Very much standard peplum fare, this is not bad.

The story is simple. Jason & the Argonauts have set off to find the golden fleece. Meanwhile, back home, the evil dictator is trying to bed Jason's fiance - or something like that.

It's a little episodic in places - basically the Argonauts have one adventure following another, but that's okay, it provides plenty of variety and you can never guess what's coming next. Nadine Sanders, Miss Texas 1953, stands out as the Queen of the Witches, and also French actress Cathia Caro as the love interest of one of the Argonauts.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Evening's Entertainment, 6 April 2008
This is a very jolly Hercules movie - although originally in Italy, the hero was Maciste, an almost identical rival to Hercules. Hercules is Italian actor Sergio Ciani (or Alan Steel in the credits). The star of the show, however, is the evil femme fatale, Jany Clair, a French actress starring as Queen Samara.

The plot is a bit odd to say the least. Queen Samara is sacrificing peasants to the moon men (who look like rock monsters) - it's never realy explained why but it keeps them happy. The Queen's sister, however, has to be a special sacrifice in order to bring the moon men's queen back to life. But fear not, our hero Hercules will set about rescuing her - and in doing so win the heart of her handmaiden forever.

This has some dull moments in it, but also some decent fight scenes and great set design. The moon men are a complete joke but overall it's a fairly passable couple of hours for 10-year-olds or those who are still 10 at heart.

Orson Welles looks slow and lumbering in this slow and lumbering adaptation of the Bibical story.

For about 80% of the film, there's nothing but a succession of static (though beautifully crafted) sets and lots of talk, talk, talk. Hey guys - remember these are meant to be MOTION pictures!

There are some good points - Orson's acting carries depth, although he only has a relatively small role; the giant Kronos who plays Goliath is an interesting personality; and the final battle scene has some merits.

Overall, however, you have to work at this one to enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Peplum, 3 April 2008
This is a first-class piece of peplum - those sword-and-sandal movies that Italy churned out by the dozen in the early 60s.

It concerns Ursus, a character similar to Hercules. The story concerns an evil dictator who invades the gentle shepherd community of Ursus and takes everyone away as slaves whilst Ursus is out of the village. A second plot involves Princess Diana, the kind daughter of the former king who had been murdered by the dictator. Ursus loves Diana and sets about rescuing her and then overthrowing the dictator and rescuing his people along the way. This involves great tournaments and fights.

However, the movie is stolen by perhaps the most beautiful woman who ever lived - Italian movie and pop star Claudia Mori, one half of the golden couple who dominated the celeb sheets in Italy throughout the sixties and seventies, the other half being Adriano Celestano. Claudia deliciously plays the femme fatale in the movie and is a knock-out!

American bodybuilder Ed Fury is the leading man (who once played The Perfect Man in Abbott & Costello Go To Mars) and he makes a good job of it. The sets are magnificent and there's an excellent backplot which appears to have involved the scriptwriters creating a whole new religion.

Superior to most of this genre of movies, this will be well worth your time. I promise you'll watch it more than once!

3.0 out of 5 stars Go Punjab, 30 Mar 2008
This review is from: Dil Apna Punjabi [DVD] (DVD)
First - the good news. It's interesting to see a regional film in Punjabi, rather than Hindi in UK cinemas.

The story is a family romance. Our hero is a lazy son, educated but not interested in getting a job. He wants to marry his girlfriend but both sets of parents are against it because he's so lazy. So, he decides to leave home and make something of himself. He moves to the UK and becomes a big international singing star (as you do). He then returns to the Punjab in triumph.

The music's great - bhangra fusion - and the girl in London, Mahek Chahal, who in real life is Norwegian Punjabi, is absolutely gorgeous - I hope we see a lot more of her in future.

The only real problem with the film is its predictability. Anyone who's seen a Bollywood movie in the last thirty years could have written this on the back of an envelope - and yet this was intended to be the big Punjabi showpiece - some letdown. Even the possibility of the tension and drama from a love triangle was squashed almost as soon as it had begun. "I want to marry you," "But, I don't want to," "Okay, I understand - but at least we can be friends." I'm paraphrasing but not by much.

Even so, worth seeing for the music and for Mahek.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bolly Good Action Movie, 28 Mar 2008
This review is from: Elaan [DVD] (DVD)
This is a movie best seen with a big bag of popcorn and your girlfriend snuggled up close.

The songs are great, the dancing terrific and Lara Dutta looks absolutely amazing (best not pass that information onto the aforementioned girlfriends).

The plot is the standard Bollywood revenge plot. Hero's father is murdered by international gangster. Hero builds a team of heroes around him and then sets off to Europe in revenge.

Great locations by the way - Venice, the Austrian Alps, Munich - wonderful stuff. But the tale's in the telling. Great action scenes with Bollywood action hunk John Abraham at his beefy best and luckily they haven't given him many lines to drone over - so he comes over as almost as cool as me.

Of course the movie is riddled with plot holes, including two gaping ones - but I'll leave you to work that out for yourself - and anyway that's part of the fun of watching Bollywood movies, right?

A great evening's entertainment and extremely modestly priced - well worth the investment.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Evening's Entertainment, 24 Mar 2008

The main reason for getting this movie is that it features fairly substantial appeareances by Sherlyn Chopra - the 'outrageous' bad girl of Bollywood - "I don't believe in dating, I believe in mating" - and former Miss Universe, Lara Dutta. They even appear together in one scene which must be pretty dangerous for both of them.

The movie itself is throwaway hokum with the usual dire performance by Bobby Deol, balanced at least in part by Akshay Kumar - it's about two friends from childhood who promise to stay friends forever. The movie then wraps this up in romantic problems, some pretty decent songs and the usual dollop of Bollywood melodrama - with a slightly dated feel to it - some directors obviously finding it more difficult than others to make it into the new century.

Overall, though, a fairly good night's entertainment, best served with popcorn and beer.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Public-Spirited Film, 27 Jan 2008
This review is from: Corporate [DVD] (DVD)
This is a very interesting film to emerge from Bollywood at a time when there is a seismic shift in Indian society away from the public sector towards the private sector.

It very cleverly incorporates the process of institutional corruption that may occue as state-owned enterprises are sold to the private sector, whilst at the same time challenging the profit-centred ethos of the private corporation where decent and professional people are often driven to behave in indecent and unprofessional ways - managing this behaviour is one of the great challenges of the twenty-first century. I would recommend seeing this movie alongside the documentary, 'The Corporation'. There's also an interesting nod in this film towards the Coca-Cola polluted water scandal of a couple of years back.

The movie itself is a competent drama involving industrial espionage wrapped around the personal tale of Nishi, the ever-beautiful Bipasha Bapu, dressed to kill in power suits in a way that will leave men worldwide drooling. (However, there is a scene where she is actually upstaged by Shweta Menon playing the role of a prostitute - be careful Bips!)

It's a good film but doesn't quite make five stars because of an improbable scene where a manager puts in a bid for a company that even a stupid manager wouldn't make - it undermines the plot slightly - and the ending is snatched at a little - but overall, some good entertainment with a bit more thought in it than most movies.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Small Quibble, 6 Jan 2008
This review is from: Fanaa [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
I have one small quibble with Maria Alvarez Folgado's review - I think Kajol holds her own easily against Aamir Khan in this one.

There's no doubting the strength of Aamir's performance - how he can switch from romantic lead to committed terrorist easily, but Kajol's beuty. innocence and charm - and tough determination in the last few scenes - both to claim her love and to save her love - match up to Aamir at every step and provide him with the platform around which he can weave his magic.

This is a thoroughly engaging film - romantic comedy in the first half and action-packed thriller in the second. Once again, Aamir is able to explain the drives and emotional conflicts of the terrorist and make them human and understandable but without condoning in any way the random violence of their actions - one of the most poignant moments in the film is when a decent-looking Indian army paratrooper falls victim to Aamir's cowardly actions.

And then there are the underlying themes of the film - would you kill for love and when there are no good choices, how do you decide on the lesser of the evils?

This film is so deep and moving, it will leave you thinking about it for days and weeks afterwards.

5.0 out of 5 stars Three Interesting Women, 31 Dec 2007
This review is from: So Close [DVD] [2002] [2004] (DVD)
This is a very stylish film directed by Corey Yuen, who was also responsible for the excellent martial arts movie 'DOA'.

The action scenes in this movie are equally precisely choreographed and full of fantastic twists and turns. It has a plot of sorts - but that's really there to help string the unbelievable action sequences together.

The three leading women are amongst the most interesting actresses in China at the moment. Karen Mok is part-Eurasian, appears to be a bit of a genius who speaks five languages and majored in Italian literature, and has also starred in many Hollywood movies. Zhao Wei is the bad girl of Chinese cinema, having once modelled in a Japanese war flag. She's also a well-known singer and sometimes goes under the name of Vicky Zhao. On top of all that, she is also a soap star in her native land. Shu Qi is the gorgeous babe who appeared in 'Transporter' with Jason Statham but is still searching a little for that great super-hit of a movie.

Definitely worth a night's entertainment.
