2.0 out of 5 stars Great band but not so great book, 12 Aug 2014

Disappointing.. Light on detail, too many errors.. Lacking insight into the actual music ... If you want to read a decent book on this great band search out the Martin Popoff book..

I think it prudent to wait a week or so before posting any review of an album given that first/second listens can often produce overly enthusiastic or hyper critical comments. So, over seven days since i first heard the album, here goes..

A fine addition to the Magnum catalogue.. with standout rockers "Live til You Die" (Do I hear a familiar NWOBHM riff?!) and "Too Many Clowns"- a number of "slow, quick, quick ,quick slow" tracks including the superb "The Art of Compromise" - and ballads including the immense "The Valley of Tears". And the bonus DVD contains a cracking live version of Storytellers Night.

Wonderful stuff! Easily the best melodic rock release of the year so far for me which sits as a fine companion piece to the previous "13th Day" release of 2012..

In contrast to other (negative) reviewers I am happy with this CD release - I would rather listen to a band obviously on form (Blackmore close to,if not at,his best), playing a great set list, albeit with less than pristine sound (it's not that bad!) than have a sterile, remixed, cut/paste contractual obligation such as Purples Nobodys Perfect.

I'm just grateful that this performance is in the (legal) public domain at last.. .

One warning however - Whilst the DVD version is good, beware the strobe effects early in the set(Spotlight Kid in particular)- unwatchable in places!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great first, second and third, impression, 24 Sep 2012

Great album- Seems to be a more uptempo effort than recent releases. And with a bonus cd featuring the undiscovered classic "Eyes Like Fire" too. Bargain!

Favourite songs on here? "So Let It Rain" and "Didn't Like You Anyway".

A minor quibble..i'm not sure about the running order.

My favourite Magnum albums? Chase the Dragon, Storytellers Night and Princess Alice.

Finally, Roll on the UK tour!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great songs, great sounds!, 1 Oct 2009

I have lived with this album for over two weeks..& listened to it many times. i suppose it is a big step on from the album that many muse fans expected to hear - but i love it and its diversity.
Each song is a candidate for an epic "Muse over" in the live setting too.
I suspect that like Rush - who developed, experimented, and matured with each album- Muse will encounter fans who take a change in approach as a personal insult..but who really wants to hear the same songs re-written album after album?
Favourite songs? MK Ultra and Exogensis.
Favourite other Muse album? Origin of Symmetry

5.0 out of 5 stars A four and a half star review - I like it!, 28 Jan 2009
Great songs - for me the closest album to Bruces 1980 album The River in terms of "light & shade"..the mix of styles and mood. We get pop songs, a sense of humour, sadness and an interesting DVD too. It does reward repeating listening.. do not dismiss after first listen -it is a grower.

Highlights - Outlaw Pete and What Love Can Do

(my only) Lowlight - I do have a reservation about the "sound"- as with Magic. The mix/mastering is very harsh to my ears..

Finally, the packaging on the deluxe version is fine - and I like the cover too!!

Best album of 2006. The best elements of 70's, 80's, 90's and 00's music, with a twist.. by the best live band in the world.

Best songs? Starlight and Map of the Problematique.

Bring on Wembley Stadium!!

This album has the feel of 'Walk on Water'(a true UFO 'classic')-with strong tunes, an excellent sound, and Phil Mogg in prime form(almost Springsteen-esque lyrics at times).
Stand out cuts? - Mr Freeze, When Daylight Comes to Town and Sympathy.
To sum up, better than the recent Sharks and Covenant albums, and close to the underated, undiscovered masterpiece that was the Sign of 4 album.
One point on the cover, anyone else notice the close similarity to Muse-Absolution ?!
