4.0 out of 5 stars An informative and affectionate portrait, 30 Jun. 2014
Having lived in the neighbourhood of Portobello Road when it was still a street market, and before the tourist hordes descended, I was very interested in all the information Julian Mash has dug up. Strange to be reminded how rough that millionaires' row once was. A very enjoyable book for anyone who knows the area.

3.0 out of 5 stars Do it yourself, 17 Dec. 2013

The description doesn't make it clear that you aren't buying bunk beds, but a kit to build bunk beds. By the time I realised that, I had unpacked too many of the components to contemplate re-packing and sending them back. There was no way I could assemble them myself. I had to get a professional carpenter, and it took him most of a day to do so, which enormously increased the cost. Responding to this complaint, the supplier wrote: "The assembly is DIY, all fixings and instructions are included. A professional carpenter is not required to assemble this product. We have children and the elderly that assemble these. It is simply building by numbers." So be warned: if you're good at building by numbers, the end result is a useful piece of furniture. But for me, it has turned out to be a very expensive one!

5.0 out of 5 stars A cautionary tale, 8 Sept. 2013
Women went to market with a wheelbarrow full of banknotes, what should have been generous legacies were paid over in full with a postage stamp. This was hyper-inflation which almost destroyed the German middle classs in 1923, and led, almost directly, to the rise of Nazism and everything that followed. It's a fascinating, horrifying and frightening episode in history, brilliantly described in this book, which is as gripping as a thriller - except that every word is true. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A sobering story, 3 Sept. 2013
A fascinating, saddening and yet eventually uplifting story, beautifully told. It's an eye-opener about some peoples' lives. But also a tribute to human resilience and the healing power of love.

5.0 out of 5 stars An ideal present, 11 May 2012

This granny won lots of points for giving this book to 8 years old twins. No suggestion of reading it aloud - they grabbed, read, loved and finished it at top speed. Highly recommended for (roughly) five to eight year olds - and their elders!

5.0 out of 5 stars A salutary experince, 2 May 2012
I read a lot of crime fiction, and am finding more and more of the best books in that genre are set in Germany just before, during and after WW2.You can see why people choose the setting - which often overpowers the plot and characters. My interest provoked by such fiction I read Exorcising Hitler to see how accurately novelists were describing post war Germany - and found myself absorbed, horrified, enlightened and even entertained by this scholarly work. The fact is that no novel could be more exciting or mysterious than an accurate account of what was really happening there at the time, and why, and what happened next. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A remarkable achievement, 16 Feb. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A daughter writes about her own mother with love and understanding instead of taking revenge, and with candour that does not lead to betrayal. The subject of the book - Lawrence Durrell's first wife - is fascinating even to a reader who is quite uninterested in Lawrence Durrell himself, or any of his writing. In effect, this is a most unusual biography.I recommend it highly.
