The Contender [DVD] [2001]
The Contender [DVD] [2001]
Dvd ~ Joan Allen

4.0 out of 5 stars A good political film with Gary Oldman at his most devious., 12 Jan 2008
This review is from: The Contender [DVD] [2001] (DVD)
I hate starting this with the weakest links but to me the part of Jeff Bridges was by far too nice as "Mr.President" and really Joan Allen was a bit too wishy/washy as the incumbent Vice-President,Senator Laine Hanson.I think it called for the Presidents character to be much harder to mirror the real life Presidents I can remember from JFK onwards, to mirror the person necessary to withstand the pressures of the number 1 job. All Bridges did through this film was test out the White House chef and culinary staff. Again Allen was a bit too weak and I think perhaps her part could have been beefed up a little.Gary Oldman is excellent as Shelly Runyon, digging the dirt on Hanson whilst trying to get "his man" in (played against type brilliantly by William Petersen of CSI)until a surprise befalls them both at the last hurdle? Good support from Christian Slater, Sam Elliot and Philip Baker Hall with reminiscences of Chapaquiddick thrown in for those with a good memory.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nothing to write home about?, 10 Jan 2008
Some parts of this film were really excellent and other parts were so bad, so amateurish that it really was difficult to believe that they were one and the same DVD.The bunks in the blocks were so pristine clean and the prisoners were so clean themselves they looked as if they could appear in a washing powder or soap advert on TV. The fact that in reality EVERYONE had lice, bedbugs, and all manner of infestations in the actual living quarters as well as themselves and were ALL suffering from SEVERE MALNUTRTION,dysentry, typhoid etc was in no way evident in any of the scenes in this film, in fact the inhabitants of THIS Auschwitz looked more like they were AT Butlins?
There was good acting I thought from Mira Sorvino and her compatriot especially when the remainder of the internees were being shot as they were being questioned re the whereabouts of the gunpowder and their final sacrifice was very moving.David Arquette was value for money but I think Harvey Keitel should call it a day on this performance and my acting honours would go to young Kamelia Grigorova, the girl found to have survived the gas chamber.Too much was left to imagination for the viewer, it would have been better to have seen the panic of the people in the showers along with their screams,to have seen how or with what implement Sorvino was being tortured when being interrogated. These things let the film down.

4.0 out of 5 stars This film keeps you on the edge of your seat from the start........, 10 Jan 2008
to the final scene.A very well cast movie with Michael Douglas playing a top psychiatrist Dr.Nathan Conrad, Famke Janssen his wife ,a precocious child actress, Sean Bean being a particularly nasty robber and Brittany Murphy as a teen diagnosed as suffering from PTSD and locked within herself.Basically Bean and his team recently released from prison kidnap Douglas' daughter using her as the pawn in the game they draw Douglas into where they want him to use his skills to obtain a number from Murphys memory given to her when she was a child by her father who was originally a member of Beans robbery team who double-crossed them.He has to do this to get his child back. You may think you've been here before but this is a well directed film by Gary Fleder and produced by veterans the Kopelsons. The extras are interesting in themselves.I never believe in saying too much unlike some reviewers who write 50 plus line reviews, giving away all the films secrets.

1.0 out of 5 stars A mish-mash story from start to finish., 7 Jan 2008
This review is from: The Veteran [2006] [DVD] (DVD)
The description on the reverse of the DVD cover with reference to Michael Ironside and the character "Ray" is wrong as he plays "Doc" in the film. The first mistake and this doesn't help. There are similar unhelpful errors which "throw" you in following who's who, not that it really much matters because I personally don't agree with the DVD cover description anyway when it describes the film as containing "truly breathtaking action sequences a superbly gritty war film that pulls no punches".At a guess at least 60%-70% of the film takes place in a hotel room, no action there, all action is par for the course, nothing particularly riveting. The last couple of films I've seen Ally Sheedy in have been real Prize Turkeys and this is no better. If Sidney Furie directed the Ipcress File, which I think was Michael Cane's first major role perhaps he should think about putting his feet up if this is all he has to offer and Michael Ironside would have done better to have stayed lost in Vietnam!

2.0 out of 5 stars Much too long and some unbelievable pieces., 5 Jan 2008
The DVD cover may advertise this as "the great untold story of the civil war" but most of this you can see coming 10 minutes before it arrives. The story revolves around a group of Union soldiers interned in a Confederate Prison Camp where they have to survive in tents, living open to the elements with no sanitation, water provided from a fetid source so they have to wring rainwater from their clothing. They are constantly under threat from a group known as "Raiders" who attack, rob and murder anyone to enrich themselves.Presumably the group we follow in the film and the ones they befriend do NOT suffer enough through the film from the ill-treatment the "Raiders" dish out to them for them to lose their own humanity for after the full scale riot in the camp and the "Raiders" are captured, they are given a fair legal jury trial?? The acting I thought generally was poor. And I don't think it's necessary to take 43 lines to review this film either.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Hollywood glorifications here just raw beauty and harshness., 4 Jan 2008
This film based on Brian Moores novel depicts the rugged 1500 mile journey undertaken by Jesuit priest Father Laforge(Lothaire Blutheau) in order to convert what are seen as the savage Indian tribes living in the remote interior areas along Canada's St.Lawrence River in the mid 1600's to Christianity and away from worshipping their own gods and images. These tribes are mainly the Huron and Algonquin and a group of Algonquin reluctantly agree to help him complete his journey. One dangerous hazard soon begins to face him and his helpers after another which leads the Indians to question whether what they are doing is angering their Gods,Laforge to question for the first time if he will ever complete his mission.Extremely good acting, especially Sandrine Holt in her first major role.Beautiful scenery

1.0 out of 5 stars More like an worn out Hammer Horror movie!, 27 Dec 2007
This review is from: Phenomena [DVD] [1986] (DVD)
I give this film 1 star only because Jennifer Connelly happens to appear in it, other than that fact I would have tried to have found a way to have given it zero. I cannot believe that some people have found quite so much to say about it and when some reviewers become top fifty reviewers they seem to feel that they have to write scrolls of words most of which are total rubbish and unnecessary. This film has an out of date 60's style plot of killer on the loose near a girls school in the Swiss Alps,a monkey who acts better than most of the so-called "stars", an extremely low budget, and a Director who would be better directing traffic.

1.0 out of 5 stars Such a waste of good talent?, 27 Dec 2007
This review is from: Basic [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
I watched this film twice in the hope of understanding really what the purpose was of actually making it? There are so many holes that can be picked in it from start to finish that I really can't "get it"? Skipping over everything and going directly to where Travolta is called into help Nielsen interrogate the prisoner I assumed it was by the ending to do with the drugs. But I also had to wonder how some guns miraculously had dummy ammo but others not? The ending was just too smart for itself, I can't pretend to say I know what it was/when it was? It was plain daft. Not a single reviewer can say he/she knows what the ending reflects. Amazon may have a policy of NOT criticising other reviewers but if that is the case they in turn SHOULD NOT accept 3 line reviews which say absolutely nothing constructive about the film other than "great film" or similar or 30 line reviews that are full of pompous flowery comparisoms with other films and little about the one in question!

3.0 out of 5 stars I don't believe we've heard the full story from the victim?, 24 Dec 2007
That's why I've only give this film 3 stars.David Morse has given an excellent portrayal as a mountain man know originally only as "Bicycle Pete" residing in the Appalachian Mountains that pass through the state splitting it and New York State in the mid 1960's and who terrorises the folk living there over a period of 2-3 years where he indiscriminately attacks women in the hope of taking one away with him forever, as his love interest and shooting anyone who gets in his way. He had a long criminal record and had served time in an Asylum for the Criminally Insane, doesn't wash very often, has no real teeth to talk about so all in all doesn't have a lot going for him.. He had seen 17 yr old schoolgirl Peggy Sue Bradnick (played by Megan Follows who was actually 23/24 at the time of filming)previously and decided she was the one he was going to take. He lay in wait for her and when she and her siblings were returning from school he took her, threatening the others with his shotgun. From here the pursuit and manhunt began with various deaths occurring on the way and until the very end. David Soul also stars. What doesn't ring true for me about the story is this:If Bicycle Pete has "never had a woman" as he states in the film to Peggy Sue HOW does he manage to control
himself and NOT attack her, what has he got to lose? I think this is the part she didn't tell!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another exceptional series though ..............., 22 Dec 2007
I fear the writing is on the wall for some of those in the BAU. Some viewers may criticise the fact that in this series several "friends" (ordinary members of the public) of BAU members were coming directly to them with problems before going to the Police first. But wouldn't any of us do this? I think so. Generally, each episode appears to have been extremely well thought out and when you have real World reknown ex-FBI Criminal Profilers praising the series and the Producers,Directors,Actors et al for the accuracy of the programme then somethings got to be going right somewhere. When Elle Greenway (Lola Glaudini) left the series I thought the hole was going to be very difficult to fill and then along comes Emily Prentiss played by Paget Brewster. All the characters have been allowed to "expand" in this series and they have become much more personal to us, we find ourselves fighting their corners much more defensively. When "Hotch" was being held to count at the end of series 2 by the Psychologist he brilliantly turned the tables on her by doing a profile on her there and then that struck a nerve. I hope if any of these actors are despatched it's due to other projects they have lined up and NOT for any shortcomings of the Production Team? My only criticism is that when I get the DVD I promise myself I will watch a few here and there to make them last but once I start it's a bit like a drug.
