1.0 out of 5 stars This film could have given so much more!, 26 Jan. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
OK,I have to say that I haven't seen Hostel yet but if it's as boring as this then it will end up in the same bin. It's really come to something when you cannot believe ANYTHING that is written on the DVD cover.Personally I didn't think any of the SAW series of films have been scary and all the nonsense about "trips to dark, unforgiving places" is pure hyperbole! I know that sometimes "less is more" but why the producer in this film did not think to make use of the prosthetics department on at least one occasion I don't know,it needed something?

3.0 out of 5 stars Good entertainment value!, 24 Jan. 2008
OK so you've seen this story a few times before but at least you know that with Rutger Hauer you're going to get value for money and pure entertainment.Nick Randall (Hauer)a seasoned bounty hunter with a home arsenal catches the scum of the earth to build up his bank balance and is doing fine until the CIA use him unknowingly as bait for one of the worlds most notorious terrorists,Malak Al Rahim played menacingly by Gene Simmons.Unfortunately Nicks girlfriend and closest male friend are killed in an explosion on a boat which was meant to kill him and this makes the hunt for Rahim vey personal. He is assisted by Robert Guillame whereas everyone else appears to block his path.Well worth a view.

4.0 out of 5 stars A brutally honest film - exceptional all round., 24 Jan. 2008
This review is from: Karla [DVD] (DVD)
If like some "Top ? Reviewers" I take 50 or more lines to tell you everything that happens in the film, why buy it?? Suffice to say, Paul Bernado played by Misha Collins and Karla his wife played by Laura Prepon are the 2 leads in this true story set in Canada. Bernado is an extremely violent, womaniser who has mood swings and beats his wife relentlessly, added to this he is obsessed with sex.She in turn is obsessed with him, puts up with the treatment he dishes out, follows his every command and initially she covers up his crimes when he admits carrying out rapes then willingly assists him as an accomplice rather than "turn him in or lose or leave him" as a normal person would and they turn to Kidnap,Rape and Murder. In the end arrest is unavoidable and their trial follows.............

The Strange Death of David Kelly
The Strange Death of David Kelly

Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars An axis of evil permeated No.10 Downing Street ..............., 24 Jan. 2008
of that we can be certain. This is a most brilliant book by Norman Baker who has the courage to name names and clearly point you in the right direction while NOT forcing HIS opinions on you. When David Kelly appeared on the scene, a man who was someone few in the Labour camp would recognise because he was honest, straight-forward and was world-reknown at his profession no-one in that Magic Circle of Blairs was ever going to let him stand in their way of invading Iraq alongside Bush. Exactly who this "axis" consisted of at any given time is another question with so many players willing to participate? Campbell was the Devil incarnate and if one was to trace his record back to childhood I am absolutely positive you would find he has always been a bully and a coward.Scarlett like so many others was only too willing to be at Blairs beck and call, totally incompetent at one job he was promoted into MI6.Hoon,arrogant and aloof to the end he saw the death of Kelly as little more than an "inconvenience".Blair took the UK to war, an unjustified war, having ensured the "evidence" and "facts" were in place to show what he wanted them to show to the British public and having ensured that Campbell had briefed the Labour Press "correctly" beforehand so they would be on board. The final insult to David Kelly was the whitewash given to the Government in the Hutton report by the so-called eminent judge put there for that very purpose.

3.0 out of 5 stars A well made little tale., 20 Jan. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Barber [DVD] (DVD)
Set in the Far North of Alaska in the 24 hour darkness of the winter which is an all-important thread to this story in a small town of some 250 or so inhabitants which are reducing in number all the time as the serial killer is on the prowl.Malcolm McDowell plays Dexter Mills the towns barber to whom all the menfolk tell their problems and all the latest gossip. The sheriff and his deputies are basically incompetent with this type of crime and the volume and it's not too long before the FBI come on the scene. But the murders continue and so do the ironies but to say more would spoil the story. Well worth a look.

1.0 out of 5 stars Low budget and it shows., 19 Jan. 2008
OK, before you buy this DVD you know it's a low-budget independently made film and so there's no problem with that, after all there's one or two "made-men" in it in the form of Frank Vincent (Goodfellas & Casino) and Dominic Chianese (The Sopranos)to start off with and the storyline's about drugs, money and guns so there's bound to be plenty of action and stuff. But really it's all very low key with Frank Vincents character Sal keeping a relatively low profile, while Michael Rodrick (a relative unknown actor) who has been released from prison after being set-up cries his way through most of the film.He contacts his ex-girlfriend who is now married to his arch-enemy a guy called Vincent (played by Jonathan LaPaglia) and this leads to an unavoidable bloody meeting between them.A bit of double-crossing,non-explicit sex but little else of interest in a routine tale all seen before.

1.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what "genre" is this supposed to be in?, 18 Jan. 2008
I didn't really know because it seemed to have a bit of everything with Gibson playing his paranoid taxi-driver part in this film at times similar to the COMEDIC way he acted in Lethal Weapon.Julia Roberts is normally worth watching but even she seemed overwhelmed by Gibson but I suppose she was just their for the ROMANCE. Patrick Stewart and his team conned the conners too easily and even though it's a film give the viewer some credibility to know that certain checks are run on people.Gibsons paranoia does have a basis we learn but by the time we do so the whole thing has become such a mix of different theories it's a job to remember where we started off.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid this like the Plague!, 17 Jan. 2008
Can Christopher Lambert put life into ANY character he plays? I have to ask this question because of the half dozen or so films I've seen Christopher Lambert in the only one where he seemed to have a significant interest in what was going on was in Resurrection. From reading the DVD cover I expected this to be much more exciting than it was with much more action other than the one real battle at the end.Lot's of drinking and buffooning going on, all very boring. Klaus Maria Brandauer and Max Von Sydow I thought were badly mis-cast, Ines Sastre may be better suited to pole dancing because she can't act.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overseen by Lt.Col. Hal Moore US Army(Ret) himself no less, 15 Jan. 2008
The battle seen in this film takes place in the La Drang Valley, Vietnam known to the North Vietnamese soldiers as the Valley of Death, over a period of only 3 days although on watching it I never realised this at first. The film begins as usual with the formation of the squadron from mainly raw recruits, trained up by Sam Elliot, who plays an RSM answerable only to Lt.Col Moore played by Mel Gibson who states from day one he will lead from the front with Elliot, a battle-hardened sergeant of many campaigns. Before the men finish their training properly they are sent off to Vietnam but not before the most experienced third of the squad are taken away,a decision made by those in higher authority who play with other peoples lives. The group are lifted into the battle zone and fight against N.Vietnamese veterans where many lives are lost on both sides. The heartlessness of war is seen clearly when the wives of the fallen American soldiers are informed of their husbands deaths by telegrams from the Secretary of State of the War Office delivered by The Yellow Cab Company. This task is one then undertaken by Madeleine Stowe, playing Gibsons wife. Much good acting from Greg Kinnear,Keri Russell,Don Duong and producer Randall Wallace has done a good all round job. The computer work is excellent and Music by Nick Glennie-Smith,an important often ignored facet is spot on.
