5.0 out of 5 stars Really easy to use, 18 Sep 2011
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I think this is excellent value for money, it's not as fancy as the courses costing hundreds but I found I was making very good progress with this. There is a 'slow button' which allows you to listen to the words slowly and it mainly works on a flashcard-based system. It was not immediately obvious how to use it but the instructions are right there where you can see them and there is not a lot to it so you can't go too far wrong with a bit of common sense. There are two main components to it, firstly the flashcard-based vocabulary section which teaches you new words, first just to recognise them and then to recall them and then type them in when the English is given. This is an effective method which does tend to ingrain the words in your memory quite effectively. Secondly the conversation/ reading section which has videos and scripts to get to grips with how it fits together. As I said, this is not as flash as the expensive courses but it's not a bad alternative for those on a budget.

The Ultimate Book of Baby Knits
The Ultimate Book of Baby Knits
by Debbie Bliss
Edition: Paperback
Price: 11.89

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely as always, 24 Jun 2011
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
As I have come to expect from Debbie Bliss this is a wonderful and stylish book of baby knits which manage to be classic yet up-to-date. There are more pullovers and cardigans/ jackets han anything else but there are also trousers, toys and blankets and the odd unusual pattern. The only thing I would say is please be aware that not all the patterns go beyond 12 months and I think the booties even younger, so if you play on knitting something for your special little person's 1st birthday you would be limited to the ones which go up further in sizes. As usual the patterns are written for Debbie Bliss brand yarns but those who know how to substitute will have more options, however, in my experience it usually works out more like the pictured item when the suggested yarn is used or one of similar quality and fibre content. I sometimes substitute my own handspun yarns which do of course end up looking a bit different but as they are natural fibres it works well. i wouldn't suggest substituting acrylic yarns or a very different fibre blend as the results may be disappointing.

Ok... this is nutritionally awesome stuff, for less than 300 calories you're getting non-animal protein, omegas, fibre and loads of vitamins and minerals, and with no wheat, gluten or dairy and it's vegan, the nutritional profile is just great. You whizz 6 teaspoons with some milk or vegan milk alternatives and some fruit. It is more palatable (by a LOT) than other vegan protein powders I have tried but to be honest I still do think there is something revolting about drinking meals, I just can't take to it. Someone who loves shakes would no doubt find it more drinkable than I did but I am yet to give it a second try although I did manage two thirds of the first one. I did it with banana which was probably a bit sicklier than if I had used berries, so next time I will try with berries.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good skillet, shame it comes unseasoned., 16 Jun 2011
This is a decent skillet of good size, shape and of course gives excellent heat distribution being cast iron and it's very good value at the price. The metal handle is ideal for transferring the skillet from hob to oven, for example to make a frittata, without having to unscrew the handle like you do on a cast iron frying pan. The downside being, of course, that it gets hot so you need an oven glove to handle it, but every design has it's plusses and minses.

I have knocked off a star because it was not seasoned in any way when it arrived, the picture shows one with a dark patina implying it is ready to use but I received one which had no patina at all, dark silver metal and I had to stink the house out to season it as this involves burning oil onto the skillet. If you don't do this everything you try to cook will just stick to the pan.

It is also worth noting that if you have certain types of modern hob you won't be able to use this as it has a ring on the underside, like a raised ridge running round the base raising it off the surface underneath. This won't affect gas hob users but I can't for the life of me understand why it's there, because if you use a range, solid fuel stove or induction hob you need the bottom of the pan in contact with the heat source.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is just as good as it's always been and this is a great set for little ones to start with Lego building. Duplo blocks are just like normal Lego but bigger and easier to put together and take apart. This set has numbers and pictures on some of the blocks to add another educational dimension. It's robust, it's simple, durable, colourful and fun and best of all, any other Duplo sets you have or buy in future will be compatible and the more Duplo you have the more possibilities there are as to what you can build. There is not loads of blocks in this set, Duplo is fairly expensive in my opinion, you don't get very much for your money in terms of quantity, but as there will potentially be many years of enjoyment and it may well be passed along to a younger child in years to come then it is great value in that respect, particularly these days when so many toys are easily broken and end up in the landfill before long. Nice to see that Duplo is still just as it was and lego still make this classic building toy series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb value, 4 May 2011
These are excellent headphones at an incredible price. They are very loud, excellent noise cancellation meaning you can hear things in them perfectly clearly, even stood right next to a loud PA, the sound is lovely and crisp and clear and the build quality is top notch. They 'fold' by pushing the ear pieces into the headband wich effectively halves the size for carrying as is commonly seen with headphones designed for DJs and sound engineers and there is a carry bag. The earpieces swivel which some DJs like so that they can easily use just one ear. They are comfortable and fit over my large dreadlocked hair which is a bonus for me as hats, helmets and headphones are often problematic for dreadlock wearers, but these are adjustable. They come with two leads which are interchangeable and replaceable: a curly lead and a straight one, and these are simply attached by a mini-jack on the lead part and and a socket on the body of the headphones. Basically you are getting a professional quality DJ type set of phones for not just cheaper but a fraction of the cost of a high-end branded pair and with no compromise whatsoever on quality or performance. I have used other Citronic gear before and it is fantastic value for money, I have one of their mixers and it's in a whole different league to other mixers in the price range. If these eventually wear out in years to come I hope they are still being made as I will be getting another pair!

This lantern takes 4x D cell batteries so I expected good battery life, but it lasted just a couple of hours before dying on us, we didn't even get the first night out of it! It's just not suitable for camping trips, even very short ones. A large, bulky lantern like this should last a long weekend at the very least and really ought to last longer than that. I will be returning this one and getting an LED one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 18 Mar 2011
You couldn't go too far wrong with this carrier, it offers excellent comfort and support and is fully adjustable allowing the wearer to tweak the fit for maximum comfort. The waist belt goes from very small to very large so it would fit everyone from the petite women to the larger man with no extra bits and bobs to add on. The waist padding is very sturdy and for those of us with a bit of the baby belly left over there is more padding around the waist strap across your front in a back carry than with other similar carriers I have tried which is much more flattering than a webbing strap.

The carrier is relatively easy to use but some users bay find the main waist clip a bit fiddly to undo as it has a safety button which must be pressed to get it undone. My husband was unable to use this in a front carry as he was not flexible enough to reach over to his upper back to do up the 'chest' belt, but you can cross the straps over instead if this is an issue.

There is a zip across the upper part of the body panel which can be unzipped to lengthen the body. This is useful for getting a full snuggle position with a younger baby and of course for a bigger child, but as the carrier is on the narrow side it may not go knee to knee on a large toddler although this carrier does go up higher than most in the maximum weight range.

If you ar tempted to get a Baby Bjorn type carrier please consider this instead, it is a much better carrier, comes in a range of colours and offers a much healthier carrying position for the baby and parent.

1.0 out of 5 stars Did not do what it said on the 'tin', 18 Mar 2011
Nope, I followed all the instructions and mixed up this foul-smelling powder as directed, trying not to breathe in the fumes or the powder and poured it into the drawer about 15 minutes into the cycle as per instructions. The 100% cotton fabric came out just as yellow as it was before it went in! No good at all. I know some people have had success with this stuff but unfortunately I wasn't one of them!

4.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps a good first step for some, 18 Mar 2011
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I think this book is designed to appeal to the sort of people who have never considered spirituality as a big feature in their lives and have become 'bogged down' by modern living. While there is little or nothing new in this book (all the ideas, suggestions and concepts are derived from established spiritual schools of thought) it is presented in a way which may appeal to people who would never buy a book about spirituality, or a 'self-help' type book.

Those who have some background in any kind of spiritual practice or have even read any books on these subjects will find nothing of interest here but for a stressed-out commuter who has never given much attention to their spiritual life there may well be much of value. It is for it's possible appeal to the masses that I have given it 4 stars (although I did not enjoy the book myself) because I know that not everybody can go straight in with the Yoga Sutras or Zen writings and books like this have their place.
