5.0 out of 5 stars If ye be strategic, rewarded you shall be - if ye be careless, punished you shall be., 3 Feb. 2015

This game is awesome. Breathtaking cutscenes. Interesting story. Lovable characters. Awesome gameplay.
This is strategy-RPG at its finest. Moving your characters across a grid turn-by-turn to kill enemies using positioning and weapons for strategy. This game will reward the strategic, and punish the careless. One very wrong move, and a weak character such as a healer or a mage will die, come the enemy's turn. However, position them well, and utilize the rock-paper-scissor mechanic of swords, axes and spears, and your victory is all but assured to have no casualties. New to the series is the casual mode, which will disable the perma-death of fallen characters that the series is otherwise known for, causing fallen characters to simply withdraw and reappear in the next battles to come, rather than die, never to reappear again.
This is a fine addition to any 3DS owners game library, and is sure to please, granted that you keep positioning and weapon types in mind during stages - this IS, afterall, a strategy-RPG.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3DS Port < PS2 Import, 3 Feb. 2015

Very good game. I would recommend this game to any JRPG fan. A must-play for fans of the Tales Of series.
But in all honesty, I was disappointed with the graphical quality of this port, having originally played the American PS2 original by import. This is of course due to the small screen not being able to fit everything of the original in it (I played it on the 3DS XL, and I shudder to think of the graphical quality on the original "smaller" 3DS model), causing a lot of jagginess and faces being reduced to empty skin-coloured heads with hair if the in-game camera is too far away. Also, the 3D effect is horrendous; no matter how I position my screen, duplicates of in-game people and objects appear beside the actual in-game model. I sincerely hope that the recently released redesign "New 3DS" remedies this issue with its rumored wider 3D sweet spot. So with these things in mind, I'd say that if you want the best Tales Of the Abyss experience, get a modded PS2 (allowing bypass of region locking) and import the American PS2 original - it really is that much better, apart from longer loading times.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome combat, enthralling story, beautiful scenery, but sometimes frustrating between battles., 17 April 2014

The game is absolutely beautiful, the story grips you, and the combat will keep you on your toes at all times as you unleash awesome combos. Though I have some gripes with the game. Sometimes you have no indication as to how to progress while platforming, in spite of white blue markers indicating points that you can hold on to. Sometimes puzzles contain new mechanics that have not yet been introduced or explained - although you can unlock a hint at the cost of the XP reward you would have otherwise gained for solving the puzzle. And once I encountered a bug that was gamebreaking for me until I found the solution online. I've lost count of how many times I had to look up online where to go next or what to do next in order to progress.

Pros: Awesome and hectic, yet fair, combat. Great story. Breathtaking scenery and graphics. Interesting puzzles.
Cons: Lack of direction sometimes - be prepared to use walkthroughs just to beat the game. Near game breaking bug years after its release.

I'd recommend this to anyone who loves beat-'em-ups, vampires and werewolves, and, of course, fans of the original Castlevania series - it's not -that- different from the originals.

The GBA SP excels not only because of its technical capabilities and awesome design, but perhaps more importantly due to its vast game library; there is a ton of good games for tha GBA. Final Fantasy, Pokémon, Castlevania, you name it. Also: The battery life on this thing ROCKS!

4.0 out of 5 stars Remade NES-hard classic with an added bonus, 27 April 2013

If you seek a challenge, this remade old-school Castlevania game is for you. In my opinion, this is a very good remake. Also, this game contains fan-favourite Castlevania Symphony of the Night...portable! I bought this game primarily for this SotN port, and it met my every expectation. The main game is pretty good, but very, very hard, in my opinion - but that's just part of its charm: You're gonna have to go through the levels and bosses several times before you get the strategy straight.

This game is the epitome of fun. The story and characters are a hoot, and the battle system is fast and ever-so-satisfying. I would recommend this to any JRPG-loving PS3-owner out there, who also happens to be very, very into the video game industry.
