Anyone wishing to learn about Japanese history and culture, should read this book. What better place to start than to examine and learn about Japan's (and perhaps the world's) darkest hour. John Hersey's original manuscript/account of the bleak aftermath of the Hiroshima bombing is shocking to the extreme, but also deeply moving, compelling and a fantastic read.
I found it hard to put this book down, but equally found I had to continually remind myself that this was an account of a real-life situation. The horrors of Hiroshima are twinned with the humanity, forgiveness and compassion of the Japanese people.
A brilliant read, if not a bit on the short side.
