5.0 out of 5 stars THE COW JUMPED OVER THE MOON, 9 May 2009
This review is from: Leg End: ORIGINAL MIX (Audio CD)
"LEG END" 1973 by HENRY COW is a contempory progressive jazz rock album of improvisional excellence. The musicianship is magnificent, "Nirvana for Mice" is a great opener which sounds Canterbury Scene-ish, "Amygdala" and "Extract from: With the Yellow Half-Moon and Blue Star" would give King Crimson a real run for their money, "Teenbeat Introduction" is extremely eclectic which flows into "Teenbeat" a strange and menacing composition, and "Teenbeat Reprise" just rocks, a Trilogy Triumph, "The Tenth Chaffinch" is an odyssey through nature of way-out soundscapes, then we come to the albums finale "Nine Funerals of the Citizen King" what a wonderful way to finish the album at times almost Gentle Giant-esque, but like all the album completly original. "LEG END" by HENRY COW is an album of infinate quality, progessive music at it's peak, an amazing piece of work in which the listener has to open up to, the rewards will out-weigh the patience. "LEG END the LEGEND" never has there been a truer phrase. Brilliant Stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars IN THE DEATH OF MERE HUMANS, LIFE SHALL START, 8 May 2009
This review is from: Still Life (Audio CD)
"STILL LIFE" 1976, was the second of three comeback albums by VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR, sandwiched in between the brilliant GODBLUFF and the defining NEW WORLD RECORD. "STILL LIFE" represents the high water mark of an incredible back catalogue of superior material. Always pushing the boundaries of music in their own immeasurable way, VDGG excelled on an album of sheer beauty, more refined than previously ( PETER HAMILL sounds more restrained and Gothic than usual ) giving "STILL LIFE" a real quality and classy feel. Even the striking album cover of an actual Van Der Graaf Generator machine discharching on an acrylic background says everything about the album, the energy, the power, the colours, the textures the superlatives abound. "STILL LIFE" is my personal favourite VDGG album, a superior release of untouchable soundscapes and musicianship, which surely made a mockery of the banal music press who had the audacity to lambast this remarkable piece of original and refreshing piece of work. A must buy CD of major mid-70's Prog Rock.

5.0 out of 5 stars MASTERS FALL AND WONDER, PEOPLE RISE AND WAIT., 6 May 2009
This review is from: 6 6 6 (Audio CD)
Based on THE REVELATION OF ST JOHN, "666" by APHRODITE'S CHILD is a substantial concept of intellegent, thought provoking Progressive Rock. Somewhat surprisingly firing them on all cylinders is keyboard wiz Vangelis and Euro warbler Demis Roussos. The album itself is of major importance, influencing alot of groups; Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and Genesis' "The Lamb" are evidence of this fact. The music explores every aspect and emotion from the Beautiful and Good to the Demonic and strange, the 20 minute "All The Seats Were Occupied" is one of the greatest Opus' of all-time, which strangely is a kind of Overture at the end of the album. "666" by APHRODITE'S CHILD is a Completely Original work of Mind-Blowing Progressive Rock, once you've listened to this unforgetable album, it will stay with you for the rest of your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A SLEEPER FOR YEARS, 23 Mar. 2009
Imagine a group which has the best elements of Arthur Brown, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Emerson Lake and Palmer,... the image which forms should be ATOMIC ROOSTER and 1970's "DEATH WALKS BEHIND YOU" is certainly their best album, it's pure and simply a rollicking, experimental heavy progressive album by three virtuoso troubadour's. Keyboardist Vincent Crane passed away not so long ago, but the great man will always live on because of the brilliant music he left behind. "DEATH WALKS BEHIND YOU" by ATOMIC ROOSTER is a superior Progressive Rock classic, by probably the most underated group ever. This album should be at the forefront of any record collection, buy it now for Vince's sake.

5.0 out of 5 stars CONQUERING HEROES, 23 Mar. 2009
This review is from: Space Shanty (Audio CD)
"SPACE SHANTY" by KHAN, is like the great Mongol rulers Golden Horde that swept all before it, certainly one of the best albums of all-time by these conquering heroes. What a wealth of ideas is served up here by some of Progressive Rocks greatest exponants. "SPACE SHANTY" is free wheeling Prog with purpose, an absolute triumph from this Canterbury Scene group, a genuine lost classic of major importance, a must buy CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars SUPER MARIO, 13 Mar. 2009
Was there ever a greater singer than Mario Lanza?, I believe he was certainly the most versatile and best all-rounder ever, and this peerless Christmas album is evidence of this. I've built an eclectic mix of Christmas albums over the years, but nothing apart from "Chris Squires Swiss Choir"(for very different reasons) comes anywhere near to this time-less classic, quite simply no-one has ever sung these traditional songs and carols better than the Great Man, no-one else can/could. If God created a singing voice it would sound just like this. If your looking for the definative Christmas Album then this is it, period. Buy now and dont look back, at this price its an absolute steal.

5.0 out of 5 stars WIND AND WUTHERING HAS ITS OWN SPECIAL WAY, 19 Feb. 2009
The aptly titled "WIND AND WUTHERING" from 1977 is my favourite Post-Gabriel GENESIS album. Although not conceptual there's a real sense of Cold, biting loneliness that seems to link the tracks together somehow, the Foreboding Atmosphere and Spellbinding Soundscapes are simply Astonishing. It's a beautifully balanced album in the similar vein as their greatest ever album "NURSERY CRYME" 1971, there's the long layered and woven opus's, complex instrumentals and engaging ballads. Steve Hackett left after this album because his idea's were being overlooked, but in my opinion he gives some of his most savage and eclectic guitar work, although the album is very much Tony Bank's, apparently it took him a year to compose the staggering "One For The Vine," the eye for detail and perfection is evident and takes this album to another level. "WIND AND WUTHERING" by GENESIS is one of the best albums of all-time and gets better with age, over 30 years on I'm still awestruck by it. Open mouthed and dumb struck it will leave you with goose pimples.

5.0 out of 5 stars SHE - IMMORTAL, 16 Feb. 2009
This review is from: She (Audio CD)
Based on the book by J. Rider Haggard,"SHE" is a Rock Opera by Clive Nolan's side project CAAMORA. Pure and simply "SHE" should be on the West End Stage, it's an incredible piece of work. This seriously has to be heard and seen live. A composer, musician and lyricist as brilliant as Clive Nolan surely has to become Stratospheric after this Substantial Concept. The incredible music just flows effortlessly from one song to the next, sung by Clive Nolan as "LEO," Alan Reed as "HOLLY," the part of "AYESHA" is sung with power and jealous heartache by the superb Agnieszka Swita and "USTANE" by one of the greatest singers of all-time the serene and angelic vocals of Christina Booth. "SHE" by CAAMORA is a Rollicking and Immense interpretation of a classic novel, performed by the Bright Young Things of the Prog Rock Scene. We all can sit back and relax in the knowledge that our wonderful world of Avant-Garde music is held in the safe hands by these Neo Immortal Gods.

5.0 out of 5 stars DANCE WITH THE WARCHILD - HOORAH!, 28 Jan. 2009
This review is from: Warchild (Audio CD)
When other Progressive Rock Giants fell by the wayside and/or changed direction, JETHRO TULL never changed, they continued to release thought provoking conceptual Prog Rock, that's why they're so revered. Their productivity and creativity throughout the 1970's can't be equalled by any artist from any genre. So how on earth do you choose a favourite album from such a rich back catalogue?, you can't, it's like choosing your favourite child, there's so much to love about them all. 1974's WAR CHILD though is much overlooked, in the mainstream, other Tull albums are far better known, this has always been a mystery to me because WARCHILD is right up there with the best of them. Maybe it was overpowered by it's predecessor the bewildering and complex Magnum Opus PASSION PLAY. Nevertheless WAR CHILD is a stand alone work, with the usual concept running through it, a far more easier listen than PASSION PLAY, a more intimate whimsical tale with the usual biting dry humoured lyrics. The CD also has seven bonus tracks on it all worthwhile, the restrictions of vinyl prevented these songs being on the original LP. If your a TULL fan you already own this, if your thinking about buying a TULL album for the first time, then WAR CHILD is the perfect place to start. "WAR CHILD" by JETHRO TULL was another Immense album Outstanding Ability, by Craftsmen of their Art. It certainly is up there with THICK AS A BRICK and SONGS FROM THE WOOD. A must buy CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars "CROQUET ANYONE", 25 Jan. 2009
This review is from: Nursery Cryme (Audio CD)
GENESIS were brilliant in the 1970's, even post-Gabriel they released some great albums up to and including "DUKE." My personal favourite track by GENESIS is "STAGNATION" from the TRESPASS album 1970, but when it comes to albums its always been 1971's "NURSERY CRYME," this timeless classic has that overwhelming feeling to it that sets it apart from their other albums. NURSERY CRYME has everything a Progressive Rock album should have, Originality, Possibility, Creativity and Discovery, from start to finish this beautifully balanced album takes you on a fascinating journey of exhilarating wonder into luxurious landscapes of imaginative fantasy, a truly unforgetable experience. I love this album with a passion, its rarely been of the turntable/CD player for over 35 years. NURSERY CRYME by GENESIS when available a must buy CD, it really is a Superior Work Of Art.
