5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly brilliant !, 6 Sep 2010
This review is from: Beautiful Girls [DVD] [1996] (DVD)
I can't believe this superb film is available for a measly £3 - talk about a bargain !
This is easily one of my all time faves , classic stuff and well worth taking a chance on at that price , truly.
Had the DVD for years but i wish they'd put out a new 2 disc version with lots of extras to enjoy (or even a 3 disc box set with the soundtrack on CD !) , i'll be first in line for a copy . Tremendously excellent !

4.0 out of 5 stars Lost Treasure !, 6 Sep 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a lost piece of mellow acoustic madness/genius , a bit Van Morrison-ish with a very laid back California type vibe to it , it seemed to slip away unnoticed when it first came out but if you like "cult" artists and something a bit diffrent i'd say this is well worth a go . Also includes a couple that have a distinct Country feel (indeed there's a tremendous Hank Williams cover "I Can't Escape From You") but the rest is firmly in the singer/songwriter mode ,
Once again the lovely folks at REV - OLA come up trumps , when are they going to get around to CHIP TAYLORs "Last Chance" though , thats what i wanna know............

5.0 out of 5 stars At Last....., 4 Sep 2010
This review is from: More Miles Than Money (Audio CD)
I read the wonderful book which complements this cd a good while ago and i've been waiting on this release for ages .
Such a great overview of most aspects of American roots music , it features a lot of artists i hadn't heard so i'm slowly getting into it and enjoying the full experience. a couple of classics must be mentioned however , Townes van Zandt with one of his superb songs Flying Shoes , he was one of the worlds best songwriters and never lets you down . Also , Billy Joe Shaver ; same thing , a great talent who is loved by his peers (Kristofferson , Willie Nelson) but pretty unknown by the general public. Here he is with his old pal Johnny Cash on a slighty tongue in cheek tribute to his main inspiration - the man above !
And there's no way i cannot mention what is (for me) the greatest single that was EVER released (so far !) , namely THAT"S HOW STRONG MY LOVE IS by O.V. WRIGHT . Well , what a singer that man was , one of the very greatest , on a par with James Carr and Sam Cooke and that's some fine company to keep . Otis Redding did a great version of this but O.V. .........he leaves Otis in his slipstream , listen to him soar at the key change "I'll be the weeping willow....."
Masterclass in emotive , gut -wrenching , pure southern soul , it does not get any better . I want to meet the author and compiler of this set and by him a drink or three , just for helping to keep this song alive .
So , it's worth it just for that track then !

5.0 out of 5 stars Late night or early morning ?, 16 Aug 2010
This review is from: Nightclub (Audio CD)
This album is , quite simply , magnificent.
It's all moody , stripped - down 3 a.m. type stuff , after-hours melancholy serenades but with a warm heart and a beautifully played and sung lightness.
Patricia Barber is a fantastic singer and the band follow her superbly , bending the music around glorious torch songs of love , loss and heartbreak . You simply have to settle back with the lights out and just let it all wash over you , let yourself be taken away out of your troubles for a while and into the realm of smoky beauty which they conjure up .
She's made a good few records now but this may be her masterpiece and i for one wish there was a Nightclub 2 on the horizon , i can dream can't i ?
Definitely one to add to the collection, it's a dark , delicious delight which i never tire of .....and , just as a bonus , the lady looks very beautiful on the cover !

5.0 out of 5 stars Seriously ?, 28 July 2010
I couldn't let this one pass , i mean there's a reviewer on here saying that on this album "the songwriting doesn't stand out " . Come on , seriously ? This is a Grammy winning album by one of the finest singer/songwriters to ever pick up a pen or a guitar , it's absolutely fantastic !
As for John's singing , well , i admit that it's a voice that could be politely described as an acquired taste but hell , when did that stop guys like Dylan or Tom Waits or Rod Stewart ? Never that's when .
Anyway , John Prine's debut album may remain his best effort but this one is a fine contender for 2nd place , rich , varied , subtle and beautiful in equal measure , it stands the test of both time and repeated plays . Musically diverse and probably his best effort at singing in different voices , this is one that every Prine fan should own , a real winner in every sense.

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly amazing ......., 25 July 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've been a fan of Tim Gautreaux for a good few years now and i'd read all of his novels before getting hold of this volume of short stories . Of his novels my favourite is probably The Clearing but even that superb effort is put firmly into the shade by this utterly amazing collection . I didn't even know that he wrote short stories but it turns out that he's been at it for a good while , with great (and very much deserved ) success .
This collection is actually a coming together of two volumes (Same Place,Same Things and Welding With Children) which came out originally in America in the 90's. Here you get all the stories from those two editions (23 in all) for the price of one and i can assure you it's great value .
Tim Gautreaux is simply a master at evoking a sense of place and character , taking you into the lives of each and holding you enthralled , delighted to be offered a glimpse into these characters lives and very sad to come to the end .
It's very hard to pick out faves , i really enjoyed every one so i'll leave it to others to pick and choose .
If you enjoy writers like Russell Banks and David Gates then you'll love this but even if you've no idea who they are you will still get a lot from this , i'm pretty sure of that . Wonderful stuff , roll on the next one .........

4.0 out of 5 stars A Genius, 3 July 2010
This review is from: Original Album Series (Audio CD)
Roddy Frame is , in my humble opinion , a true musical genius who can write beautiful music and lyrics whenever he feels like it . Aztec Camera (his band) were one of the very best and every album has many (if different ) charms .
All the cd's in this box set are superb but i take a star away because they are here in their basic form , still amazing but long overdue some remastering and a reissue programme with new sleevenotes and bonus tracks etc.
If you're a newcomer or just want to replace old classics fair enough but if you want newer takes on these albums you're out of luck .
PS A previous reviewer wonders what Roddy Frame is doing now , well the answer is that he's still making superb music but under his own name ! Be sure to check out his 3 solo albums but especially the second one "SURF" which is a true masterpiece and possibly the best he's ever made.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just pure , beautiful genius ......., 18 Jun 2010
If you care to look you will notice that EVERY review of this album , as i write this (June 2010) , awards it the maximum allowed , 5 stars all the way !!
That should tell you something . This was Aretha's first recording for Atlantic Records following a fairly long stint at Columbia . She recorded some decent stuff whilst with Columbia of course ( with a voice like this it would be hard not to) but really , this was her chance to break free from the shackles , let loose and show the world what she could really do . Believe me , the results did not disappoint .
Recording started at the legendary FAME studios in Muscle Shoals , Alabama (one of the most famous recording studios in musical history , run by Chips Moman) , producing two absolutely classic cuts I NEVER LOVED A MAN (THE WAY I LOVE YOU) and DO RIGHT WOMAN - DO RIGHT MAN .
Thereafter they moved up North to Atlantics studios in New York to complete the album . The lady was on the ball and in the mood when she recorded this let me tell you , every track is utterly brilliant and it's very hard to pick out favourites , they change every time i play the damn thing ! Just look at the track listing ; RESPECT , one of the all -time classics (miles better than Otis' pedestrian romp) , SAVE ME , a groovetastic wonder , A CHANGE IS GONNA COME , with it's heartfelt soaring intro , DR. FEELGOOD , so good they named a band after it !!!
Believe me , the rest of the album is just as good .
Where do you go after this though , well i'm afraid the answer is ....downhill. Not to write off the work which came after (there's a few albums from the 5 year period which followed this release which are almost as good ...almost , but not quite ) hell , you'll be hard pushed to find an album this good by anybody , in any genre , that's how high the standard is here .
Simply an utter classic , easily in the Top Three Soul albums of all time , and unequalled by very , very few in the years since . People will be listening to this for as long as recorded music survives......

Rabbit is Rich (Penguin Modern Classics)
by John Updike
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.........., 15 Jun 2010
For me this is the best of the "Rabbit" novels , it's an absolute masterpiece , so perfectly written and with rich , believable characters . Of course , all 4 in the series are superb so it's a thin line....
This just shades it above "Rabbit Redux" and takes it's place as one of the best novels ever written and a firm contender in the fabled Great American Novel stakes .

Over -earnest garbage , the sort of stuff that gives music a bad name i'm afraid . The band have so much faith in the new album that they put a version of their biggest hit on at the end to try and sell it ! Which says it all really . The poor man's Bon Jovi , avoid.........
