5.0 out of 5 stars Very Funny, 29 Sept. 2012
The upper middle classes appeared to me, that they couldn't wait to get rid of their sons to boarding school as soon as they could, without the love and affection all children should have.
The Dad, in this book, without doubt loves is son dearly. Despite his many failings, he never gives up on him.
His letters, (and only the British have this wonderful sense of humour), are very funny and entertaining.
Glad that the son,(Charles) kept the letters from his Dad.
A really good book. All of us with grown up sons will relate to the letters.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some major artists missing, 4 Jan. 2012
I bought this book, having a long interest in soul music from the southern states, but I was disappointed with some artists not mentioned at all. Nothing on the great Irma Thomas, or Doris Duke or Sam Dees, or Allen Toussaint ( nothing at all from New Orleans).

Too much time on Muscle Shoals (great as the music is).

Needs a "Volume 2" to cover so many more worthy artists!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Genius, 17 May 2011
Any of the Excellent Sides of Swamp Dogg volumes are amazing value, but Volume 2 is the best (Volume 1 not far behind)

The two volumes account for Swamp Dogg's (Jerry Williams Jnr) first 4 albums, all of which are brilliant.

His voice is very nasal (sounds a lot like Van Morrison), but it's the content of the songs that make this guy an exceptional talent. Some are very serious (racism) some are excellent love songs, but it's the hilarious man/ woman relationship songs that stand out "Wife sitter" off the Gag a Maggot Album is The Dogg at his best!

He has some of the best session men in the south playing on these albums, including one of the greatest bass players (Robert 'Pops' Popwell)

This is music from the early 70's onwards, but I've never tired of this guy!

Check out the albums too of Irma Thomas, Doris Duke, and Freddie North to name a few, where his is songwriter, arranger and producer!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Motown Masterpiece, 11 Jan. 2011
This review is from: What's Going On (Audio CD)
One of only a handful of albums I have on CD and vynyl, the only thing dated are some of the phrases in the lyrics.
The musicianship is outstanding. (especially the great James Jameson on bass)
Great string arangements from David Van Depitte, and Marvellous Marvin,s beautiful voice riding on top of it all.

This album had a profound effect on me in my youth in the early 70's, and I still take pleasure from playing it almost 40 years on.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5* film, 29 Nov. 2010
This review is from: A Man For All Seasons [DVD] (DVD)
The brilliant Paul Scofield has the lead roll in this superb film.

He is one of the all time greats. The script is sharp, some great cinematography, and brilliantly directed and produced. The best film of the 60's

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the few great British composers, 21 April 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very worthy tribute by Tony Palmer. I didn't know much about Vaughan Williams, but have enjoyed his best known works for decades. Some great interview footage of his friends, family and fellow composers.

The only downside was the repeated use of violent images (one in particular was of a dead child in the middle east in some recent conflict) which was used twice.
If Palmer intended to shock, then images of the Great War, (in which RVW served)would have been more appropriate.

I would recommend this DVD to those who are fond the music and career of Raiph Vaughan Williams.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Original, 19 Mar. 2010
Gil is a true original, with wide influences from soul, jazz and blues.
He has a dry, biting sense of humour too.
One of my favourite songs of all time is Pieces of a Man. Just Brian Jackson on piano and the great Ron Carter on bass to back a wonderful, soulful voice.
His backing band too are representative of the best session men of the early 70's.
This is a great compilation of his recordings with the Flying Dutchman label.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a classic album, 1 Mar. 2010
This review is from: Steve McQueen (Audio CD)
There are several brilliant tracks. For me, Bonny is the best track.
The Sprouts do have there own sound and style, and I always like those who write their own material.
I can't make out the 1st track. Sounds like country music!

A worthy re-issue for those looking to collect 80's British rock.

5.0 out of 5 stars From the "Golden'' era of BBC drama, 23 Dec. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Wonder scripts, acting and direction, this is BBC drama at it's best.
You can feel the tension as the Escape line is constantly under threat from discovery. Many of the fie cast made there names in this series. Clifford Rose in particular is brilliant as Kessler, but all of the crew make this memorable television.
