4.0 out of 5 stars Mine of Information, 20 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is a reproduction of Gairdner's original 1861 publication of some of the letters concerning Richard III and Henry VII. Be prepared to buy at least Volume II if you want to get access types of letters other than those from "official" state papers such as those in the BL Harleian MS 433 for Richard III. Although a lot of useful information is available, it needs to be 'mined'. There is no index and the style and translations is definitely of the period. This is a book that will repay study, but over the long term - years rather than months. There may be later publications that present some of the materials in a more modern manner, such as the Richard III Society' publication of the Harleian MS 433 (4 volumes, with an index - Published 1979-1983).

This book certainly has lots of them. Like most books about military campaigns, it is more favourable to the winners, but not overly so. It is not really a book for reading cover to cover in one go, though this is OK as the subject is divided up intelligently and treated as a unit, with only slight assumptions that earlier chapters/subjects have been read in full, and the topics chosen are interesting and their treatment sometimes thought provoking.

This review is from: Mozart Album (Audio CD)
I lost my copy of this many years ago during house moves, and have only just got round to replacing it! It really is a brilliant CD with rock and classical music being sympathetically fused. I particularly like Herbie Flowers and the Horn Concerto track.

4.0 out of 5 stars It does what it says in the tin!, 23 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very good introduction to the conundrum that is Richard III for a reader new to the subject. As you may guess from the title, don't expect a "learned" treatise, but Matthew Lewis has a great depth of knowledge behind him which has enabled him to produce a succinct summary of both sides of the debate about Richard.

This is almost a "can't put down book". The process/progress of the search is skilfully interleaved with a lucid and up to date reviews of the life of Richard III. The book has just the right amount of detail for a general reader. The notes and a bibliography allow anybody wanting to delve deeper, whether they are are a general reader or a serious student of Richard III.

This coverage of Richard III is interesting and rewarding, though it does require some effort due to the changes in the style of writing over the intervening period from 1767.

4.0 out of 5 stars Who supported Richard III?, 1 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This a is a comprehensive examination of how medieval kings had to operate, dealing with Richard III in particular. It covers in great detail who Richard "favoured" (or didn't) and suggests why this was so. It also explains the factors in why people did or did not turn up at Bosworth, whether of not they fought there. This is a book to be "mined" for information over and over again.

This slim book is a good quick introduction to the Battle of Bosworth with clear explanations and good background information. Easily readable with a final chapter coving the discovery of Richard III's bones in Leicester.

Very good background history book with a "people" slant that acts as a great basis for later more detailed histories.
