5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect Western., 26 Dec. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This latest restoration is by far the best DVD release of this classic film. Having the original release aspect ratio is a joy to the eye since it fills the entire scope of a widescreen TV. The two DVD set includes all aspect ratios that this film has seen in over the years in both mono and stereo sound. The set includes the re-release trailer along with a commentary option by Stevens Jr plus a documentary on the film itself. The colour and detail are superb and the film looks as though it was released yesterday instead of over 60 years ago. In my opinion this film could never be bettered if someone were to remake it today. It's a case of perfect casting alongside perfect Direction and perfect cinematography. As a further bonus a book accompanies the set telling you more or less everything you might want to know about the film.

3.0 out of 5 stars Subtitle alert!, 18 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This new release has been restored and looks good on the screen BUT English speaking viewers beware! The soundtrack is available in English as well as French however when watching the English language version the viewer is subjected to French subtitles! It would appear that the dvd contains no provision for turning off the French subtitles. When watching the disc in French, subtitles do not appear. The cc button on the remote also does not function when playing this disc. With the exception of the trailers, the other extras on this disc are in French only. For French viewers I would give this review 4 Stars!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Jekyll and Hyde Show Biz legend, 14 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A delightful and well written biography on Terry Nelhams and his alter ego Adam Faith. It's highly unlikely that after reading this book that anyone presumably interested in the subject matter, will need to read more about the man and his career! I read Adam's autobiography, which as with most autobiographies (both the good and the bad ones) tend to be somewhat self serving, but with this book we finally get to see the three-dimensional Adam Faith. The author has done his research and has separated the facts from the usual fan magazine type gossip and half-truths which all celebrities generate to a greater or lesser extent. The reader and/or the fan will conclude that it was John Barry, and to a lesser extent, the input of Jack Good who really reinvented Terry Nelhams into Adam Faith the pop star; and without their input it's quite likely that the dear old Adam we know today might never have come into being. Part of what makes this book so readable is the author's use of whimsy and irony when describing certain incidents in Adam's life. I like that the author also puts those moments into context by identifying what else was occurring at that time in the music business and society at large. I believe that both the fan and the more casual reader will come away from reading this book with a good insight into the life and times of Adam Faith, the man, the actor, the singer, the Manager, the financier and the husband and the father.

Dusty Springfield: Full Circle [DVD]
Dusty Springfield: Full Circle [DVD]

Price: £7.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Dusty memories!., 14 Nov. 2014
As a lifetime fan of someone, who in my opinion might be considered as Britain's best ever female pop singer I found that this television programme offers a good overview as to the lady's talents, as well as providing a mini history by Dusty herself of how she evolved both musically and professionally. The song clips are well chosen and the video and sound quality are by and large very good. The silliness of French and Saunders is somewhat unnecessary however Dusty's handling of it proves that she didn't take herself, (unlike the way that she took her music) too seriously. If I have a criticism of this release then it is confined to the brevity of the show and the lack of any bonus material.

4.0 out of 5 stars Talent alone is never enough!, 13 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There have been several biographies on Dusty Springfield already written, and some are very good, but this latest one by Karen Bartlett is perhaps the best and possibly final word needed in any examination about this amazingly talented and complex woman. Dusty was a deeply troubled lady, be it rooted with her parents and her less than idyllic childhood, her initially confused sexuality, her looks, her Catholicism, or ironically, with her extraordinary talent, which due to her perfectionism, was never quite good enough for her! All aspects of her life; the good, the bad, and the downright ugly are covered honestly within the pages of this book. Her friends and past lovers all appear to talk openly to the author, who sensibly never resorts to the sensational when presenting her honest and three dimensional portrait of Dusty. The singer's often tormented adult life mixed with all too rare moments of real happiness makes at times for very sad reading, but at least she appeared to have found a comparative peace during her final one or two years. If I had a very minor criticism about this book it would have to do with some of the poor proof-reading, but luckily nothing too serious!

5.0 out of 5 stars Crime at its best!, 31 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It was well worth the wait in order to see these films once again. I so well remember seeing these shorts back in the 50s when they invariably accompanied the main attraction. The added impact of these films was that they actually recreated true crime stories. The quality of these transfers to dvd is remarkable, and they look as fresh today as they must have looked when they were first released. Despite today's viewer having an understanding of the many advances which have taken place in police detection since these films were first made does not in any way reduce the enjoyment which they can get as they watch these stories unfold. From the introduction to each film to the actual police investigation and finally to the story's conclusion is as tight and as professionally made as anything of quality that was made in the 1950s. The acting is nicely low key and very convincing. Of course a bonus to film fans is in seeing many well known British actors in the early stages of their careers. Perhaps these films will have limited appeal to a younger techno savvy audience, but to us who saw them in the cinemas when they were first released is, and will be a joy to rediscover.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fury at his best, 7 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Billy Fury recorded these tracks over 50 years ago yet today they still sound as good as when they were first released. With a few exceptions all of these tracks have been previously available, however for those fans who would like to own a single CD covering the majority of Billy's own compositions, then this is the CD for you. In my opinion "The Sound of Fury" remains the best rockabilly album ever recorded by a British artist, and compares favourably when judged against most American rockabilly releases. The entire album is contained within this release plus one or two alternative takes. Billy's follow-up album is also included in its entirity plus examples of his more commercial big hit ballads. Following its remastering the sound quality throughout is excellent. The accompanying booklet contains a treasure trove of Fury memorabilia and I wish the pages were larger in size to fully appreciate the pictures. The liner notes provide good background information on the music plus they contain a mini biography on Billy. Excellent value for money and I heartily recommend this album to both exisiting fans and to newcomers who may be discovering Billy for the first time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Happy Trails, 12 Dec. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
To all those fans of Roy Rogers who would like to own a single cd consisting of all the movie cowboy's best known songs, then this is the cd to own. The sound quality for the most part is excellent. Most of these tracks have been previously available on other complilation discs however this release, issued to coincide with Roy's 100th birthday, is about the best. The liner notes, although not lengthy cover the salient points of the singing cowboy's career. Close your eyes and bring back those memories of your visits to Saturday morning pictures and of listening to Uncle Mac's Children's Favourites. Happy Trails.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dog's Tale, 29 Oct. 2010

"Definitive work" used as a description for a book dealing with historical persons or subjects is often used, but under closer examination is usually proven to be anything but the case. In this books case I'm happy to say it's 100% accurate. This book IS the definitive work on Black Bob! Anyone like myself who has fond and nostalgic memories for Black Bob will not be disappointed when they buy this book. The Author/Publisher's decision to print the book to look like the old Black Bob annuals was a stroke of genius. The layout of the picture stories and also the text stories is virtually identical to the old annuals, and the number of stories contained in this volume should prove more than enough for most fans. The real bonus is of course the narrative history of how Black Bob came into being and of the artists who drew and wrote the stories. The accompaning illustrations and reproductions from the original sources are excellent. The index and listing of all the Black Bob stories is worth having on its own. Identification for the original annuals is also provided giving their year of publication etc.
In a word "Excellent"!

This review is from: The Singles (Audio CD)
If you first heard these tracks in the 60s or 70s and thought they were great at the time, then buy this CD. If you've never heard them before but appreciate great music played by expert musicians you won't be disappointed. These seldom played tracks are for the most part timeless in their appeal. I bought the cd essentially for one track "Incense". I never knew before who the Anglos were, and at the time believed them to be a Black soul band. I loved the single, and today it sounds even better, some 40 years later. The sound quality throughout this CD is excellent and with this number of tracks is truly value for money. Highly recommended
