This is a brilliantly written, in-depth look into the life of one of America's most beloved musical icons, with a hard glimpse into the inner workings of the music industry.
Having grown up with (and still loving) the early songs that propelled Johnny Cash to stardom, it was fascinating to read how some of those songs were inspired, his rise to popularity, and the subsequent decades-long battle as he tried to find his way through drugs, adultery, and the loss of his muse. Not one to give up, he becomes an inspiration when he comes back into his own near the end of his life. His is a story well worth reading and Robert Hilburn delivered it wonderfully in this unbiased, straight-forward biography. Throughout the pages I laughed, I cried, I got angry, and was uplifted. A terrific read I'd recommend to anybody!
