5.0 out of 5 stars Cult classic on blu ray, 27 Aug. 2014
This film really is a cult classic.
Cheesy, yes without a doubt, but for some reason other than its Arnie, it really is a great great movie, ripe I dare say for a remake. Having said that look what they did with Robocop from the same period.
The premise:a game show where hardened criminals are allegedly given the chance of a full pardon and freedom if they come through The Running Man tv game show, defeating various challengers and obstacles on the way.
It is of its time and looks very 80, s.I remember seeing Total Recall at the pics and was blown away by the effects, and even now they look dated now, but, do not detract from a great movie.RM falls into this category but is still a pure self indulgent joy of the genre.
Based on a Stephen King story, loosely, you will find this a thrill ride.
This German issue IS uncut and region free.
Audio is dts 2 channel German, and importantly ENGLISH, so is easy to select and bang there it is, the original soundtrack. And although it states 2 channel I was most definitely getting clear rear speaker separation on the effects, cars, guns.
Image is an improvement on the dvd without a doubt, sharp and crisp, eg.on hair, uniforms etc.Well worth the upgrade for my money, having recently seen the movie on hd terrestrial, alas with ads.DOH!!
A must for Arnie fans, a must for genre fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Chronicle worthy of a revisit, 27 Aug. 2014

I remember watching this series when it was first broadcast in 1980 and being totally mesmerised by it.
The show had a very dreamy quality about it and was far removed from the Star Trek, Space 1999 type of tv sci fi that we were used to seeing at that time.
Looking at it today it does look very very dated special effects wise. There were no astronomical budgets of the Game of Thrones type in those halcyon days of 3 channels!!
What carries this series along today is the story, based as it was on the Ray Bradbury classic, which if you haven't read, WHY NOT!!
Im not in the habit of dishing out spoilers in fear that you have 1.never seen the series or 2.never read the book.
All that I will say is that if you like your sci fi that is deep then this is for you.Dont judge this great series on reviews that say the effects are naff and its dated. Before Star Wars was tampered with it too was starting to look of its time, but whereas that is lazers, Lea and a Wookie, this is a more thoughtful and equally enjoyable piece of sci fi.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Quiet Ones, nothing to shout about, 23 Aug. 2014
I so wanted this film to be great because of the Hammer name, but alas its just good/could have been so much better.
It does have some nice creepy moments and is a far more enjoyable horror if you are tired of slashers and gore fests.
However once again for me its the Mexicans that seem to deliver the best horrors at the moment.Go for The Orphanage if you want a genuine scare. As for this, Quiet Ones, well its worth a watch, better than most, but not great. At times I was expecting Derek Acorah or Yvette Fielding to pop up!!!
I really do however prefer English movies of this genre when they are done well. The Awakening is a newish film that succeeds extremely well, but ofcourse my favourites are still Night of the Demon(Tournier) and The Haunting(Wise), both of which are masterclass. The Others and The Sixth Sense too are of the style I like.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ignore the complainers, 20 Aug. 2014
Some have criticised this blu ray release for the chopping off of the top of heads in order to accommodate 16:9 ratio.
Ignore them!! It is literally just the very tops of.
This is an essential purchase on the full aspect of the war from start to finish and trumps any documentary made in the last 40 years. If there was ever a full historically accurate document worthy of passing on to each generation then this is certainly it.A masterclass told well with authority by those that were in it, or involved via Government, and an essential gripping, educational series superbly narrated by Olivier.
As for the hd transfer, well it is certainly better than the dvd or terrestrial transmissions, the black and white images are much improved. The surround mix is also improved and can certainly be heard through the rear speakers.
A nice menu layout with nice easy links to bonus content for each episode and a good bonus disc on the restoration etc.
This is a history lesson unequalled and to gripe about the aspect ratio is to my mind stupid. The younger generation I feel will accept it more readily in this format and as such is worth the minor sacrifice of chopping(cropping).I own the limited edition packaging release which looks like a book, with nice fold out pages holding each disc and an elasticated strap which you can use as a book(disc) marker to keep track of where you are up to.
Simply outstanding!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Breaking out on vinyl, 18 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Ive already left a review of the cd of this album so this comment is for the debut vinyl release.
Stunning, stunning, stunning.
From the opening of Begin Again and How Much Do You Wants accoustic intro it is just like listening to the album for the first time. You are definitely hearing things you simply do not get on cd.Long live vinyl for a superior listening experience. Shove your downloads up your you know what, if you love
music this is the only way. The Reason Im Gone just screams out of the speakers in all its vinyl glory.Surrounded By Eden.....WOW!!!!!
I wiil continue to buy this set even though I already have the next 3 (Jungle, Transition,Prisoner) on vinyl from there original release simply because these are on 180gram.
I will be interested to hearr Face The Music on vinyl as I thought the sound on cd was pretty weak.
Also it would be nice if RUF released the studio albums he recorded for them.
Breaking The Rules was a landmark change as it was his first album where he had full control of the recording of it, and his wife Marie took over the management side of things after the Tellin Stories fiasco. This is a great album, but little did we know what was to come after this, the masterpiece that is Positively Beale Street (just named Walter Trout in the US).

5.0 out of 5 stars Kate, unique!!, 17 Aug. 2014
This review is from: Rocket Man (Vinyl)
2 covers of Elton John songs, wonderfully and uniquely interpreted by Kate.
Rocket Man featured on the Two Rooms tribute album and Candle In the Wind was specifically recorded for this single.
The album for me was a hit and miss affair and by far the best tracks were Border Song by Clapton, Madman Across The Water by Bruce Hornsby and these by Kate.
Uniquely interpreted by Kate and sufficiently different from the originals.
Kate fans should own this and Elton fans who collect covers of his songs will find these to be respectfully done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jazz, blues at its best, 17 Aug. 2014
This review is from: blues groove LP (Vinyl)
This really is a top notch jazzy blues swing album.
The arrangements are just so toe tappingly great.
Blues standards get the Woody treatment and wow will you love it.
Everday I Have The Blues, Smack Dab In The Middle, a funky piano led Pinetop Blues, Call It Stormy Monday.
I could go on and on about this album but that would spoil your treat.
If you love blues with a tint of jazz swing then boy do you need to have this, it is stunning

5.0 out of 5 stars No clues required, 16 Aug. 2014
To my mind these BBC radio plays starring Clive Merrison and Michael Williams are the next best thing to the DEFINATIVE Holmes;Jeremy Brett.Great stories, atmosphere and tension supported by some other inspired casting.
If you love Holmes then these really are for you.A pure joy to the ears.

5.0 out of 5 stars British movie making at its finest., 15 Aug. 2014
Great hi def release of 3 classic Ealing films.
A joy to behold in hd with virtually nil scratches and good contrasts to boot.
Timeless entertainment in its best release visually, yet.
A reasonable amount of extras, but as this vol.1 of more to come presumably, a nice documentary or 2 would have been a nice touch. DEAD OF NIGHT is available on its own and looks fab, and has a nice documentary.
Overall well worth the hd upgrade.
