Probably of most interest to those who were fans of, and recall with affection, Jimmy Clitheroe's radio programmes which ran for several years. These sit-coms are a bit ropey in terms of the quality of the scripts and general production values. but they do allow the viewer to get a look at the man who previously, may have only been a disembodied voice. Jimmy was not a bad actor, as his appearence playing a 14 year old boy in one of the lesser known George Formby films testifies. But he would have been better served with more imaginative scripts and tighter direction.

5.0 out of 5 stars A penny well spent!, 23 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have to admit that I have only just begun reading this book. But I give it five stars because a hardback volume, in excellent condition and only costing one penny (plus postage) has got to be a terrific bargain.

A good buy and escellent service. I hope the substance lives up to expectation!.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good reliable working piece of equipment, 23 Aug. 2014

A good reliable working piece of equipment. Not as attractive a sound as some of the wooden ones available, but they are several times more expensive. Good value for money.

Music in the Castle of Heaven: A Portrait of Johann Sebastian Bach
Music in the Castle of Heaven: A Portrait of Johann Sebastian Bach

3.0 out of 5 stars probably the best part of it, 23 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not quite sure what the intended market is. The book has some interesting facts about Bach's early life, probably the best part of it. The chapters on the cantatas tend to be very subjective and, to understand some of them fully, access to scores would be required which immediately limits the readership. So an extended review would be mixed, some good and some not so good sections. One cannot fault Gardiner from one point of view however; he knows all the works he discusses minutely more than most people on the planet, having conducted performances of them all, often several times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great songs, 23 May 2014

Many of his best known songs are not on this CD but the compensation is that there are many excellent lesser known ones a number of which were unknown to me. An enchanting songsmith, one of the best from the C20.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia, 23 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Great moments of nostalgia of the Ealing days with some films much superior in quality than others. But they show the range of work the studio was producing at the time and give a good clue as to the audiences they were aiming at. Very interesting to watch though i guess most would only view the films once.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as expected, 23 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This box came less than 24 hours after the order was placed; five stars for that. HOWEVER it was not what I expected. One often has to look at the reviews to see what films are included in these compilations because they are not always clear from the ads. In this case a reviewer listed 6 films which included Dodge City and Dive bomber with four others. My set included 4 not the 6 films I expected with the above two omitted. Now my beef is, If Amazon alters the number of films in a box set, it should NOT include the reviews of the previous set as this is most misleading for the potential purchaser. I am disappointed with this --after many purchases over the years this is the first time I have felt really let down by Amazon. Sloppy and misleading, almosr verging on the dishonest!.

3.0 out of 5 stars a late Ealing film, 10 Jan. 2014

This review is from: Bitter Springs [DVD] (DVD)
Something of an oddity, this film was made in 1949 near Quorn South Australia not far from where I was born and went to school. It was mainly for nostalgic purposes that I bought it. However, for fans of Chips Rafferty. the young Gordon Jackson or the (rather miscast( Tommy Trinder, it would have special appeal. However it is not in the same class as The Ladykillers or a number of other post-war Ealing productions.

It begins very well showing the hardships of the early settlers but latterly it loses its way, partly due to scripting reason and partly because the presentation of the conflicts between the white settlers and the aborigines is confused. But it does have the benefit of a film score by Ralph Vaughn Williams.

Something of a hotchpotch but still an interesting example of early Australian film making shining a light upon its settlement history. Whether you like it or not may well depend upon your particular interests.
