Well before I start, I'd like to add that this is my VERY first review on Amazon, so please bare with me.
I remember purchasing this brilliant RPG a couple of years back in 2008, I picked it up in an HMV store for such a low price (And this WAS the collector's edition, still sealed too!)
So I headed home after work, and popped it into the PS2, I was actually expecting a half decent game, since when there's a "2" added to the series, a lot of people (Mostly critics, reviewers etc) Would think of it as a bad sign from not being better from the original, but having not played the original Digital Devil Saga before I had purchased this, I had no idea what to expect. And even though there was that doubt in my mind, before I even got into the game play part of it, the Opening scene just somehow captivated me, it suddenly presented a whole new level of nothing I've ever experienced before!
So I went on to get the game started, with a little bit more confidence that this would keep raising the bar with me, and surprise surprise, it did =D! I was absolutely mesmerized by the game play (Since this was my first SMT Game) I just couldn't believe my eyes, the visuals were breath taking, and just totally stunning, I couldn't believe that something like THIS actually existed within RPG's - Truly incredible, indeed. The layout of the battle was easy to get the drift of enough with first timers such as myself, and the menu system was nothing complicated so people such as myself, who truly wanted to enjoy a great game such as this, wouldn't be scratching our heads over it, figuring out left from right and top from bottom, etc. The visuals in game, such as when you would use a Magic attack for example were absolutely amazing too, it gave off an incredible aura that this really was a work of genius.
The story (even though I had no idea of the events that took place before, which would be indefinitely necessary for me to grasp the idea of the story), was still, in it's every right, one word only summed that up for me, and that word was "Epic!" I pieced together the story (a little later after finishing this game) by playing the original and I was gob-smacked at how the story took a huge leap from THIS to THAT. All the characters are loveable, and the antagonists are of course despicable in their own ways, and even with it being the 2nd game, and the fact that I had no idea of what was going on, I still felt that connection of care that you have for the characters in-game, like you feel that bond of wishing safety upon them, and I can tell you, ladies and gentleman, this really did bring tears to my eyes.
Everything from the story planning, the greatly composed soundtrack, visuals, and most definitely the colossal boss battles that took place, have made me a HUGE Shin Megami Tensei fan, so I absolutely recommend this purchase to those that are unsure whether to purchase this. Even if you're not willing to fork out so much for the Collector's Edition (Which, by the way, comes with various in game soundtracks as well as some nice collectable cards and a different cover art from the standard release), the standard edition is just as good ^^.
All in all, for me, this has got to be 5/5 ^^
