4.0 out of 5 stars Quick, easy build fun kit, 20 July 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
My son is six and a half and something of a Lego fan, so I assigned him the task of reviewing this one. His feedback is that it is very easy to put together and took about five minutes. He likes the colourful design and the accessories - web and rope. The two mini figures, Spiderman and Were-venom, are a nice addition to his growing mini figure collection. The instructions were easy to follow. Given a choice, at his age he'd prefer a regular Lego kit to this, but it is rated age 4.-7 and there's no doubt younger builders would enjoy it a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars A titan among staplers, 20 July 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Great stapler that's built for the Russian front. Nice ergonomic design and a feeling of solid reliability. It'll get through 20-50 sheets at a time, depending on thickness. Ideal for regular stapler users who want something that'll last.

4.0 out of 5 stars Large, well padded bag for all your kit, 26 May 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a great bag, packed with compartments and pockets and very well padded. There's plenty of room for everything and you could accommodate a long lens pretty well if you needed to.

I've trialled this bag with both the double-strap and the sling strap. On a long distance country walk the double-strap proved the most comfortable of the two methods, carrying a Canon body and 3 lenses, plus various other smaller bits and pieces. There is also room for a bottle of water, if you haven't filled every pocket with other stuff. The sling provides more scope to quickly access your camera should you want that kind of flexibility. I tend to carry it around my neck anyway if I'm in shooting mode.

I also did a long walk in the rain and used the waterproof cover which fastens easily and does the job.

I'd say the bag isn't exactly small - it is tricky to store as it doesn't fold down, though if you have a lot of space that won't be an issue. It also seems rather big if you're on an urban assignment e.g. shooting architecture in the local town. On the flipside, its size and the depth of its padding is perfect for cushioning your precious gear. Having almost broken a pricey lens that was inside a less padded bag that fell off a door hook I certainly value a thick layer of padding these days.

All in all, pretty good. Worth considering if you want a generally practical, spacious bag suitable for outdoor use.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pros and cons, 23 May 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The concept here - pans with detachable handles - is a great one. If, like me, you have a cupboard where the saucepans live and they're constantly ending up in a tangle of handles and lids, this is a potential solution. On initial receipt, they look good. The finish on the pans is the usual high Tefal standard and the lids have an excellent hinging handle that folds completely flat, allowing you to stack the lids properly. There are two sturdy-feeling clip on handles. There are some useful clip on plastic lids for some of the pans, if you want to use them for storage. And the whole lot is no wider than the largest frying pan and easily fits in the cupboard, all stacked up and tidy.

Then you read the instructions. There are various warnings. The handles can't be left on the pan too long whilst you cook or they may overheat and change shape enough to ruin the three-button clamp mechanism. The handles also can't go in the dishwasher as the mechanism won't like that either. It also says that the handles can wear out over time and may need to be replaced. I suspect they're covering themselves here but it is something to be aware of.

Then you try cooking and, actually, it isn't all that bad. The pans work well and are nice useable sizes. They ring like a bell if you knock the side with your wooden spoon, which is a little annoying but not insurmountable. The handles attach in a slightly clunky manner and you have to be careful as, like my wife did, it is easy to trap the skin of your fingers in the lower button mechanism as it snaps shut.

The pans wash well in the dishwasher and the handles can be scrubbed in the sink and left to drain. Eventually we evolved a system of cooking. Quite simply, you don't attach the handles until you really have to. So leave them off whilst cooking and only when you need to lift the pan or pour the contents out do you clip on the handle, and then remove it as soon as you're finished. This means they don't overheat and they don't get particularly dirty.

It remains to be seen how well they wear and how well the handles stand up to daily usage over a few years. Generally speaking though these work well and the idea is a good one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Does the job it is intended for, 24 April 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
My wife tried this one out and reported back as follows. It is quite a thick cream compared to other of similar purpose, but it is easy to apply and absorbs well. She applied as instructed, just before bedtime, and her feet felt software next morning. However, she didn't feel that they felt any softer than they might have done if she'd used another moisturiser e.g. E45.

They're wet and they wipe, of course. The main benefit here is the handy sized packs which are about half that of the more standard supermarket size. Ideal for putting in a bag or keeping in the car in case you need them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Straight nursery rhymes, no messing around, 16 July 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
There's not much that needs saying about this. The various nursery rhymes are delivered pleasantly with a reasonable degree of sophistication in the musical arrangements, and with a couple of decent singers. This isn't one of those kids' CDs that tries to be 'cool'. The tunes are the accepted and traditional ones, and the most radical it gets is to sometimes add an instrumental section mid-song and then repeat the first (often, the only) verse. The singers sing them straight with no fancy stuff or annoying ad libs. Only small negative is that there are a few popular and obvious favourites that aren't on here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but what do you use it for?, 8 May 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is what it says on the cover. No music, just noises of various kinds, some lasting a few seconds, some going on slightly longer. As such, I don't think you'd listen to it end-to-end very often, but I can see it being useful in a variety of ways. If you want a sci-fi sounding ringtone, here's your source. If you're putting on a play and need a certain special sound, it may be here. The sounds come from Doctor Who, Blake's 7, Hitchhiker's Guide and Earthsearch (which I must admit I hadn't heard of). And they're not necessarily the obvious sounds. There's no TARDIS landing here (although you do get the Master's TARDIS noise, which is similar but a little more inherently evil.)

Dan Stevens is making the most of his Downton Abbey success. His dulcet tones are perfect here and he also proves himself adept at a variety of voices. The story itself is, of course, a classic. The voice recording is very well balanced and a pleasure to listen to.

The Highway Rat
The Highway Rat
by Julia Donaldson
Edition: Paperback
Price: £2.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Usual high-quality Donaldson/Scheffler effort, 16 April 2013
This review is from: The Highway Rat (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
If you're familiar with Julia Donaldson's works and Axel Scheffler's drawings you will guess that this is another high-standard release. There is another amusing story written in rhyme. I must confess I hadn't spotted the link to the Noyes poem until I read a few other reviews, and then the penny dropped. In that sense, not entirely original but still a worthy addition to her output. Better than Charlie Cook's Favourite Book but not quite up there with favourites like Snail And The Whale or Tabby McTat. You sense she's holding back Gruffalo 3 for a lean spell!
