The Corn is Green (El Trigo Esta Verde) Spanish import, plays in English
Dvd ~ Katharine Hepburn

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong drama, 1 Sep 2014
This is a good quality adaptation of a semi-autobiographical play. The cast is excellent, and the story moves at a good pace. It's warm, humorous and compelling; recommended family drama.

The Politician's Wife [DVD]
The Politician's Wife [DVD]
Dvd ~ Juliet Stevenson

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, 18 Jun 2013
This review is from: The Politician's Wife [DVD] (DVD)
I had high expectations due to the quality of the cast, and I was not disappointed. The story of the cuckholded wife for whom no one, not even her own father, seems to have genuine sympathy is compelling, authentic and intricate. It seems that they underestimated her at their peril...

4.0 out of 5 stars Retro, 25 Nov 2012
Retro and nostalgic, these episodes are needless to say very dated, but if you like the genre (or fancy a trip back to the 1970s) you'll like this set. Most of the regular CA actors are featured.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, 21 Nov 2012
Compelling, in-depth, atmospheric, intelligent, scrupulously researched. Recommended viewing!

The set also includes an old radio recording of A Christmas Carol.

Dvd ~ Jason Alexander

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Christmas films, 20 Nov 2012
"Christmas films" have a tendency to descend into schmalz. This is a notable exception. Based on a true story, it is well-cast, poignant, and interesting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Competent, 18 Nov 2012
Concise, compelling drama performed by a stellar cast. A creepy Victorian atmosphere pervades, and the viewer is left in doubt as to the identity of the murderer until the final scene.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful drama, 11 Sep 2012
This is a scrupulous and substantial dramatisation of the early adult life of Miss Anne Lister, a Regency heiress in search of a "wife". Her diaries revealed a passionate and complex woman - snobbish, tenacious, arrogant, ruthless, clever, charismatic, entrepreneurial - and the film does a highly competent job of reflecting these facets of her personality. This is not the story of a swooning Austinesque heroine!

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 2 Sep 2012
This review is from: The Saint Zita Society (Hardcover)
Given that it's Rendell, one of the UK's best living novelists, I suppose that I can just about accept the rather far-fetched premise of the book, namely a group of disparate people forming a club on the basis of the proximity of their workplaces and their socio-economic statuses. However, I can't come to terms with the poor quality of this novel; trite, boring, lacking in pace, reliant on stereotypes, unrealistic dialogue, too many characters (I lost track of who was who, and frankly, by page 40 I had stopped caring). It's depressing, because I'm a RR fan. What on earth has happened?

The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler ( Miss Irena's Children ) ( The Irena Sendler Story )
The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler ( Miss Irena's Children ) ( The Irena Sendler Story )
Dvd ~ Paul Freeman
Offered by megamoviestore
Price: £7.49

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 27 Aug 2012
A compelling, pacey, suspenseful dramatisation of a true story. Impeccably cast, authentic sets and dialogue. I hadn't heard of Sendler before watching this, but hers is a name I will likely never forget. What bravery!

The film was enhanced by the appearance of the real Irena at the end, aged 95 and still articulate and sharp.

The Victorian Governess
The Victorian Governess

3.0 out of 5 stars The Victorian Governess, 27 Aug 2012
This is a scrupulously researched, scholarly analysis of the Victorian governess. The prose is flowing, clear and unpretentious and the sources are authentic. However, certain points are repeated/reinforced again and again, which gives the impression that the thesis was bulked out to make a book when in fact, this rather narrow topic can't really carry a whole book in its own right. I'd recommend it to novelists, screenwriters, playwrights etc who want to write a Victorian governess into a piece of work, but otherwise it has pretty limited/niche appeal.
