DVD product, 17 Dec. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Marco Polo [1982] [DVD] (DVD)
The TV series of Marco Polo is one of my most beloved TV series of all time, but sadly the DVD authoring is below average. The image is not crisp and clear and the colors are washed out. In scenes taken out in the sun, the contrast is too high, while in scenes taken in darkness everything is very dark. Although, even so, the quality is better than VHS, it is clear that no restoration whatsoever has gone on the image of this DVD. The picture is presented in its original 4:3 format.

No restoration has gone on the sound either. The DVD is presented in "glorious" Dolby Digital 1.0 with the lips of the actors many times falling out of sync with the sound of their words.

The DVD set contains no subtitles of any kind. I would accept this from a DVD set released 5 years ago, but I consider unacceptable for a DVD released in 2008 not to contain english subtitles for the hard of hearing. DVD authors "Scanbox" display complete disregard for the hard of hearing people, since they could have included the subtitles at minimal cost.

The movie is offered in 4 Episodes, each on each own DVD. The 4 DVDs have the following durations: DVD1=136 min, DVD2=89 min, DVD3=89 min, DVD4=136 min, total 450 min, or 7 hours and 30 min. Needless to say, there are no extras of any kind. Each stationary dvd "menu" offers the option "play" and "scene selection" (each DVD is divided in only 6 scenes).

I've seen reviews for the German and French DVD editions of Marco Polo. They both have the same 4:3 picture format, offer soundtracks in German/French and English, and have no subtitles. However, both contain a very informative interview with Giuliano Montaldo, producer of the TV series (duration 28:05 min), while the German version contains in addition the following deleted scenes, sadly only in the German language:

1.In Tibet (03:15min.)
2.Mongolian customs (02:20min.)
3.Mistake (05:50min.)
4.Subjecting (01:54min.)
5.Combat plays: (01:37 min.)
6.The queue (02:09min.)
7.Unfairness (04:13min.)
8.Dreams (08:03min.)
9.The mother (01:43min.)
10.The strange son (03:39min.)
11.The way on the ship (02:54min.)
12.Martyrdom (06:26min.)
13.Capture (01:31min.)
14.The burning sources (07:34min.)
15.The plague in Hormuz (29:05min.)

Total 15 scenes with a duration of over 81 minutes.

The duration of the German DVD is listed as 505 min while the duration of the French DVD is listed as 565 min (!)

From the screenshots I've seen I believe that the picture quality of the German DVD seems similar to this offering, however the picture quality of the French DVD is superior, with more lively colours.

Still, I don't regret buying this box set, as the Marco Polo series is excellent, and it seems that it will take years to see a decent restoration effort, if one appears.

I hope what I've written here will help you decide...

4.0 out of 5 stars Subtitles, 4 Dec. 2008
This review is from: The Pallisers [DVD] [1974] (DVD)
Having purchased the Region 2 set, and although fearing from what I gathered from the internet that it had no subtitles, I can now confirm that the whole set contains English Subtitles for the Hard of Hearing.

I too want to point out to the webmasters that the accurate listing of all subtitles which are contained in a DVD is very important, often a deciding factor for purchasing a DVD, especially for foreign customers whom I understand are a large part of Amazon's customers: But is sadly much lacking in this field. Please take the time needed when listing a product to list ALL language/subtitles options.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is not a double dip, 30 Nov. 2008
Some people complain that "this is only half of season 4" and then rather naively say that they will wait to buy the whole season 4.

Let's make this clear now: there will not be a 'complete season 4' boxset. The first half of the american season 4 is released in DVD as "season 4.0" in the US and "season 4" in the UK. Then, the last 10 episodes will be released as "Season 4.5" in the US and "Season 5" in the UK.

So buy this set without fear, you'll need to buy both sets "season 4" and "season 5" anyways.

After "season 5" is released, the only combination offered will be the whole "seasons 1 to 5" box set that will cost a lot more money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Another bad treatment of Region 2 fans., 8 July 2004
The same boxset in Region 1 contains 2 more tele-movies, "The Gathering" (B5 pilot) and "In the Beginning" with full commentaries. Here we don't get them, maybe to make us buy the stand-alone DVDs for these 2 tele-movies that are available a long time now -- Only these were bare-bones dvds that had no commentaries. Thirdspace / River of Souls / A Call to Arms are excellent tele-movies worth buying, but sadly they force us again to buy the Region 1 NTSC version in order to get the complete set. :(
