Terminal Town: An Illustrated Guide to Chicago's Airports, Bus Depots, Train Stations, and Steamship Landings, 1939-Present

Price: £22.50

5.0 out of 5 stars The train now arriving..., 2 Nov. 2014

Another great book from Joseph Schweiterman chronicling the impact of transport infrastructure on urban development. This time the focus is Chicago where the CBD was framed first by an array of railroad terminals and then the famous 'Loop' of the elevated urban transit system.

But, it's not just railways that are covered and the history of how downtown bus terminals slowly migrated out towards the expressways and kerbside parking offers another fascinating insight into how cities and public transport continue to evolve.

Air travel and waterways are also covered, as are important suburban railroad/transit interchanges in Englewood, Gary, Joliet etc., which although not technically terminals play an important role in the story.

Well illustrated with succinct descriptions covering all aspects of the terminals covered, this is a must have for anyone interested in the evolution of the Windy City.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extracts from the Steam World Archive, 16 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Three former Telerail titles from their Steam World Archive Series re-packaged here at a bargain price.

Other reviews detail the content of each DVD, but it is worth noting that Telerail have produced high quality railway documentaries for nearly 30 years. Allowances must be made for the archive nature of the films, but the DVDs are produced to broadcast standard and the content and narration by local radio presenter Peter Fairhead is both entertaining and informative.

If you have an interest in seeing authentic views of British steam in action in the 50s and 60s, this is a good place to start.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cheap but very cheerful, 15 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is not as the title implies a 'History of American Railraods' but appeaqrs to be a collection of several former Green Frog programmes, gathered together and loosely themed around the steam and diesal eras. For the price it offers excellent value for money, with vintage action from Jerry Carson (and Emery Gulash) mixed with some from preserved lines,

There are a couple of issues to note. Firstly, there are no chapter headings within the individual programmes so you will need to fast forward through to you favourite bits. Secondly, the programme on Great Southern Passenger Trains contains far more narrative than the others and ends rather abruptly, which appears to be a result of poor mastering. If you can cope with this, then for the price you get a lot for your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Radzinsky & Co Rock, 14 Dec. 2013
Pulley perform and record intermittently due to the baseball career of lead singer Scott Radzinsky. Once a major league relief pitcher, more lately a bullpen coach, but all the while a performer in the sadly under-rated punk rock outfit Pulley.

This EP keeps up the high quality of their other releases with songs that provide hard edged punk somewhat similar to Bad Religion, but with a hint of New Found Glory thrown in for good measure.

Steel from the Sky: The Jedburgh raiders, France 1944
Steel from the Sky: The Jedburgh raiders, France 1944

5.0 out of 5 stars Behind Enemy Lines, 8 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Steel from the Sky describes the activities of the three man Jedburgh teams, who parachuted into France to link-up with the Maquis, encourage active resistance and provide a link with allied forces in the days immediately after D-Day.

Notable early actions are those associated with delaying the advance of the 2nd SS Panzer Division - Das Reich, as it moved north from Montauban in southern France to reinforce German forces attempting to prevent Allied troops breaking-out from the coastal regions of Normandy. The fact that Das Reich took 15 rather than three days to reach their positions is testimony to the success of these covert operations. Although French citizens in towns and villages along the route(s) followed by Das Reich paid a heavy price, this delay made a major contribution to the overall success of Operation Overlord.

The Jedburgh operations are a prelude to the ill-fated Operation Bulbasket, where SAS troops were also dropped behind enemy lines to the east of Poitiers in the days immediately after D-Day. Again the objective was to cause chaos and confusion behind enemy lines and further delay reinforcements heading towards the Normandy beachheads, especially 2nd SS Panzer Division - Das Reich. Their betrayal is addressed in Roger Frosts accompanying book Fire From The Forest.

Together these two books are invaluable reading for anyone with an interest in covert allied operations in France in 1944.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heroes, Heroines and Double Agents, 1 Dec. 2013
This review is from: Secret War [DVD] (DVD)
Brilliant series, rarely shown on TV, which uses historic footage, first person interviews and reconstructions to reveal the stories behind some of the lesser known operations behind enemy lines.

There's not a lot out there about the SOE on film, so this is a must have for anyone who has an interest in their clandestine operations. Eight episodes feature contributions from official SOE historian M.R.D. Foot CBE who had himself been parachuted into occupied France to work with the French Resistance following D-Day.

Like the other reviewer I too would be disappointed with the four DVD version if it claims to be 'complete'. But the three DVD box clearly states Volume 1 on the cover so hopefully Volume 2, which is to be released in April 2014, will complete the set. Of the 13 episodes in the series, six are included on the three disc release. These are:

Disc 1: Episode 11. The Special Interrogation Group & Episode 12. Hardy Amies - Operation Ratweek

Disc 2: Episode 13. The Mafia Connection & Episode 10. Double Agent Triycle

Disc 3: Episode 09. The Banker, The Norwegian And The Bomb & Episode 04. The Scholar And The Fight For Greece

Highly recommended.

Former Then Jerico front man Mark Shaw's debut album was highly anticipated at the time of its release, but sank without a trace, which was unfortunate.

Perhaps the teen idol persona that Shaw courted cost him a few fans, or maybe the choice of Love So Bright as the debut single, as opposed to the rousing opener Under Your Spell, was a mistake. We'll never truly know.

It's not perfect or full of singles, but is an album that any fan of Then Jerico should check out, if they can find it at a reasonable price, or it gets a deserved re-release.

Postscript: Long after EMI had given up on wringing a few hits out of charismatic Shaw, some of the better tracks off the album, including The One That Got Away and Happy Families, re-emerged on Alive & Exposed a live CD released by Murder Records, which also included old favourites from Then Jerico.

3.0 out of 5 stars Boomtown or Strange Town, 15 Sept. 2013
It's a greatest hits package so all the songs you expect are here and for that reason it can't have a low score.

That said, The Best of the Boomtown Rats (2005) compiled on the back of an internet poll of fans offers a better glimpse at some of the gems from the groups albums (Neon Heart and I Can Make It (if You Can)) and the best of their later work (Dave and Drag Me Down). On that basis it offers a better introduction to the casual fan.

As ever, there's always a personal favourite missing from these things (Kicks and Talking in Code anyone?), but hey that's for more dedicated fans and a reason to dip into the groups back catalogue, and in particular their first three albums.

Not the original Then Jerico line-up, but an excellent performance from The Clapham Grand in 1992, featuring past hits, the best songs off Mark Shaw's debut album Almost and some tracks you're unlikely to hear anywhere else.

To be brutally honest the mastering could have been better, as some of the edits between songs will remind you of a home made mix tape from the 80s. But, that one gripe aside this CD contains great versions of some well known and some very rare songs. If you've taken the time to read this far this is surely a CD you either own or need to add to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars NFL Films at their best, 3 Aug. 2013

This is a superbly presented show that any American Football fan in the UK should own, if they have access to a region free DVD or Blu Ray player. It contains 4 DVDs and a beautiful full-colour book, in a sleeve styled on a hard back book/gridiron field. [N.B. Don't look at the full-colour book until you've watched the main feature, unless you want to know the outcome].

Unsurprisingly, the main feature counts down the 100 greatest players in descending order, illustrating their career with excellent archive film footage and commentary from fellow players, coaches, sports journalists, historians and celebrity fans. Herein lies the only real problem with the show. Whilst some of the celebrity presenters such as Michael MacCambridge (author of "America's Game") are obviously knowledgeable about the game and its history, providing a compelling story for 'their' players inclusion in the list, others are less knowledgeable and convincing.

The choice of players and their placement in 'The List' will inevitably lead to widespread debate, but that's part of the fun. In particular, the inclusion of players that are still playing may cause some consternation, particularly as as some recent greats of the 'UK NFL Era' (i.e 1982-date) have not made the cut.

Whatever your views, this collection will provide great memories of the NFL at its peak.
