4.0 out of 5 stars Fine for the everyday reader, 1 Jan. 2013

This book brings Victorian London to life in an imaginative way. Of course, adding "Dickens" to the title means that it should cover only a fairly restricted time period of Victorian London life and I think it strayed outside that on a couple of occasions. A well-researched book and particularly good for those who do not have access to some of the writings of Charles Booth, William Mayhew and Engels, which also describe Victorian cities and, in particular, London.

5.0 out of 5 stars Work Well, 1 Jan. 2013

Everything arrived on time after Thornton Ross's pharmacist had asked me some sensible questions regarding usage. Senna Laxative tablets did what they were supposed to do and were slightly cheaper than the regular brand, which was a huge bonus.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does the Job!, 1 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The product arrived on time but the packaging was flimsy so the box inside containing the tablets was crushed. However, the tablets themselves were undamaged and they do the jb for which they were intended. A reliable product but if you are a first-time user, be careful to take the minimum dose, preferably at a weekend - just incase!

5.0 out of 5 stars Life-Saver!, 20 Nov. 2012

A brilliant product that does what it says. It goes on more smoothly than hyaluronic acid alone (which is heaps more expensive and tends to sink straight into the skin, thus being an expensive option). I have been using this product for 5 years now and will continue to use it for as long as it works. Good value and really reciommended for anyone with dry or damaged skin that needs a moisture boost.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as Max as I had anticipated, 7 Nov. 2012
I too have Irritable Bowel (IBS) but in my case it is mainly that I suffer from chronic constipation due to having to take high-strength diuretics. I had taken Senocot before and found I needed more than the 4 maximum they said, so I decided to try these. I took one the first night - nothing. I took 2 the second night - nothing. Do I dare take 3 tonight? However, others who have written here are correct. They do make your bowel lazy and you can end up dependent on them. However, in my case, if I did not take them, I simply would never "go"!

Overall, this seems to be good for most people (although not for me)but they may need to save it for a really bad case of constipation rather than a slight feeling of being bloated. Drinking losts of water can help constipation, as can a couple of pints of beer on an empty stomach!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully realised, 9 Sept. 2012
This review is from: Parade's End [DVD] (DVD)
It was always going to be hard to capture the essence of the Edwardian era and the subtleties of manners of the time, as well as deciding what to keep in and what to omit in what was, already, a long, complex text. However, with a script by the very talented Tom Stoppard, a playwright with many intelligent and densely allusional scripts behind him already, some great photography (some of the shots look like paintings they are so beautifully composed) and some (although not all at all times) excellent acting, this series really shows what the BBC can accomplish when it makes the effort. The brief bits of humour also break up the intensity and provide some lighter moments. A Highly accomplished achievement. Do buy it.

Lud Heat: A Book of the Dead Hamlets

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant and multilayered poem, 19 Jun. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The poet starts with an extract from John Bunyan's 'A Pilgrim's Progress', exhorting us to 'look up' rather than 'down', where we are preoccupied with our own petty lives, Sinclair takes you on a psychogeographical journey through London, where mysticism, beauty, life and death all occupy the same space and a palimpsest of history is revealed, even in the location of the most mundane sites, such as a Kentucky Fried Chicken diner! This is a poem that initially seems extremely challenging, but further readings open up layers of meaning and make you look at London - and life and time - in a very different way.

Read this book and then read Peter Ackroyd's 'Hawksmoor' to really see what psychogeography and metafiction are all about - both are challenging and both reward more than one reading.

An intellectual puzzle that should be read more widely - absolutely brilliant.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sanctuary - Season 2 DVD, 9 Jun. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am about one third of the way through this boxed set and have yet to find it as compelling as the first series. However, I am optimistic that things will improve as the season continues.
What I was less happy about was the poor packaging; not so much the way the DVDs were stored as the outer sleeve which was very flimsy and made it quite hard to insert the set of DVDs without damaging it.
I understand that a 3rd series has now been shot and aired in the USA and a 4th one is in the pipeline, so I am looking forward to those becoming available in the UK.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could Do Better, 9 Oct. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Usually, York notes provide plenty of insights into the texts. This was just very generalised and vague. Perhaps it would be better to split "The Prelude" up into books (in much the same way that they did with "Paradise Lost") to make it easier to give assistance with vocabulary, historical contexts and better critical commentary - all of which were lacking here. A pretty poor job on the whole and a lot of money wasted on it!
