5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent package and sound for the money., 30 Jun. 2015
Length:: 6:34 Mins

The BLU-100 are a new earphone in the Brainwavz range coming in at the lower end of the pricing scale and appear to be targeted at sports use. They include an excellent package with the earphones accompanied by a rigid carry case, a pair each of small, medium & large silicon tips, 1 pair of ear stability inserts, a pair of Comply foam tips, a Micro USB cable, a user manual and a cable tidy when storing away. It's great to see this kind of package at this price point and as always, I'm surprised Brainwavz offer so much for the money.

The earphones themselves are of the in ear monitor (IEM) variety and can be worn with the audio cables either over and down the back of the ears or hanging straight down. The former method has the benefit of offering more support to keep the earphones in place as well as cutting down on cable phonics but given the style of cable included with these earphones, either method works well. The housings are fashioned from aluminium and feel solidly built although they are a little larger than other Brainwavz models due to the included battery and Bluetooth support. The earphones are connected to each other by a 60cm cable which includes an in-line remote with microphone.

As always, I always recommend 'burning in' for a good 10 hours or more by leaving the earphones connected to an audio source with a variety of music. Dynamic drivers such as these typically sound a little different after this process and will give their final sound.
Although these earphones are physically larger than the majority of the range, the driver itself is no larger being only 8mm in diameter so they can't quite match the smooth strong bass of some of the higher end models.

Being Bluetooth 4.0 earphones, they include a 60mAh battery which is rated as good for 4 hours of use or 100 hours in standby which is a very respectable figure given then is no bulky add on units. It supports HFP, HSP & A2DP profiles and also allows you to pair with two devices so you can easily swap between music sources. The aptX codec is also supported which should ensure higher quality audio if the audio source is also compatible. Bluetooth range is the standard 10 metres which should pose no issue given the audio source would typically be worn on the user for this type of earphone.

They have a tight, well defined bass with highs that are always audible but not as pronounced as the higher end models. The middle of the audio range is well represented and blend in nicely with the rest of the audio range. Depending on the track, vocals can stand out but not as much when accompanied by a busy backing score. The vocals still sound very good on complex tracks, it's more a case of the mix doesn't allow any specific part of the range to take over. For the record, these carry an official frequency range of 20hz - 20khz and a impedance of 30 ohms.

The better the quality of the track, the more smaller details pop out but these earphones are not as revealing as higher end models and 128kb tracks can safely provide an enjoyable listen.
After using the BLU-100 for around a week, I can see them easily being the go to pair of earphones for sports or gym work. They work well with most types of music but the 4 hour life span limit their utility to short duration use such as a workout or commuting. There are better sounding earphones out there but for the most part, these sound very good indeed and you would be paying more money for a better listening experience.

The in-line remote features a microphone and a small white LED to indicate, charging, pairing and power status. Also included are three buttons to handle things such as play/pause, volume, track skipping, call answering/rejecting and voice dialling. Call quality is as expected with calls coming in nice and clear and the caller also reporting clear audio on their end.

These are comfortable to wear and the selection of tips on offer contribute to this as well as help isolate you from outside sounds. Not everything is blocked out but the vast majority is to make listening to quieter passages easy going and these are on a par with anything else I have tested.
I actually prefer to be able to hear louder external noises when wearing earphones for safety reasons so would consider these ideal for normal day to day use. I did find that I had to use a larger sized tip than normal to get a good seal in the ear. Until I did this, I felt like the earphones were not as secure, even though they were, and the bass was not as pronounced as I expected. Ensuring a good seal is key to getting the most mass out of these earphones.

For the money, you are getting a great Bluetooth earphone with the BLU-100. Brainwavz have put together a great package from the audio and build quality to the supplied case and selection of ear tips. The in-line remote/microphone is really a requirement for Bluetooth use but just adds to the practicality for mobile phone use. I consider these very good all round earphones indeed, and yet again confirms Brainwavz as a company capable of producing excellent value for money in the earphone market.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another solid battery pack from RAVPower., 30 Jun. 2015
Length:: 2:50 Mins

The RP-PB22 is a rechargeable 13,000mAh Li-Polymer battery unit that can then be used to charge a slave device connected to it via USB. Included in the package is the External Battery, two USB to micro USB cables, a user manual and travel pouch. Due to this having two full sized USB ports, you can use any USB cable suitable for your device.

The RAVPower measures in at 127 x 81 x 22mm and weighs 309g. This has a stylish, two tone matt finish and feels very sturdy in the hand, in part due to the weight of the internal battery and also thanks to the good construction on offer. The unit does not have any rubber grips though, so be wary of placing this somewhere it may slide.
It features a power button and four LEDs in a single strip on the top to indicate remaining power. On the end it has two full sized USB ports as well as a central micro USB port for recharging. It takes around 15 hours to fully recharge the unit from empty although this may vary depending on power source. There is no supplied charger but the included cable or indeed any other micro USB cable can be used in connection with any USB source. A single tap on the power button will illuminate the LEDs indicating remaining charge.

From a full charge, 13,000 mAh of portable power is on offer. To put this in an IOS perspective, an iPhone 6 rated @ 1,810 mAh could be fully charged 7 times in a best case scenario although the figure will usually be less due to the inefficiencies of charging. An iPad Air 2 @ 7,340 mAh could be charged almost twice which is an impressive figure in its own right.
This power bank features both 2.4A & 2.1A USB ports, the former of which is perfect for the more power hungry iPad and you can continue to work on the iPad while it is charging. Two devices can also be charged simultaneously for a combined output of 4.5A which makes this a flexible performer and means both ports will work at their full capacity. The ports are also classed as iSmart which means they will offer the optimal charge for the connected device. One thing I did note during my testing was that regardless of what device you are charging or even if you are recharging the RAVPower itself, it remained cool at all times with no sign of heating up. This is a welcome bonus when it comes to portable devices and batteries.

The final addition to this power bank is the inclusion of an LED torch feature. Simply hold down on the power button for 1 second to activate this bright light which is a handy feature and more and more power banks seem to be including such a function.

For me, travelling with my usual compliment of gadgets makes a product like a power bank a sensible purchase. All my portable gadgets from phones, tablets, music player, ebook reader and camera can be charged via USB and having the ability to do this when away from a fixed power source gives real peace of mind. The RAVPower RP-PB22 delivers a high power capacity and flexibility of dual charging in a portable and well priced package.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly effective and impressive looking LED candle., 25 Jun. 2015
Length:: 4:53 Mins

When I first saw this product, I thought this was going to be some cheap and nasty gimmick product but after checking them out, I have been both surprised and very impressed.

Inside the package are three candles, a remote control and a user manual. Before we go any further, yes you read that correctly. There candles can be remote controlled. Seems like a gimmick but is a very handy feature. The biggest surprise for me though was that they are made from real wax and therefore look and feel like a real candle. You receive three different sized candles; they are all 3" in diameter but come in heights of 4", 5" & 6".

On the underside of each is a compartment for holding the batteries; each candle requires 3 AAA batteries with an expected usage of 150 hours before needing replaced. Next to this sits the on off switch. Think of this as a master switch though because once on, you can turn them on or off with the supplied remote control.
As I mentioned previously, these are made from real wax and the tops of each candle have been sculpted to look like a candle that has seen some use. In the middle of this is the moving wick which is essentially a shaped piece of white plastic attached to a small wire which reflects out the light coming from below.

The remote control offers quite a bit of flexibility with the candles and will control all three at the same time provided they are all in line of sight since it uses infra red. As well as turning on and off, there are dedicated buttons for one of four timer settings; 2, 4, 6 or 8 hours. Beneath these are buttons to let you switch modes between candle and light, the idea being that candle has an erratically flickering flame and the light mode is more of a steady illumination. In practice, it is a mixed bag, the candle mode makes the wick move around a lot more but the light flickers on and off on an all too regular basis for my liking. If it was more random then it would have appeared more realistic to me. The light mode on the other hand works much better for me. The wick moves a lot less and the light doesn't turn on and off but it still possesses a subtle flicker and is much more appealing in my eyes. The final option on the remote control are buttons for brightness. You can cycle through four levels of brightness although the range from dimmest to brightest is not that great. It is enough to be noticed although I would have preferred if they could go a little brighter.

To coin an old saying, the proof is in the pudding and these candles work very well indeed. Once I found the mode I liked, I was very impressed and these candles work equally well in low light as well as darkness. I would have preferred them to go a little brighter but otherwise, the light mode worked very well for me. I think if the candle mode was made a little more random then it would be a tough choice between the two modes and it is always nice to have that choice. My wife is a big candle fan and she has these in situ instead of regular candles now and if you knew her, you would know that is a great endorsement of these candles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality, portable bluetooth speaker., 14 Jun. 2015
Length:: 6:30 Mins

I have occasional travel with my work and so I am a big fan of portable music speakers. They are easy to pack and usually offer far better sound than the standard hotel options or the anaemic sound you get from a phone speaker. I've had a chance to test out a lot of different Bluetooth speakers of late and I'm genuinely impressed with the quality these small portable speakers can deliver. This speaker from EC Technology is no different!

Inside the box is the Speaker, a micro USB cable for charging, a 3.5mm audio cable & instruction manual.

This is a highly portable offering measuring in at 77 x 70 x 70mm and weighing 249g. It feels sturdy and well built with the compact dimensions giving it a very solid feel. This features an active speaker driver as well as an enhanced bass resonator for extra low end presence. Also housed in this design is the 500mAh Li-ion battery which is rated as good for an 8 to 12 hour playtime - this will presumably be dependent on volume. On the front of the unit is an LED indicator for charge and pairing status as well as a microphone and Bluetooth/Call button. On the rear, you will find a micro USB charging port and the 3.5mm line in. The main control buttons are actually on the bottom of the speaker which sounds like a bad design in theory but in practice it is a non issue. As well as the power button, there is the Play/Pause button in between volume up and down buttons which double up for track skipping. I say these buttons being located here are a non issue because you would typically set the volume once and then let your music play but you also have the option of controlling playback and volume from the music source such as your phone or similar.

The barrel design does point out something obvious though - this is a mono speaker. Some people may think of this as a short coming but I actually see it as a positive. The issue with such small speakers is that they don't offer any real stereo separation as such. Too many portable speakers on the market try to fit two small drivers into the unit with very little benefit. By sticking with a single, larger speaker driver at 45mm, this unit offers a much fuller sound for such a small size of speaker.

Connecting is done over Bluetooth 4.0 or using the supplied 3.5mm line in cable. While both options work well, the Bluetooth option offers up more convenience and by going with the newer version 4.0 revision, allows for good battery life. To keep things topped up, the supplied micro USB cable can be used with any powered USB port.

Thanks to the design EC Technology have followed, audio performance is surprisingly strong. Output power is rated at 5 watts which is perfectly adequate for a small portable speaker; it gets loud enough for most environments while remaining composed at all times. That single, larger driver offers up a much richer sound than you expect from this size of speaker and you get none of the tininess that often accompanies such small performers. While it won't have you shaking the floor boards, the bass comes along with a surprising punch and sounds meatier than any of the other portable speakers around this size I have tried that use smaller, stereo drivers. The passive subwoofer and airflow that the bass ports allow, all contribute to this bigger sound. Naturally though, this is still a single, small speaker unit and compromises in the audio quality are there but given this will for the most part be paired with compressed digital music over a Bluetooth connection, it is a very capable performer indeed. If you are looking for some kind of true HiFi experience, no speaker unit this size is going to deliver it but there are many similar units out there that can only aspire to the this speaker's abilities.

This is a great sounding speaker considering the small size and price. I like this single driver design as it allows a bigger sound than a comparatively sized stereo unit. There are many portable speakers out there but this is definitely one of the best all-round packages for price, size and importantly, audio quality I have tried. Throw in the ability to work as a hands free speaker system for mobile phones and this adds up to one compelling package.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical USB 3.0 hard drive enclosure., 14 Jun. 2015
Length:: 2:53 Mins

The Inateck USB 3.0 3 Port Hub and Hard Drive Disk caddy is an enclosure designed for ease of use with working with 2.5" SATA drives with its clever design for tool less operation. The unique selling point with this is the built in 3 port USB hub. You use up one USB port with the enclosure but gain three more.

Included in the package is the disk enclosure, a USB 3.0 cable, a USB DC cable and a user manual. Construction is of plastic which initially is a disappointment but in truth, with a drive inside the unit feels solid and I didn't encounter any issues during my testing. The enclosure measures in at 145 x 80 x 15mm and weighs 81g.

Using this caddy is simplicity itself, just push down on the lock switch and slide off the top cover then insert your drive. The case fits up to a 9.5mm tall drive perfectly with no looseness or rattling at all and can obviously accommodate the thinner 7mm drives as well. With the drive in place, you simply slide the top cover back till it clicks into place.

On one end you have the 3 USB Port Hub alongside an LED power indicator. On one side is the USB 3.0 input port and on the opposite side you will find an on/off switch as well as the optional DC input socket.
The DC input is optional because it certainly isn't required to power an SSD or Hard drive or flash drives via the HUB. The supplied USB DC cable can be used in conjunction with a USB power source if you want to supply additional power to the hub for charging connected devices.

This enclosure is powered by a chipset that offers true USB 3.0 connectivity meaning that greater performance of your drive should be realised - mechanical drives such as the one I tested with will unlikely show the true benefit but SSD drives should show a big improvement over less well specified drive enclosures.
UASP support is also included to make the most of a USB 3.0 and SSD combination and this feature is supported by recent versions of Mac, Windows and Linux Operating Systems.
Automatic power saving features are also at play and the enclosed drive will enter sleep mode after 10 minutes of inactivity.

USB external disk enclosures are usually fairly simple in what they offer but this product from Inateck offers both great performance as well as easy operation for the user, especially if you need to switch out drives fairly regularly. The real unique selling point with this enclosure is the built in 3 port USB 3.0 hub which makes this a very practical solution, especially for those with laptops with limited USB ports in the first place. If you are looking for an inexpensive and highly flexible USB caddy for a 2.5" SATA drive then it's hard not to recommend this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality USB charger, 13 Jun. 2015
Length:: 2:00 Mins

A simple, well constructed product that does one thing very well. That is exactly how I would describe the RP-UC10 USB charger from RAVPower.

In the box you will find the charger, a power lead and user guide. The charger measures in at 69mm x 101mm and sits 29mm tall while weighing 195g. It is made from white plastic, feels very sturdy and looks well finished. On the front there are a total of six USB ports and to the right of these is a blue LED to indicate power. Above the ports you will find their respective labelling and on the rear is the connection for a standard two core figure of 8 (C7) power lead which is supplied. The charger sits atop a thin rubber strip to prevent slipping.

The left three USB ports have a 2.4A output which is ideal for higher power items such as iPads and other tablets. The right three are 1A which is more of a standard for smartphones and other USB items. All ports are also classed as iSmart which means they adapt to the connected device and provide the fastest charging speed they can offer.

The total output of this charger is 10A meaning you can use all six USB ports for charging at the same time with minimal impact on charge time for the attached devices. This is important because not all chargers can claim to do this, some have a total output lower than the combined ports so the output from each port is throttled when all are in use meaning longer charge times. Kudos to RAVPower for this.

In use, this is a small, unassuming box that looks tidy on a desk and gives ample USB power for the power users out there - no pun intended. In this day and age, it seems almost a necessity and I have no hesitation in recommending the 6-Port USB Charger from RAVPower.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb quality, rock solid mount for your monitor., 11 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Ordered this and received the next working day. Very easy to set up and absolutely rock solid in place. Comes with a small rubber adhesive pad that attaches to the clamp and protects your desktop. Simply put the clamp in place and tighten up. Put on the collar and secure at a suitable height and then slide the arm onto the pole. It's easier to mount the arm to the back of the monitor in advance before sliding onto the pole. Included in the package are short and long VESA compatible bolts and spacers to cover the middle ground between the two sizes. The mount itself is compatible with VESA 75 and 100.
The arm itself is easy to articulate but stiff enough to remain secure in place with no wobble for the monitor. There is an included allen key to alter the tension of the hinges if you need things tighter or to swing a little more freely. The mount can also be angled up or down a little to assist with viewing angles. You can also easily rotate the monitor 90 degrees if you want to work with portrait orientation.
The arm features cable loops to keep your cabling tidy and there are also three quality velcro style cable ties to further augment this if required.
I've been very impressed with the quality and contents for the money and I wish I had bought this years ago.

5.0 out of 5 stars Small but handy way to add Bluetooth audio to gadgets and TVs., 5 Jun. 2015
Length:: 2:36 Mins

The Wireless Stereo Transmitter from Taotronics is designed to take the audio from a 3.5mm line out or USB port and transmit that over Bluetooth to a compatible device.

In the box you will find the Bluetooth Transmitter, a USB to micro USB cable, a 3.5mm male audio cable, a 3.5mm female to 2 RCA male cable & a User Guide. The transmitter itself is surprisingly small measuring in at 45 x 32 x 9mm and weighing just 9g.

On the top of the unit is a small power button and LED indicators for status and charging. On one end is the 3.5mm audio input and a micro USB port.

The transmitter features a rechargeable battery that is rated good for 10 hours per charge but can also be used whilst charging. The supplied USB cable is used for both charging and USB audio input. This is one of the great features of this transmitter, it can accept audio input over USB or 3.5mm line in which makes this a flexible performer.

This unit uses Bluetooth 4.0 and A2DP profile which is standard although unfortunately there is no aptX support for improved audio quality when streaming. It does feature a DSP to improve audio though and the quality is more than acceptable. There is no screen so pairing is achieved by holding down the power button for 6 seconds to enter pairing mode and then you will need to put the receiving device, be it headphones, speaker or similar into pairing mode. Provided there is only one compatible Bluetooth device in range that is currently in pairing mode and supports A2DP, it should pair and connect with this stereo transmitter automatically.

As is common with such devices, you can get some background hiss to the audio, the trick is to ensure you don't have the volume levels set too high to start with, especially on the source. You may also encounter a slight audio delay, this won't be an issue with music but may be an annoyance when watching TV for example. The delay between on screen action and the related audio is not big but some people are more sensitive to this than others. If this is an issue, I recommend checking the TV settings to see if there is an audio delay on the output connections - this resolved the issue for me on my Samsung TV.

The TT-BA06 from TaoTronics is a simple way to add Bluetooth audio support to devices that do not already feature this. Most modern devices have Bluetooth but if you wanted to stream from an older iPod for example, this is a perfect solution. Where I can really see this being a benefit is with the likes of TVs as most modern TVs in my experience do not offer Bluetooth support. This would be a great feature for watching TV late at night with Bluetooth headphones so you don't disturb others. If you have a device that would like to add Bluetooth audio support to, this seems like a great option.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, easy to use Bluetooth car kit., 5 Jun. 2015
Length:: 2:27 Mins

The TT-BR03 turns any car stereo with a standard 3.5mm line in port into a fully-fledged, Bluetooth Hands-Free system. This lets you both stream music as well as handle phone calls, hands-free over Bluetooth.

Inside the box is the hands-free receiver, a car USB charger, magnetic suction base and a user guide. The receiver itself measures in at 43 x 43 x 15mm and weighs 27g. The attached cable is exactly 1 metre long which should help in placing this in a suitable location.

Set up is fairly simple, the receiver plugs directly into your car stereo using the included 3.5mm audio cable and is powered using the included USB cable. This can be powered directly from a USB port in your car if you have one, otherwise the package includes a twin port USB car charger. This charger has a USB port for the receiver as well as a spare 2.1A USB port to power a mobile device such as a phone or tablet.

Pairing is achieved through the normal process of turning on Bluetooth on your mobile device and searching for the receiver although the process can be automated if the mobile supports NFC.

Once paired, you can stream music directly from your mobile device as you would with any other Bluetooth speaker. The receiver supports the aptX codec which ensures a higher quality Bluetooth audio provided your mobile device also supports it. Buttons on the receiver let you play/pause music as well as skip forwards or back and also change volume. Because the receiver is mounted on a magnetic base, this can be positioned somewhere visible and close to hand to ensure easy operation.

Hands-free phone calls are the other benefit with this kit and the receiver has a built in microphone so you can leave your mobile phone in your pocket and still hold a phone call. The play/pause button lets you answer or hang up the call and voice clarity was excellent according to the person on the other end of the call.

The receiver also features an on/off switch if you need to ensure it is not in use but I personally think you would want to leave this switched on so it powers on when you start the car.

During my testing, I found the audio quality to be very good and the phone always connected automatically when I was in the car. Answering a phone call will pause the music as you would expect so when the call ends, the music resumes from where you left off.

The majority of modern cars already have some form of smart connectivity or Bluetooth support but surprisingly, not all support both phones calls, and music streaming and of course older cars may feature none at all. If you have an audio system with a 3.5mm line in connection and are looking to introduce Bluetooth support for phone calls or music streaming, the TT-BR03 from TaoTronics is an excellent option.
