Well constructed and tightly plotted Alien invasion story. If you have read the blurb you know some of what the story is about.

Nuttall is an excellent up-and-coming author in my opinion. Unlike all the invasion stories to have emerged since "Independence Day" these aliens do not use highly advanced technology to defeat the armies of Earth, instead they basically drop rocks on us. It works. Their technology is only slightly advanced on ours but they hold the high ground.

"Invasion" covers the first contact, invasion and Earth's fight back. There is a subtle twist towards the end which I will not reveal but made the book even more satisfying than at first. This is a highly recommended alternative view of aliens invading the Earth, this time in the name of religion.

If you have persevered through the first six books then I applaud your stamina. At times Anderson seemed to jump about a bit in furthering the plot sometimes to the extent of frustration. However, unlike some interminable series I have given up on (Pern, Gor, Wheel of Time) Anderson has presented and excellent and satisfying conclusion to the series. There is scope for developing some of the ideas further in spin-offs which should be worth reading. Highly recommended conclusion to the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Sentinel, 8 April 2014

Although I have given this book 4 stars I am not likely to read the sequels. The writing is good, there is plenty of compulsion to turn the pages, strong and interesting characters and plausible science, but I was haunted by the spectre of the original Arthur C. Clarke story which gave birth to Kubrick's "2001".

I am not accusing the author of plagiarism in any way at all but it was a difficult topic to cover without some echoes of Clarke's short story. If you have not read the Clarke story, seen the film, or read the novelisation of the film, then you will find it a fresh and interesting look at First Contact and faster than light travel.

Recommended with some reservations.

3.0 out of 5 stars Regular but not special, 27 Mar 2014

I bought this after reading a range of reviews. It was not exactly disappointing but not a page-turner. It was also nothing like I expected in the action department. In fact, through much of the novel, there is very little which could be described as action. What you get is a well written but pedestrian stroll accompanying a new writer who is commissioned to see how the new system for reintegrating disciplined spacers back into the service is working.

At best I would describe this as an interesting look at the workings of a space ship but spends far too much time on the minutiae of running the ship than on taking the reader to parts unknown. I have to admit that I am unlikely to read further novels in the series but you may disagree with me.

Cheap, does exactly what it should without the stupid programming codes that a lot of replacement multi-purpose remotes need. Highly recommended and will give me more use out of the DVD player since the old remote stopped working.

Excellent rites of passage novel set in space. Epic battles, gripping moments, no real romance (Yay!!) but some really good characters. You will want to keep turning the pages on this novel and I hope the author writes at least one sequel.

According to some sources there is a lot of rubbish being published as ebooks because normal publishers won't touch them. Don't you believe it. There are some excellent authors out there, just read my reviews, and a lot of excellent books at a fraction of the paperback prices. This is one of the best I have read recently, one among many worth reading. Highly recommended.

Bought only to replace a worn out IDE DVDROM drive which came with my computer when XP was new kid on the block. Not much to say except it is cheap, no leads or screws, and does the job excellently. Regarding lack of lead or screws, if you don;t have a few bits hanging around I question whether you should be changing a drive for yourself anyway. Not that it's hard to do.

Highly recommended piece of kit at an exceptional price point. If I needed another, this is what I would get.

There are more than a few tenuous links between this novel and the film Battleship which also features a majestic but obsolete vessel repelling invaders when more modern technology fails. Having said that it is as original as any novel can be and Nuttall has developed both the characters and scenario to present a gripping read which had me turning the pages.

The plot is about an old but very heavily over-engineered space carrier turning out to be Humanity's only chance against apparently technologically superior but very unfriendly invaders. Nuttall avoids a lot of cliches which can spoil modern sf with the exception of a few "Americanisms" which can be forgiven in such a good book. I had one major disappointment. There is currently no sequel. Highly recommended action novel set in the near future.

For the price of one official cartridge this company offers all four: yellow, cyan, magenta and black. Unlike another brand I bought through Ebay these do seem to be fully compatible. Highly recommended. I can never really understand why brand names are so expensive for what appears to be the same quality of product.

This is a dramatised version of the short life of Ian Curtis and the band and essential viewing for any fan.

Was he a tragic person? I don't know, but he lived through tragedy. I know Macclesfeld quite well and, like many northern industrial towns, leaving is often the only way to succeed. Although the rest of the band suffered from what many consider to have been a very selfish act, it often seems forgotten that he left a young wife and child at a time when benefits were nowhere near as generous as they are now. I think he was a romantic who was hit hard when real life collided with his ideals.

There are some excellent performances by the actors playing the band and this is highly recommended for fans.
