5.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Wright., 3 Dec 2009
The title "Basic Art Series" is a little misleading,as this excellent series offers much more than just the basics. There are many Wright designs featured here, besides the iconic Falling Water (cover image). The pictures are large and clear, obviously many are recently taken, and these sit well alongside plans and design sketches and early photographs. Text is well researched and easy to follow.

Even without the visuals, listening to this soundtrack brings to mind the heat, dust and atmosphere of the movie. In particular the haunting, operatic opening theme tune, make for a beautiful listening experience. Tracks such as Harmonica, and Jill, play out the tune that was associated with a particular individual in the film.
The recordings although now 40 years old have been transferred cleanly, without any loss of detail. The packaging is a sturdy cardboard cover. My only criticism would be that some liner notes and interviews or additional information would have been nice. Otherwise, evocative listening.

Dieux Du Stade
Dieux Du Stade

5.0 out of 5 stars French beauty at its best., 3 Dec 2009
This review is from: Dieux Du Stade (Hardcover)
This book, like the DVD and the calendar, shows why French men are known around the world as a good-looking lot. This is a behind the scenes look at the 2004 Dieux Du Stade (Gods of the stadium) calendar photo shoot. These are sportsmen photographed in the nude (or in the near-nude) in their locker rooms, showers, and in the surrounds of the stadium. The fact that they are real sportsmen and not only models, adds to the sense of authenticity. Highlights include the gorgeous Frederic Deltour, who has a face and a physique that deserve to be immortalized. He is stunning. Deltour is one of the few men to appear fully naked in this book. For the most part, careful camera angles or a carefully placed hand protect the modesty of the men. This somehow does not spoil the overall effect,as what is visible is very appealing. Other high points include the blonde hunk Bastien Siepielski, cover man Mirco Bergamasco (who would have caught the eye of Michelangelo ,with his blonde curls and striking eyes had he been living 500 years ago)and guest sportsman James Caroll.
The book is a high quality hardback, printed in black and white on good glossy paper, and the dustjacket with its gold lettering all combine to make a top quality book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A vast and fascinating piece of history., 2 Dec 2009
Running at over 2500 pages, spread over 3 hardbacked volumes, this buy takes some time to even page through once. It is a strange experience paging through the years and the decades, starting off in 1951,the truly innocent and naive times when Bob Mizer first released his booklet Physique Pictorial.Strange because this book is a piece of history. Frozen in time, these images have not aged, while the flesh has.
It is a startling realization when looking at pictures of men such as Leonard Chambers, Jack Thomas, Forrester Millard, Jim Nolan, Glenn Robinson, & Richard Regan, that these men are now in their late 70s,or older. The decades have moved on, but these men are captured at their youthful best.

The early years feature no full nudity at all.Bob Mizer would have been in serious trouble had he even shown a hint of pubic hair. The fact that the early section of these books feature no full frontal nudity somehow does not matter. Many of these clean-cut and handsome faces are beauty enough, such as a 1953 cover man,Richard DuBois, who became Mister America 1953. Other gorgeous examples of the male physique are Forrester Millard, Joe Leitel and Jack La Lanne. Moving on through the 60s, the laws were tested, Mizer did spend time in prison, and eventually by 1969, full frontal male nudity was allowed to be published. Here in Physique Pictorial were the first images many were ever to see showing a man fully naked. Joe Dallesandro is one model featured here who went on to achieve fame with Andy Warhol. The seventies and eighties revealed ever more explicit images, but with growing competition from full colour pornographic magazines,Physique Pictorial with its small format and black and white print, and its quaint sometimes preachy editorial comment, seemed out of date. The final magazine was released in 1990. Bob Mizer died in 1992.

Having all the Physique Pictorial ever made, in these three volumes,is an amazing feat and one that Taschen were ambitious to tackle. Well done to them. This is a real piece of history. It is sad to read of the number of young men who modelled for Mizer who died young, often in violent or avoidable circumstances. The text offers a lively and personal look into the lives of the thousands of young men who feature here, and more than a little comment on the issues of the time.
This is a real box of history. Well worth it. A copy of this 3 volume box set deserves to be preserved in a time capsule.

Tom of Finland: The Art of Pleasure (Midi Series)

Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good overview of a long career., 2 Dec 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book features examples from the very earliest days of Tom, right through all his changing tastes and fine-tuning and improving of his drawing technique. There are large format illustrations found throughout, giving a good idea of the artwork itself, which is rightly, the focus of this book.
If you are a fan of Tom,but do not wish to buy the weighty new XXL volume, this is a fine book to still get a good look at the long and influential career of Tom of Finland.

4.0 out of 5 stars All Summer Long, I Get Around, & a lot more., 2 Dec 2009
This is the typical cars, sunshine, surfboards and girls Beach Boys CD. It perfectly captures that feeling and time. There are hits such as I Get Around, & Little Deuce Coupe, but all 29 tracks are great fun.If you are new to the music of the Beach boys, this would be a good introduction to their earlier years. It is difficult to imagine the stories of family strife and personal issues that affected the band, while listening to such bright & breezy tracks. Happy, beautiful music. The booklet comes with rare photographs and informative text.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just nice to look at,but also useful., 2 Dec 2009

Many guide books are overly colourful and illustrated, leaving little room for useful information. This one gets the balance right. It is packed with information that you need to know in order to make your trip as safe and pleasant as possible. For example, there is a warning about which areas of Lima to be careful in,especially at night. This information is vital. There are enough illustrations to give you a good idea of what to expect. Nicely laid out text, good pictures, and useful. What more do you need from a guide book? A good buy.

Dieux du Stade: Making of The Calendar 2004 DVD
Dieux du Stade: Making of The Calendar 2004 DVD

5.0 out of 5 stars French beauty in all its glory., 2 Dec 2009
This DVD, like the calendar and the book, shows that it is not for nothing that French men are known around the world to be a good-looking lot.
This film takes you behind the scenes of the 2004 calendar shoot,in the stadium changerooms, showers and surrounds. The DVD is divided into a chapter for each model,or group, for easy access to your favourite.
The highlight for me was the stunning Frederic Deltour. He has a face and a physique which deserve to be immortalized, and he is one of few men to appear fully naked in this film. His smile will melt your heart. The majority of the men have their modesty preserved by careful camera angles, editing,or a hand just in the right place. Even so,this makes for sexy viewing. Other notable appearances are cover man Mirco Bergamasco (whose blonde curls and lovely eyes would have caught the attention of Michelangelo if he had been living 500 years ago), Gorgeous Bastien Siepielski, and James Caroll (Irish-South African guest of the Stade players).
If two hours of beautiful men in the (almost) nude are what you like, then you will enjoy this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A modern classic., 1 Dec 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Even though the film Brokeback Mountain is only 4 years old, I feel that it would not be premature to call this movie a modern classic. This movie is going to continue to affect people for many years ahead, such is the power of Brokeback Mountain. This film was called the "gay cowboy movie" on its release, but that label does not do it justice,or prepare the viewer for what lies ahead. This is a love story, except the two lovers just happen to be men.
Ang Lee directs a wonderful cast here. Heath Ledger as Ennis Del Mar, was the perfect choice to play a man who finds it so difficult to share his feelings with anyone, yet also has a need for companionship and love. He deserved the oscar. Jake Gyllenhaal as Jack Twist,is equally affecting. The look of longing and heartbreak on his beautiful face is devastating. Michelle Williams as Alma also puts in an amazing performance as the cheated wife of Ennis. There are other appearances which are so powerful, such as Roberta Maxwell as the mother of Jack Twist. She is probably on screen for less than five minutes, but her performance had me thinking about her for days after seeing the movie.

Beautifully shot, with breathtaking scenery, great performances, and stunning attention to detail, I cannot recommend this film highly enough. The haunting and subtle music of Gustavo Santaollala adds another layer to the already powerful emotions dealt with. It is refreshing to see a film dealing with gay men that does not have a Gloria Gaynor song, or a cross-dressing,mincing hairdresser in sight. For too long that simplistic stereotyped view of how gay men act or look has been how the cinema has shown gays. And finally this film shows the reality. Gay men are real men,not the androgynous joke that ignorant people like to imagine.

This DVD set has informative extras such as: The making of Brokeback Mountain, An interview with Larry McMurtry & Diana Ossanna, On being A Cowboy, The music behind the movie, An instrumental slide show of scenes from the film, and an interesting review of the impact of the movie. There are 8 colour postcards included with the two discs.Brokeback Mountain deserved the best picture oscar,no question about it.
In summary: A deeply affecting, gorgeously made movie. Buy it.
