Strong performances throughout. Toby maguire is a bit oddly cast. The plot twists are compelling and unexpected.
The style is very authentic to a 40s film.
A little long.

1.0 out of 5 stars A waste of ability, 15 Jan. 2016

No. Very weak. A waste of ability. Don't trust that by throwing stars together magic will just happen. Write a script.

1.0 out of 5 stars and not very funny. It does not show the show, 7 Nov. 2015
This is a con. The blurb on the back says Peter 'is back with EVEN more brand new live comedy'. It then says, 'We also take a unique and often hilarious look behind the scenes of life on the road...'

In fact, this is a documentary about life on the road during the tour, and not very funny. It does not show the show, except as a few short clips. It claims it 'Includes over 55 minutes of NEW live stand-up'. But this is just non-sequential cuts of Kay on stage, interacting with the audience, and not performing actual material. Whoever sat with a stopwatch and came up with 55 minutes is a liar.

Peter Kay should take this out of shops. It is seriously damaging to his reputation. It looks like this is just intended to con people, because it is carefully packaged and worded to look like a live stage show recording, and it isn't.

4.0 out of 5 stars But why does Tom always appear as characters called 'Jack'?, 9 Sept. 2015

While I struggle with Cruise as a lead man (I don't find him relatable; he leaves me cold) he DOES put his name to some good sci-fi scripts that perhaps wouldn't otherwise be made. This is good stuff. The mood is unusually mature (despite being based on a graphic novel), the twist is good, and the effects are peerless.

But why does Tom always appear as characters called 'Jack'?

The negative reviews are wrong. This builds slowly, is well written, and Patrick Fabian is an excellent lead. Well acted throughout. The twist on the theme of exorcism is good, and the ending, though sudden and strange, is really disturbing. A good spooky film, not reliant gore for shocks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed this. Don't particularly like Tom Cruise, 8 Mar. 2015

Really enjoyed this. Don't particularly like Tom Cruise, but he was ideal for this. The script and plot are tight and well paced, even the film is a little longer than most. The effects are excellent. A good sci fi yarn.

1.0 out of 5 stars Comes from an very poorly read place, 7 Mar. 2015

Following after The Hunger Games, this very similar teen fodder. The sci-fi is pitiful, the world contorted to a simplistic world view that shouts a crude, ill-considered message. Once again the heroine's character journey concludes with her becoming a warrior, a male arch-type. The message to young girls being, man-up and tool-up. Really a huge step back from advances made by Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz in 1939.

2.0 out of 5 stars Denzel should know better, 21 Feb. 2015

This review is from: The Equalizer (Amazon Video)
Starts well. The character differs from the gentlemanly, iron fist in the velvet glove character played by Edward Woodward in the TV series. Washington is convincing as a cold, O.C.D. suffering ex-government killer trying to absolve himself of guilt for past crimes committed on behalf of the state. But he doesn't really have to act much. The enemies are immigrants, Russian Mafia. The film fails when it turns out that The Equalizer can take them all out without breaking a sweat. He is never in any real jeopardy, and he never undergoes any kind of internal journey. Violence IS a rewarding choice, then, with no payback. He even goes to Moscow and effortlessly executes an oligarch and all his bodyguards. After dealing with the enemy, then next thing we see is a big american bus on a sunny all-american street with Denzel walking home carrying his groceries in an all-american paper bag. The immigrants have been judged and executed, and America has judged and executed its enemies on their own soil with effortless impunity. A comfort blanket for american times. Denzel should know better.

Bait

4.0 out of 5 stars Corny but fun, 28 Jan. 2015
This review is from: Bait (Amazon Video)
I am a sucker for shark films since seeing Jaws when I was way too young and impressionable. I watch any that promise the chance to re-live that first hit. However, in my opinion, there has never been a really good shark film since. Okay, Jaws 2 wasn't too awful.

Be honest, Deep Blue Sea sucked. The sharks kept changing sizes between shots. The only other decent shark film is The Reef, and thats just a bit too slow. It is the most realistic though (being a true story) and the few effects are the best yet, even now.

Bait is a popcorn horror monster movie. It's about as serious as Tremors, if you remember that, in fact it has loads of similarities. It's not overly sick and cruel like, say the Piranha remake, but it is quite gorey. And it's better than Deep Blue Sea by a nautical mile.
