Difficult to find good books about ballroom dancing but this is a good one. What is clever about it is that it balances the dance of a failing marriage against the rediscovery of a love and the skill for ballroom. It is remarkably honest and open and also gives you some insight into the feelings and emotions that pass through a dancers mind when they are in action. It is a fine read and an interesting journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark and smoky drama with a nice line in comedy as a bonus, 15 Mar. 2016

Persevere with this. It took time to find its feet and now at episode eight it is getting darker and Tom Ellis is beginning to hit his straps in the part as the writing improves. Destroying his wings was a cool idea - but seriously they aren't flame retardant? - I like his confusion as the drawbacks to being human assault him and not being able to get off with the detective is helped by her fine if slightly pouty acting. The pace is good and measured which leaves lots of scope if they take it to series two. Nothing is happening too quickly which is the secret of good US drama. I look forward to staying with it and hope not to be disappointed.

I had only partly seen this when it was broadcast. Natalie Dormer is exceptional in it, though I found on a second full viewing that the flashback structure was a bit confusing. It helps break up the courtroom scenes that are central to the plot but it also breaks the emotional journey that Lady W takes. It is a slightly mucky story but opens a window on a time when excess and the divine right of the male were very much the rule of the day.

I had forgotten what a splendid writer Levin was. This is a great piece of journalism and gives a great view of the whole period. It was wonderful to read as all sorts of things I had long forgotten were suddenly there again on the page. If you are interested in the period then this is a must read, and you will enjoy it.

A short but detailed account of the period and the way people lived back then. Amanda Vickery's passion for the period is infectious and she has genuine pleasure at showing the viewer the locations and the objects that throw light on the period. I always find dramatisation mixed with documentary a little bit arch but in this series it works well.

I bought this as I was researching the period and couldn't believe that this book actually existed. Thanks to Harvard for publishing it. The text is pretty good and clear throughout, and the detail is amazing. Written just after the event it is clearly very accurate.

I bought this for research I am doing. It is still surprisingly good. There are some rather dated montages but the cast are all excellent, the direction is slick and well, it is enjoyable, and of course a bargain at the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another charismatic kid, 21 Jun. 2004
This review is from: The Supernaturalist (Hardcover)
To create one memorable fictional kid is a talent, to create a second is mastery. The world of Cosmo Hill may be far removed from that of Artemis Fowl but the air tastes the same, the action is break kneck and the underlying themes of crazy adolescence, noisy shoot outs and nothing being quite what it seems should keep Colfer fans panting for more. The supporting characters throb with life and Colfer handles everything from deception and the importance of family to first love and the transcendental nature of death with consumate skill. I've loved everything he has written and press his books on my children and friends as a must read. I treasure his imagination as unique and irreplaceable.
